There's a thread going on /a/ right now with everyone making anime covers as if they were Penguin Classics books and it's fantastic. These are some of my favorites so far.
This was already discussed a lot in the Gundam community but it'll never cease to amuse me to see how much Gunpla is a HUGE part of the franchise due how cool-looking the robots are, and then you pick one of Tomino's novels and he describes Mobile Suits like this 💀
Hibari-kun being popular enough they would consider letting Dr. Slump end but constant hiatuses making editors changing their mind about it, so making Toriyama work on it for longer probably led to him think about a new series we all know...
an incredibly wild pipeline of events
Former Weekly Shonen Jump editor Kazuhiko Torishima revealed in a recent interview that "Stop!! Hibari-kun!" by Hisashi Eguchi was so popular, editorial considered letting Akira Toriyama quit writing Dr. Slump early.
He explained that due to Slump's gradual loss in popularity,
On the 752nd day since the original theatrical release and the 513th day since the Japan theatrical release, we are witnessing the love from 6000kms away, our hometown Hyderabad, India.
What else could there be?
Everything coming is a blessing!!
Love you audience.❤️
#RRRMovie
Baki had a literal sex scene between him and his girlfriend that lasted for a whole special volume and it was one of the nastiest love scenes I've ever seen
(and I use "nasty" as a HUGE compliment here)
I know this is bait but I just want to remind everyone that Onizuka had a trans girlfriend in Shounan Junai Gumi, before GTO, and the whole plot about her was surprisingly well-done and respectful, for 90s shounen manga standards
There it is, they finally did it. Ginga Densetsu Weed is finally fully scanlated in english
this absolute behemoth of a huge series, in all its 60 volumes, finally completed. It's a big achievement whenever a really long series like this is over
Tomino has been in Brazil in 2004 for a lecture in an university, in which he talks about the history of mecha anime and a bit of his work. The VHS tape was just recovered and uploaded on Youtube.
Would anyone here be interested in a translation or a summary of it?
Mother's Basement fucked up so hard in his statement about Yu Yu Hakusho "bringing in shoujo elements to battle shounen manga" that YUZO KOSHIRO HIMSELF came to confirm Kurumada is, indeed, big and Ring ni Kakero was the stuff back when it came
@MercuryFalcon
@Iamsuchanerk
As a 30-year reader of Shonen Jump, I believe ‘Ring ni Kakero’ really set the standard for battle tournament-style manga that followed. The trend of shouting special move names during battles? I’d say that became popular with this manga.
Ishinomori in 1964: "Cyborg 009 is about nine individuals who were transformed into cyborgs against their will to become weapons for an evil organization who profits with war"
1977: JAKQ, the second super sentai show, pitched by him, brings up similar themes.
Sentai in 2023:
Imagining the average western anime fan seething when realizing fucking Anpanman has better TV ratings and merch popularity than 95% of the shit they watch
This guy totally comes in declaring "IT SMELLS LIKE BITCH IN HERE" in a room full of isekai heroes and, dunno, Eren Jaeger
As a longtime Lupin fan I feel sad that the man behind the very first one passed. Most of us are more familliar with the animated versions, but Monkey Punch's manga had quite his unique touch on it. None of this would've happened if he didn't inked those characters down in comics
Mizuno Hideko's "FIRE!" is about to be officially published in the west for the first time, and It'll be... in Brazil (yeah, not even France or Italy got this one before)
These are the covers of the brazilian edition.
Man, Monkey Punch, Lupin III's original creator passed away at 81.
This dude will be missed but he left a huge legacy to japanese media as a whole.
Rest in Peace.
I love One Piece like I love very few things in this Earth but how I'm afraid I have to remind you all that Umezu Kazuo exists and he's still alive
When it comes to "unique aura" this guy is pretty much unmatched. Even HIS FUCKING HOUSE has his "aura" all over it
Apparently, this is one of Ichiro Mizuki's very final performances, singing the Mazinger Z original theme for the 50th anniversary of the franchise
The man could barely sing anymore but he was still there for it. So heartbreaking to watch that this legit brought me to tears.
To my English-speaking followers, in anticipation of Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway I translated a part of interview with Tomino where he shares his thoughts on Hathaway’s adaptation and also says few words about G-Reco.
Hope you'll like it and sorry for my bad English.
Happy 40th anniversary, Votoms!
It's one of the most memorable mecha anime from the 80s for very good reason. Almost feels like a sci-fi take on the Epic of Gilgamesh, while featuring a proto-Solid Snake that would be Chirico Cuvie.
Aged like fine wine
On the 1st of April 1983, the first episode of Armored Trooper Votoms aired. Directed by Ryosuke Takahashi (Dougram, Layzner, Galient), the series spawned multiple OVAs & video games. Votoms eventually debuted in SRW Z2: Hakai-hen (PSP) in 2011.
Happy 40th Anniversary Votoms 🎉
If I think about it, Cobra is one of the first characters that comes to mind when I think about "otoko no roman", aka "THE MAN'S DREAM"
Nothing more "romantic" than flying out there through space with your hot android partner fighting scumbags and meeting cool space babes at it
I love Yu Yu Hakusho but c'mon, Geoff
Kurumada was already doing that with Ring ni Kakero more than a whole decade before it by having the rival of the protagonist steal his sister's (and also trainer) heart in one of the most melodramatic cheesy kiss scenes Shonen Jump ever had
YYH paved the way for deeper storytelling in Shounen battle series, in part by introducing Shoujo Elements to the formula. It set a new standard for character development, created many Novel character archetypes, and set a bar that STILL hasn’t been cleared for Tournament Arcs
I will forever and unironically defend that Dragon Ball is legit one of the best comics ever made and these ridiculously well-panelled fights are a huge part of the reasoning behind that.
Unmatched beast and very few can dream coming close to being as good as he was at this.
Man. Insane to think that the some of the greatest and most visceral compositions ever put on paper were done in a weekly comic magazine for kids almost 40 years ago. So much to say about Toriyama but rereading DB as an adult really set in how much of a true genius he was.
imagine reading Shonen Magazine in 1972
you barely experienced Ashita no Joe's (then fresh, the ending wasn't already widely known yet as it is today) final chapter and there's the newest Devilman chapter right next to it, as if you haven't had enough.
Watching the original 1966 Ultraman show surely unlocks a whole new level of referential knowledge about japanese pop culture:
identifying blatant shout-outs to Ultraman in a lot of japanese works, specially older anime/manga.
"being sealed inside a coffin" is one hell of a description to how it must feel to be inside a MS cockpit.
It feels claustrophobic and the space inside it is not that generous, just as a coffin.
Oddly, the shape of the RX-78's shield reminds me of a coffin. I can't unsee it now
For manga, I particularly suggest Ryuu no Michi.
It's one of the best sci-fi stories ever told and the manga equivalent of "2001", to some extent. It's so criminally underrated it hurts.
And hands down one of Ishinomori's best manga works.
Still about Terasawa, it's cool that he was one of the very first mangaka trying to use digital art in manga, with "Black Knight Bat" running in Shonen Jump in 1985
this ended up being one of the world's very first digitally-drawn comics ever
Dear lord, according to this article Terasawa had been struggling with a brain tumor since 1998.
The guy had 25-year battle against cancer. That's not even a battle anymore, it's a war.
And despite of that, he was still active at work, that's insane!
Thinking again about the one-shot Ishinomori did about Yukio Mishima's death and presenting some sort of "visual essay" on how he was a narcissist at his core.
and also subtlety understanding that Mishima just wanted to (not-so-secretly) obliterate a twink
This was posted these days at /m/ and I found it interesting enough to share with you guys.
Looks like we found out about a giant piloted robot manga even older than Tetsujin-28 gou, and that would be "Genshiryoku Jinzoningen" (Atomic Power Android), from 1948 by Uno Kazumichi.
tbf the girl basically disappears for the rest of the series
Itagaki SOMEHOW made the sex scene go just like the way he draws fights and that shit was intense. I love this madman
Not from Japan, but there was a Brazillian comic called "Audaz, the demolisher", by Álvaro "Aruom" Moura and Manoel Messias, published in 1939. Even older than the Atomic Android.
Did Brazil invented Giant Robots in science-fiction? We don't know
My biggest memory of Sanpei Shirato is probably the way Shigeru Mizuki described him in "Showa: A History of Japan".
He looked like a cool guy to hang out with.
This is, hands down, the biggest manga licensing news in the west this year
One of the most historically important manga ever is finally making its way into being readable in a language a lot of us worldwide can read
Cult historical social drama manga "Kamuiden" by Sanpei Shirato will be released in English in Fall 2024 by
@DandQ
in 10 volumes.
Epic Historical Manga Series from the 1960s originally published in famous gekiga alternative manga magazine Garo set in Edo Period about three men
Brazilian Miku booming and a few days later Twitter possibly being taken down in Brazil because the Divorced Space Karen don't wanna comply to laws is seriously a turn of events no one could expected
When you see a lot of japanese artists that were around there in the late 70s praising RinKake and naming it as an incluence for them we know for sure that this is one of the most historically important Jump manga overlooked in the anglosphere (arguably even the west in generall)
I don't really believe the idea of "must-watch/read/etc" for anything, including anime, but if there's something coming close to that in anime, it totally would be the original Space Battleship Yamato
historical importance aside, it's a really damn great and memorable journey
Hey kids, are you all ready to watch Hideaki Anno's outlandish masterpiece, which became one of the pinnacles of japanese animation of all time and it's still remembered after all those years?

Yeah, that's right, time to watch Gunbuster, folks!
by the way, the novel I'm reading is "Secret Rendezvous", not the novelization of the original series. I'm halfway through it and I plan to talk more about it after I'm done.
You can read it via
@TheIdeon
's translations, which are almost completed
Love Hina mangaka turned politician Ken Akamatsu has stated he's looking into protecting manga creators rights in relation to AI.
The situation has become a hot topic recently in relation to "Ekijin no Karute" creator Kishin Higuchi discovering his style was being copied and
Also, Crystal Boy (sometimes elegantly spelled as "Crystal Bowie") is one of the coolest villain designs ever
he looks straight up from a sci-fi James Bond movie.
A cyborg assassin with a golden skeleton under his translucent body with a huge claw that shoots lasers!
DOPE
During Japan Expo, Go Nagai was just nominated as a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in France, stabilished by the french Culture Minister.
That's a hell of an award and probably one of the biggest the man ever received in his whole career
*sigh* Were you expecting someone else?
That's right, Bubsy is back in a Carbon Engine collection of classic capers! Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection releases digitally and physically in 2025.
I just remembered that Kazuhiko Shimamoto's G Gundam manga adaptation exists and that the absolute madman literally recreated the opening of the show in the first chapter
if you're into anime and never watched any of his works do yourself a favor and do it as soon as possible.
My personal favorites would be Gamba no Bouken, Oniisama e, Ashita no Joe, The Rose of Versailles, the Space Cobra and Golgo 13 movies
His Lupin III stuff is great too.
YouTuber Shinobu Yoshida was found guilty posting a let's play of Steins;Gate: My Darling's Embrace, sentenced to 2 years prison (suspended for 5 years) and a 1 mil yen fine.
It's the first time someone has been found guilty of copyright infringement by posting gameplay videos.
it'll never cease to amaze me that, Yapool, one of the most iconic villains of the Ultraman franchise is PROBABLY named after an 1950s erotic sci-fi BDSM horror novel that serves as an allegory to how powerless Japan became after WWII during the american occupation
Ace... Ace! I've found you, Ace!

Whenever I see people saying they can't take older manga's stories (specially Tezuka and Ishinomori, among a few others) seriously because the art is simpler and more "cartoony" I can't help but think they totally just lack imagination
I always find pretty funny how Woody Woodpecker is considered "obscure" in the US, where he came from and here in Brazil we see him EVERY-FUCKING-WHERE and there isn't a single person who doesn't know about him
He's even more beloved than Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny around here
The only reason some of these old cartoon characters don't have "pop culture importance" is because networks haven't aired their cartoons in ages. If Cartoon Network had played Woody Woodpecker, Betty Boop, or Rocky & Bullwinkle when I was a kid, I would've loved them.
Brand-new license announcement! Nagata Kabi’s MY ALCOHOLIC ESCAPE FROM REALITY, an autobiographical manga from the award-winning creator of MY LESBIAN EXPERIENCE WITH LONELINESS and MY SOLO EXCHANGE DIARY!
This is the internet recently discovering that Kakugo no Susume/Apocalypse Zero is actually REALLY FUCKING GOOD despite years of bad rap because of some people watching the OVA and trying some BennettTheSage approach with it
re: experiencing media for yourself
"I heard it was bad" is for cowards, go see for yourself--you'll be surprised what you like that other people don't, and vice-versa
Ichiro Mizuki passed away...
He visibly wasn't very well in his last few public appearances, but still attended to his concerts to meet fans anyway, yet keeping that aura and energy he always had, like the fucking legend he was.
Rest in peace, king. You WILL be missed.
Ichiro Mizuki passing saddens anime & toku fans everywhere. He wasn't a singer of anime & hero music, he was THE singer of them. His music was just as famous as the shows he sung for & his style & flair inspired all that came after.
He will always be the Emperor of Anime Songs.
It's so fucked up that it's easier to have Watsuki to be ostracized if he gets caught with weed or if he cheated on his wife than with him buying an actual shitload of child p*rn
Akutami Gege, mangaka of Jujutsu Kaisen, will be part of the jury in the 105th Tezuka Manga Award.
The jury is also composed of Akira Toriyama, Nobuhiro Watsuki, Eiichiro Oda, Kazue Kato, Kohei Horikoshi and Tezuka Productions.
Thinking about the fact that Ishinomori was ballsy enough to do a manga retelling of the whole history of Japan from its stone age up until the (then) modern days, which lasted 55 volumes
and that he apparently managed to complete this behemoth in like 5 years.
a true madman
Finished reading Kaimeiji Yuu's "Final Fantasy"
and it's an adaptation of the first FF game, but with some creative freedom. It's aesthetically pleasing and has plenty of interesting ideas and concepts based off the game, but... that's it. The rest feels kinda underbaked
And there we go: Yoshiyuki Tomino talking about Kimetsu no Yaiba/Demon Slayer and, surprisingly, praising it and saying he understands where all it's popularity comes from and that it's a well crafted work
But since it's Tomino, he also dunks on Ufotable for their tax evasion
The whole thing starts with the event runners introducing Tomino to the audience, and they show a montage with a bunch of openings of his works, precisely from Umi no Triton to Ideon.
He then proceeds into saying the audience won't be having a show there and that he is+
@invaderalex
as much as I love Tamako Love Story, Tomino is absolutely right on this one
it feels refreshing to see romantic subplots in anime where you can definetely feel the involved parties want to BONE HARD offscreen. It feels genuine. (and G-Reco goes hard on this)
there's an extra layer of funny in this video for me just on the fact alone that the guy ALSO happens to sound like Freeza
this dude'd probably be fun to hang out with
Otokozaka is the manga Kurumada wanted to do the most, as a tribute to "Otoko Ippiki Gaki Daishou", which impacted him as a kid and made him want to draw manga
it started in 1984 but got axed in a few months, but it resumed in 2014 and it's now finally ending
what a comeback
"Otokozaka" by "Saint Seiya" creator Kurumada Masami will end in 5 chapters on Shounen Jump Plus Web Service!
The Series will resume on Oct 14, 2023 for the last 5 chapters. Final vol 11 will be out on Nov 2, 2023.
Just watched "Haguregumo" (1982)
A movie about being chill and just going with the flow as you live, even in turbulent times.
Pretty darn excellent, I loved it!
G Gundam turns 30 this day and I think it's a good day to remember how the manga adaptation made by Shimamoto Kazuhiko himself is probably one of the best anime to manga adaptations out there
I just remembered that Kazuhiko Shimamoto's G Gundam manga adaptation exists and that the absolute madman literally recreated the opening of the show in the first chapter
