@TheStreetTree Sycamore (Celtic Maple) has plenty of pests and diseases that affect it (like many other trees) but agree it’s a great species and will probably replace ash in many of our woodlands and does support good lichen and moss communities on the bark. It’s a shame grey squirrels like it

@edgarwright @Channel4 Spaced was a formative part of my life growing up. Soo many amazing cult references.

@paulpowlesland Funnily enough I was going to do a post about mutilated and poorly managed churchyard yews having seen at least 50 or so this year so poorly pruned and managed. I am of the firm opinion that Diocese managed trees in Churchyards are amongst the worst I’ve seen!

@GuillaumeFeldm1 @JustPlaneNews @OurSacredGrove @paulpowlesland @TheStreetTree @ChrisGPackham @STRAWPlymouth This is not called pollarding, this is called ‘Topping’ or even could be considered a ‘Shred’. Pollarding is a recognised management technique done in a trees early life stage to form a ‘head’ for fodder or other wood product and would have had a cultural basis.

@JustPlaneNews @haringeycouncil @TheStreetTree @paulpowlesland @mikehakata Ooooh dear, instead of saying ‘No’ ask why? I wonder in the interests of balance whether there could be a thread on why ‘topping’ actually can be a beneficial arboricultural practice and when all other management options are exhausted and only way of retaining a tree or habitat.

@JustPlaneNews @haringeycouncil These trees are crown reduced aka ‘pollarded’ (but not true pollard) likely because of perceived nuisance complaints (loss of light/view/ aphid +honeydew etc) by the persons living in the flats opposite. Admittedly it is a proven management technique. Probs needs 3yrly cycle.

@PershoreColin Looking good Colin! Apparently S. leucophylla relishes heat and sunshine and given this will produce some great ‘late season’ pitchers

@RGE_Art Love this tree and was amazed when I saw it some 5yrs ago. Yes it is a Thuja plicata and is normal for it to layer like this when very old.
