🚀 Hold onto your hats! Looking ahead to 2024, AI development is accelerating and proliferating 💨

Just realized why VCs spend SOOO much time on Twitter.
Not just for self promotion (there’s a lot of that, for sure) but for many it’s actually a lonely job (🤫 no one wants to admit it) and people need some friends and a water cooler.
True or false?
What do you call someone who's really great at stitching together modular tools like Airtable + Notion + Zap + Slack + .... to build quasi-products?
Not a PM. Not a Marketer. Not Ops per se.
What are we calling it?
I want Anthony Bourdain’s

Are Venture Studios a thing? What are best examples?
Big theme lately from friends w/ deep expertise in a specific field - they have unique insights, multiple startup ideas, but don’t want to go purely founder (pick just 1) or VC —
What’s best model to unlock their potential?
Something very important happened in VC this year — not sure it’s gotten enough attention
We normalized $1B+ women led and founded venture funds!!!
Thanks to
@kirstenagreen
and
@katie_haun
, the bar has been raised higher and ripple effect is palpable…
The competitive game in VC has scared investors out of giving founders the critical feedback they need to hear, to be liked — I’ve never seen anything like it
But Founders oughta know, the people who give it to you straight are the most valuable
Seek out the honest brokers 👀
One thing that’s certain here…
the OpenAI team will be bonded for LIFE after this experience
moving through major crisis together breeds unity + social glue like no other
this will be an unbelievably tight knit talent mafia in the years to come
More than PayPal, Uber, FB,
When we criticize women CEOs for being hard charging and not making EE's feel adequately cared for, what we're saying is we need women leaders to fulfill our stereotype of being caretakers and work moms
It's the ultimate double bind, can be effective or admired but not both 🤨
1/ NEWS! 🧵 So last week was a REALLY good week in my world. We turned a new page as a country 🇺🇸, got our first female Vice President 💃🏾and with that awesome backdrop, I started off my new chapter too! I'm loving the parallel. 😁
I feel for founders trying to schedule anything with VCs right now
Pinged peers today about a thing and got ALL the OOO messages 😆🏝
It’s like a wall of silence.
Try, try again…in Sept
The most remarkable thing about the
@Uber
journey isn’t the $Bs but the collective human effort behind it all - the 10Ks employees that built it, the 3M drivers around the world, the billions of human ride interactions. It’s a people powered biz like no other.
I am this close to never sending a personal email again...
short video clips are just so much faster, more human and fun than long form email - anyone doing this at work??
I’ve been sending
@loom
videos in text instead of emails, it’s the best
There's two truths in company building:
1. Hire people who will grow WITH your company
2. Hire people who your company will GROW into
Turns out you need BOTH, usually in equal measure.
It might just be me, but...
I’m seeing SO many fantastic female founders right now at the early stage, it’s incredibly inspiring
The industry % stats are bleak today, it’s true, but times are changing. If you’re on the fence, get in the game.
“Here comes the sun!”☀️
The startup ecosystem I first fell in love with during the Mobile era feels like it’s BACK in the Bay:
- Founders bragging about what they BUILT, rather than what they raised
- Startup teams working 24x7 to SHIP
- Packed weekend hackathons and demo days
- Supportive,

Coming back from a few days in NYC
There is something palpably different about NYC tech ecosystem — or maybe just the people I’m seeing? 🤔
Conversations feel less transactional than SF, more interest in intellectual debate and curiosity on AI, trends, investment themes,
If you stay at a hypergrowth company long enough you literally see history repeat itself. The same product ideas, people issues and decisions boomerang back. It’s wild, totally having a Deja Vu today.
My mind is wired to look forward but this week had to give history its due
It was the 30 yr anniversary of coming to America and 20 yrs since I became a U.S. citizen
Growing up here is luck.
Making it here is hard work.
I’ll never by cynical about this amazing country! 🇺🇸🙏
SF is definitely, definitely back
Even LPs saying “Hey, I’m staying in SF and it’s not that bad, glad to be here”
SF the City has work to do for sure but SF the Community is alive and well!
I’ve seen more consumer social innovation and big ideas in last 6 mo than in last 6 years
Times are changing and it’s exciting!
Between Twitter drama, FB fading, Snap struggling and Gen Z coming of age — there is now room for startups to make big moves & founders know it
👀
I need an
@Airbnb
for Team Offsites - who's doing this?
- Marketplace of fun team building events
- Selection of coaches + facilitators on various topics
- Accommodations, travel logistics, baked in
- Hyper local (near me)
- Not lame
Srsly, someone should build this ASAP!
Feels like the calm before the storm
August will be still be slow for VC but I expect fundraising frenzy to come roaring back in September
Just too much pent up demand and companies that have been waiting out the summer to raise that next round. Get your ducks in a row now.
Watched Late Night again on the plane ✈️ yesterday, and wow the writing is just so smart.
On surface it’s a basic comedy but the nuance of how it simultaneously explains and makes light of diversity and personal renewal is absolutely brilliant. Kudos
@mindykaling
! 👌
There is an important signal in the popularity of the
@indievc
scout program — radical inclusion and transparency is what’s going to win the next decade of venture (just like
@a16z
‘s full stack, founder friendly model shaped the last).
Change the rules, change the game 👇
Can’t let the weekend close w/o expressing heartfelt gratitude for everyone’s excitement and pride in being part
@indievc
’s Scout program.
Swear I had nothing to do with all the tweets!
Oh, and just wait’ll you see the other 80% of the pilot group you haven’t heard from yet...
The world is a-changin, slowly but surely.
In a coffee shop, CEO next to me talking recruiting strategy with his biz partner: "What are we doing about diversity and inclusion? What's our strategy for that? We need to figure it out"
This is sad 🙄. Can we all agree that 40 under 40 or whatever age listicles are just clickbait? Honestly, if that’s what you’re focused on as a founder you’ve already lost.
Scoop from me and
@erbrod
: UBiome's founder repeatedly presented herself as years younger than she actually was, in an apparent effort to be included in articles showcasing young founders
Today marks my 10 YEAR anniversary of juggling career + parenting 🎉
(as in my son turned 10)
It feels like halfway mark of an ultra marathon, but I’m claiming a small victory. Moms should do that!!!
It’s harder than anyone admits but it is a total joy to be a parent 💖
👆continued... not everyone wants to be a solo founder, they’d be happy to create a biz and give CEO reigns to someone else to run.
Otherwise their ideas + insights stay locked up, limits the ecosystem.
the startup hustle is very much ON this holiday season —
founders actively raising, hiring, closing deals, and getting ramped to sell / launch and hit the ground running in Q1
it’s all hands on deck
we see you and appreciate the work ethic!
Every city and suburban downtown should do this - let restaurants and shops spill out into the middle of the road for extra space / distancing.
I’ve only heard of 2 towns in US doing this (Boulder and Carmel) but seems like a no-brainer 👇
BREAKING: Tel Aviv will convert 11 popular streets into pedestrian zones closed to vehicles in the coming weeks, to encourage local trade, allow more outdoor restaurant & cafe seating, & make the city more pedestrian-friendly.

2/After 12 years of building tech startups and partnering amazing founders as an operator, I'm doubling down on startups and continuing to work in service of entrepreneurs -
this time as a Partner at
@NEA
.
More on that here 👇
Founders are bombarded with so much content these days - there’s a blog post (or a 100) for everything.
Still, there’s 1 skill that’s overlooked but perhaps most important.
*Storytelling*
Who has some good content on this? Is there such a thing as a storytelling coach? 🧐
It finally happened.
Met a founding team that deliberately set AND achieved gender parity on their cap table. 50:50 from day 1 ⚖️
Let’s make this the new normal! 💪
This is SO SPOT ON. Angel 😇 investing is status seeking behavior that’s unique to SF — not unlike the prestige that comes w/ philanthropy or community service elsewhere.
It’s a boon for founders for sure, but one has to wonder, is there a better way to “pay it forward”?
How angel investing for social status is a core part of Bay Area tech ecosystem, and is critically missing from other cities trying to grow their tech scenes (
@alex_danco
)
Mark Zuckerberg explains why startups often beat big companies
“Large companies are slow and lack conviction.”
Mark wonders why a large company like Google didn’t beat Facebook in social networking:
“It wasn’t a super novel idea - there was Friendster and Myspace before… It’s
Thinking about future of entrepreneurship, Gen Z is gonna show us age is irrelevant
16yr olds will get 1st LLC before they get their 1st car, opening bank account b/c they have revenue stream, not an allowance
w/ today’s tools, how many biz would u have tried growing up?
GOOD things can happen to startups in a downturn…
✅ competitors fade out
✅ committed teams focus and ship
✅ opportunistic M&A
✅ constraints breed creativity
The disciplined survive and thrive 🚀
Reading the Lux post reminded me that THIS is how I pictured Tech before getting into it. Just a bunch of renegades chasing really hard, world-changing ideas 💡.
Reality is way more incremental of course but hey, it’s still fun right? 🤷🏻♀️
Big news today at Lux:
-We've raised $1 billion in fresh capital to invest in people inventing the future & further shrinking the gap between sci-fi + sci-fact📈
-We're thrilled

. Psst, they're hiring.
1/Talked with a group female founders yesterday and walked away so optimistic, they are fired up and seizing the moment.
The media narrative on female founders is often in a hardship lens (only 2% of VC, struggling to raise), they're sick of it. Ignoring it and moving forward..
Quick 🧵on consumer social trend right now
1/ It's not just about audio as a new format. Or remote-first life.
It's about reclaiming all the things that the last 10 yrs of social media (ahem FB, Insta, Twtr) has taken away from us.
What a pleasure to host a talk with the incredible
@chughesjohnson
today!
Dripping with pearls do wisdom
We talked about operating principles, why strategy hurts, leading through periods of anxiety, the COO role, etc
packed house of founders and operators, I had an absolute
I’d like to see stat on what % of tech employees switch jobs in 2021 👀
I bet it’ll be 2x pre-pandemic level
After hunkering down for 1 year, there’s so much talent on the move, company hiring is 📈and remote has created more talent mobility too
Hang on to your best folks!
This WeWork mess is one of many examples (although this one’s just 🤯) of how employees at high flying co’s get short end of the stick.
Employees - start asking hard Qs about revenue and economics, instead of perks and 🦄 status.
Founders - don’t be greedy.
I don’t envy Chief People Officers right now, tough gig in ever changing environment
The back-to-office thrash is real 😣
- delay return to office?
- require vaccine or not?
- who to mask?
- what about burnout?
- dealing w/ great resignation
- making virtual work work
Trying to build a better target list for founders...
Among pre-seed / seed funds, who is active in
#futureofwork
right now?
Especially w/ expertise in workplace collaboration + communication
Ideally having real Operator chops and insights for this space
Please suggest! 👀
Hadn’t seen this data side by side 👇 but wow it puts things in perspective
Women > 70% Health & Education workforce (supporting infrastructure of our society) but still
Only 20% of university leadership,
14% Startup CEOs
7% Fortune 500
4% Unicorn CEOs
1% Public CEOs
Remember when business trips were a total chore?
Now, I can’t wait! Never been so happy to be booking business travel again to see people in person😁
LA is up first, then NYC. Lezzz go!
REAL talk about Miami trip (some of you will understand)
wore 👠 for first time since pandemic started and OH MY GOD my feet are destroyed. So painful.
2+ yrs of living in 👟 and now I don’t know how I can go back!! 🤨
Anyone who’s worked with me knows I’m kind of *obsessed* with team dynamics and culture as a biz lever. So I really can’t wait to read this and see how
@bhorowitz
breaks it down. Ready to nerd out on this one! 🤓
I've been using
@perplexity_ai
since Jan 2023 but I still get that magical moment... this is just so awesome and useful, can't believe it's this easy to find out facts
Like this morning, doing some digging on Stripe early history and how the startup avoided the commoditization
People sometimes ask me why my family left Russia, what made my parents flee and start a new life…
THIS is why 💔
No one wants to live under thugs and dictators, in a closed society, waging war on its own people in the name of nationalist pride
Putin is a scourge on humanity
This is anecdotal of course but there is a trend…
Founders are moving to SF (or coming back)
Founders are traveling to SF Bay to raise
and seeking out f2f meetings to build relationships
Did we turn back the clock to 2019? or 2009?
Topic I’ve been wanting to write on for a long time -
@Twitter
vs
@Uber
culture and how it shapes the biz. Should I do it? 👩🏻💻
One block apart but totally different worlds, two extremes of a spectrum, but how awesome would it be if you could combine the best of both.
The only antidote to these times is to go BUILD
Build a solution
Build a company
Build community
Build a movement
Roll up those sleeves and create the world you want to live in
... and of course VOTE 🗳 informed at ALL levels of govt!

I typically cringe at 2x2s but these charts are really on point on types of leadership that matter. “Angelic troublemaker” is especially useful and doesn’t get enough credit 😇
Gotta love 2nd and 3rd time founders, the no B.S. factor is refreshing and they're under no illusion that investors will do company building for them
"Value Add" is reduced to:
- Please stay out of my way
- Be there for me in crisis
Totally different expectations 👌
When I moved from operating into venture earlier this year, I committed to be transparent about how I make decisions
Openness is a building block for *inclusion*. Takes a bit of effort to make it explicit but it's worth it.
Part 1 👇 Founder Scorecard
Writing a personalized letter to a founding team to kick off our working together - love this part!
It's my favorite investor ritual (though not typical for a VC). Marks the moment, speaks to the uniqueness of each team and sets tone of partnership
No cookie cutter advice✨
👋2⃣0⃣2⃣2⃣ .... predictions?!
Nope, no way! *Perspectives* are more interesting. What's top of mind for investors is a way more useful signal than hyperbolic future predictions
I asked 10 trailblazing GPs to share 2022 Perspectives, read below👇
The COO role is not well understood,
@DavidSacks
does a great job of describing the essence in this post. It’s not a role so much as a motion. Cadence, execution, scaling companywide.
You don’t technically need a COO but this is what the great ones do.
I’ve come to realize that morning workouts are an essential part of effective leadership. I have so much more clarity + energy on days I 🏃🏻♀️, and conversely more stress and emotions when I don’t.
“Put your oxygen mask on first” — you’ll show up as a better leader.
What to get for Mother’s Day...
Mom with kids < 18 yr old - just leave her alone
Mom with kids >18 yr olds - spend some time with her
... yes it is that simple 😁
We’re BACK!
Talking shop, in person, with this VC crew was pure magic 🤩💥 — new funds, new deals, kids, life moves

Your best mentors are the people who tell you the truth, even things you don't want to hear that you need to work on b/c they care enough to do that
They see your potential and raise bar higher for you
Who challenges you? Who pushes u out of your comfort zone? Hang on to that!
Meetings on Zooms are fine, people are pleasant, productive, it’s efficient and sometimes even a little fun
But then I meet up w/ someone truly awesome in person and it reminds me, like a flashback, wow, we had it so good before!
In person is just better. ✨
