NHTSA just put out a proposal to, for the first time, rate cars for their safety to pedestrians. We're going to have to make this opportunity count, so stay tuned for how you can comment.
Thank you
@RepRaskin
and the 31 other members of Congress urging
@USDOT
to better protect pedestrians. Larger cars & trucks are not the sole cause of the rise in pedestrian deaths, but the federal government has the direct ability to fix the known issues that make them lethal.
Last night the U.S. House of Representatives voted to prohibit USDOT from requiring pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking on heavy vehicles. They are trying to prevent a USDOT rule that Congress previously ordered USDOT to adopt!
What we mean when we say that
#speedkills
: Higher speeds literally lead to more fatalities.
Curbing speeds - through ISA and other measures - is a proven method for saving lives.
So don't most folks see this as an urgent need?
We don’t need a scientific break through to address the number one killer of children and young adults. We just the need the will to change how we design and use our streets.
We need a MUTCD that puts the safety of people walking and moving over the convenience of people in cars. Use our template to tell
@SecretaryPete
to rewrite the MUTCD in a way that puts safety and equity first. It should take about 5 minutes.
This says it ALL. Thank you for showing up 💯

Raise your hand if you're tired of seeing victim-blaming messages in the media when covering pedestrian fatalities ✋✋✋ We are too so we put this template together to use our collective voices to change the narrative.
NHTSA put out a proposal to rate cars for their safety to pedestrians, but vehicles that fail still get a 5-star safety rating. Do you think this vehicle is safe for pedestrians? Should it get a 5-star safety rating? We say no & if you agree, tell NHSTA ↴

City planners and lawmakers trying to figure out why they keep designing cities for cars but don't see improved health outcomes, better air quality, or higher levels of happiness among residents.

We continually frame road violence as an outcome of personal choices yet we all know very well it's the result of our cities choices.

"Any community that is interested in street life—or human lives—must carefully consider the speed at which it allows cars to drive in places where people are walking.”
The MUTCD says 20 people must risk their lives in 1 hour to justify a crossing signal, like in this case. How many lives have been detrimentally impacted by this?

USDOT leader Pete Buttigieg says roads aren't just for cars - they're for people who move, walk, bike and roll. So what kind of shift could this mean for U.S. transportation policy? Join us Monday to find out.

Let's put this another way - 99.9% of pedestrian deaths have nothing to do with pedestrians being distracted by their phones. That's data. So why do DOT's keep blaming victims instead of focusing on safe streets?
WATCH THIS VIDEO to see how MUTCD puts people in peril. People remain in danger trying to cross this location to access food. Or they must walk 25 min out of their way to use a crossing. Would we make motorists do this?

Transportation is responsible for 1/3 of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions – converting short driving journeys to walking journeys can reduce this impact significantly.
On average, 118 people were killed every day on roads in the U.S. in 2021, totaling nearly 43,000 fatalities for the year. An additional 2.5 million people were injured. This represents a 27 percent increase in deaths in just a decade.

"the way we even lay out our communities I think is important, can we make them more walkable?"
Why yes, yes we can,
@SecretaryPete
Appreciate the recognition that putting homes and important places near each other is a critical climate solution. And totally within our power.
"So the ideal place for a teenager is probably a neighborhood with sidewalks and bike lanes, ample public transit, and one which has schools, shops, and hangouts located within close range to home.”
"This is why things like [walkable and bikeable] “complete streets” are so important. If they can encourage some of that mode-shifting that recognizes that not every trip needs to be in a single-occupant vehicle, that has a climate impact."
@SecretaryPete
For the work ahead, we recommend this presentation from

NHTSA is announcing a new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard that will make automatic emergency braking, including pedestrian AEB, standard on all passenger cars and light trucks. This is expected to significantly reduce rear-end and pedestrian crashes.
Here's what we sent in to the Federal Register on the MUTCD. And with that, happy Friday! Don't forget to send your comment in by 11:59 PM EST today. Thanks to all of you who put serious energy into making our collective voices heard.

It's a crisis and deserves to be treated like a crisis. Graph from USDOT's new National Roadway Safety Strategy - the dramatic increase in pedestrian fatalities.
People remain in peril trying to cross this location just to access a food outlet. Or travel far out of their way to get to a crossing. Would we make motorists do this to access a destination? Today is the last day to send your comments in on the MUTCD!
A new public library in my area has these work stations for caregivers with babies! Maybe these are common in other places but Ive never seen anything like this before.
“Making neighborhoods more walkable increases the # of people who shop there. Pedestrians may spend as much as 65% more than drivers. It also boosts employment. Biking & walking provide an estimated return on investment of $11.80 for every $1 invested.”
"That's a narrative that lets us accept the dangers of traffic as an inherent cost of our mobility, rather than asking how we can save our loved ones' lives."
Well, our ideal future certainly is but we’re not going to get there by ignoring walking advocacy in transportation planning discussions. It can’t be an after thought but needs to be seen as a legitimate transportation option.
Pedestrian deaths rose once again in 2022. More and more people are killed on our streets by vehicles, yet federal regulators still want to give top safety ratings to cars that fail pedestrian safety tests. Tell them this is unacceptable!
Imagine the people-first lessons we could learn if we put nearly 1500 hrs of research into the causes behind all fatal collisions in a city - beyond the police report. That's exactly what Oregon Walks did. Join us next week for the takeaways:

It's the road design.
This happens often. Driver stops in curb lane for pedestrians who begin crossing and driver in left lane, inattentive, visibility partially blocked by stopped car, driving fast per road design, keeps going.
