had a three hour long discussion on compensation in the legal profession. Starting out, I was personally very ambitious and determined to purse a career as a lawyer and decided to leave because I no longer could “afford” being part of the profession. (1/n)
Because there is an implicit understanding that fresh law graduates add less value to firms, and are paid in “experience” as opposed to money. It’s almost taboo wanting to earn more as it’s expected you prioritise your learning over everything. I could not find many people to
Pak, and I hope to see more of these initiatives in the future. There is sooo much more I want to say lol but I do not regret any of it, I did learn a lot and it helped me get to places. But I feel it could be easier for others if there is more information available out there.
trajectory of what a “real” (also a term used by so many of my law firm colleagues to put down those who work in house) lawyer is. As for those who are sticking it out: I am in awe of you and wish you the best. I think the talk was a great step towards salary transparency in
notch law firms that offer great experiences and have big clients, but after a while it started feeling like the path was too long and treacherous with the already dwindling economy. I choose not to have a victim mentality as I made a conscious choice to leave a traditional
relate to because most who stuck it out long enough came from a wealthy background where less salary did not matter much, and those who did stick it out had lifestyles that could not be compared to graduates of the same age but in different professions. I have worked at top
I went to a desi store in Georgetown yesterday and the owner was a pashtun lady, I just greeted her warmly and asked her “aapka taaluq kahan se hai” and by the end she told me that the samosas I ordered were on the house 🥹 the hospitality of our people has no bounds
I provide my perspective on the debate so far. Been sitting around for a week but glad they published it on my birthday😅. Happy (or not so happy) reading!
aimlessly walked across one of my favourite neighbourhoods, bouquet in hand, dressed up, listening to this one Bryce Vine song on repeat and smiling away - the place has its issues but I do want to appreciate a society where a lone woman can do all that without being bothered
recently got added to this group called “Subtle Nixor Dating” and honestly i get y’all have quarantine boredom but damn...can u pls move past your A levels life..
thinking about the time in seventh grade when I gathered like 7-8 girls and formed a “band” called the 💀 eastern punk rockers 💀 which was mostly a choir. We sang “we will rock you” by Queen…at a prize distribution ceremony…in BEACONHOUSE GUJRAT. 😭 cringe but no regrets ✌️
Attended the talk on a Sunday night 🤡 I really don’t know why I care that much about this issue anymore. But the summary is that law employers are victims of market forces and cannot do much. Talk was mostly dominated by senior, male lawyers. I couldn’t get the chance to speak-
so i made a whatsapp group of all the alumni volley team members from lums who are currently in Karachi and now I found a court for us to play a game in but most of them are married and can’t find time for one game... and i hate it here
Aman was a brilliant student. So many of our best are choosing to leave the legal profession because law firms refuse to change their exploitative practices.
I left my job yesterday and got the most wholesome farewell and it just filled my heart with joy, gratitude and belief in myself. My biggest achievements are the genuine connections I make. Not everything needs to be reduced to a line on a CV, or a flex during a job interview.
Gift giving is so beautiful. I called a friend who works in the police to ask him his current address (he moves around a lot, so we couldn’t pull off a surprise) and he said “yaar zyada tarh Mujhay log tabhi call kartay hain jab koi masla hou, this was a pleasant surprise” 😭😭
before the plane was about to take off, my mom took out her phone to text my dad "take off" and took 10 minutes to find the airplane emoji
moms should be protected at all costs
“Time and again, young lawyers are confronted with a difficult decision while looking for their first job: whether to prioritise career growth in the legal profession or secure enough income to cover their basic expenses.” Thought provoking piece by co-written by

Sir, no one is taking away from the respect due to any senior lawyer who makes it by “working 3 jobs” or hard work. But should the cycle be allowed to perpetuate? The fact that so many people have felt this, does mean that this “lazy assumption” originated from real experiences.
@FulbrightPrgrm
the fact that you have not waived the GRE requirement shows the utter disregard which you have for students and their asymmetrical footing to take the exam. I have been trying to access the ETS browser for a week now, tried every troubleshooting technique, updated
knowing that you didn't spend a dime or take out a loan and had the most financially stress-free experience kinda helps. depends on priorities 🥹 for many its either that, or nothing.
no matter how hard i try, i start resenting the guys my friends end up marrying no matter how sweet/nice they are. because it almost always means that i won't be able to meet my friends as much because of their new role as a wife and it sucks...or maybe i need to grow up idk
the past 24 hours have been one of my wildest ever since quarantine. Got added to different facebook groups: LUMS x NUST meme war, LUMS v IBA meme war, a group where people pretend they are ants (?) and lastly, a group named "Devil in the form of a WH*RE."
if you consider yourself as someone who has 'made it' in any capacity...pls help others or even reply to their queries, it takes a lot for people just to ask for help.
i think someone on soul bitches reported me because i tagged a friend and commented “boys r so stupid” on a video in which guys were actually doing a really stupid no rush challenge and that’s the tea for today..... am i a bad person
took me a while to process all that has happened in the last few hours...guys i know i've been crying about not getting my last days at lums but its 22nd may and most karachiites would have been on the same flight..its downright eerie..things do happen for a reason.

authored an op-ed in today's Dawn!
"Out of 190 countries dotting the globe, 156 have a better and more efficient judicial system than Pakistan’s.
It’s good to see some dialogue. A senior lawyer seemed to agreed on most points regarding the plight of junior lawyers, except the role of senior lawyers themselves. Some points stood out:

thank you for taking out the time. Came a long way from the concept of law classes.

wrote something for DAWN today.
"Taking a closer look at most ordinances passed in Pakistan’s history, it is evident that the requirements laid down in Article 89 have been flouted time and again by various presidents.
