The best way out of it is to ask questions of the person such as what they do, where they’re from, why they’re there, etc. Most people not only enjoy talking about themselves, but it shows you’re interested in them. That more easily leads to the deeper discussions you enjoy.

That’s not the point. It’s not that he doesn’t trust himself, but as a public figure, he could too easily be accused of improper behavior when nothing happened. It becomes a he-said-she-said with no proof given or necessary, and all that remains is a ruined family and reputation.
