What does it really mean to be open source when a great deal of the magic is in the corpus that the model was trained on? Are the 14.8T tokens that DeepSeek was reportedly trained on freely available? OpenAI claims ChatGPT output was used in part to produce their corpus.
NEW from @CristinaCriddle and myself on the growing furore around DeepSeek's alleged distillation of OpenAI's ChatGPT -- which should be noted is a fairly rampant practice in China and the US.

@mbeisen @deepseek_ai @OpenAI Okay but isn't a single test like that meaningless anecdata? Also, who cares about NVidia stocks? It's just some company whose stocks go up and down at the whim of people that change their minds on a daily basis. It will keep going up & down. (Coming from an avid user of LLMs.)

@JonnyTempleton @AdamRutherford What exactly am I signalling? That I find Elon Musk's behaviour alarming and I am concerned it may suggest that he is more than a little sympathetic to white nationalist priorities, or at least thinks it benefits him politically to signal to those people?

@JonnyTempleton @AdamRutherford I am not a fan of tribes. So I am happy to entertain your perspective without regard for whatever group you may belong to (or be classified in by your average behaviour). I wouldn't mind if you extended to me the same courtesy.
