The selfish gene is still an excellent resource and has largely stood the test of time. My book, The Social Instinct, is also about this very topic of how cooperation evolves on earth. I would love for it to find new readers.

@DrZhana @JDVance Not strictly true. There are scenarios where evolution even favours *harming* your kin (where competition is hyper-local and zero-sum). Well known example is fig wasps, where siblings murder one another soon after hatching.
