I had genuinely never seen a child with measles in my paediatrics career until 2 weeks ago and I’ve seen multiple every day since. Not a single one in a child who had their MMR (even just first dose if not old enough for their preschool booster yet). Vaccinate your children!

@DrBryanLeyva *In America. Not in literally any comparatively developed country does it come anywhere near. I’ve treated just two children for (non-life threatening) gunshot wounds in 7 years of paediatric emergency medicine (and 11 years total of paediatrics).

As a paediatrician I can confirm that a bag of pasta, however cheap, does not constitute a complete diet for a child. And that apart from a very tiny minority of cases, no parent is letting their kids go hungry if there’s literally anything they can do about it. Cruel nonsense.

Personally I think to pare down the whole experience of an undergraduate medical degree (mine was 6 years) to ‘things I need to know most days as a middle England GP’ is to fundamental misunderstand the purpose of education. Could I have done it in 4? Yes. Am I glad I didn’t? Yes

My medical degree took 5 years to complete. I'm very confident that at least 50% of it was useless and forgotten by everyone within a week. I learnt the vast majority of my skills as a junior doctor in Stoke. Apprenticeship med training is a great idea and 4 years is long enough

Last year I couldn’t visit my wife when she was induced for 4 days and couldn’t visit our son when he was admitted for jaundice, both at the trust I’m a consultant at. And I had it ok because at least I always knew my family would be coming out alive and well. This is a disgrace.

I must add, I could not have done it without the fantastic training and support of top class consultants and colleagues @Leic_hospital @LeicChildHosp It is a great place to train in PEM as evidenced by 4/4 of us getting first choice consultant posts this year. @rcpch_trainees

Feel like a total buzz kill to say this but 2 shifts into the 2 week firework frenzy that is the Diwali-Halloween-GuyFawkes period let me say this: the sooner fireworks can only be sold to, and set off at, licensed events with proper safety regs, well away from kids, the better.

@doctor_oxford A couple of things: it’s clearly nonsense that the EU mandates 5 year degrees as most grad courses in Uk are already less than that. The proposal was made in 2013 so has nothing to do with a “Brexit opportunity” and is typical of the clutch at straws approach to selling Brexit.

Absolutely. Not least for children who, for the overwhelming most part, do not suffer severe effects from coronavirus itself. The withdrawal of social safety nets, school the biggest, will be causing harm to vulnerable children at risk of abuse, neglect or mental health crises.

We should not underestimate the collateral damage of this lockdown. Coronavirus is not the only danger we are facing. As the weeks go by mental health deteriorates further, more cancer goes undiagnosed and deprivation spreads. This costs lives too.

Reaching out to colleagues working in kids EDs this week - it’s been incredibly busy, and we are listening. Today we launch our joint position statement w/ @RCollEM & @theRCN that recommends children are prioritised in winter planning ❄️👫

@fourhourtarget @theveindoc So the increasingly polarising view which paints medics as fear-mongering cravers of lockdown is so false. Vast majority want nothing to do with covid and want to be able to run their normal clinics, surgical lists, diagnostics etc but know they can’t if covid escalates unchecked

We were told as consultants we should no longer buy pizza for the rest of the team because it wouldn’t come individually packaged and we weren’t allowed to have more than 2 people in the staff room at any one time. But do go on…

@AVgoffy @AVFCOfficial @JackGrealish Come off it mate. They drew up a release clause for so much money we have rebuilt half a team off it. We nearly had to sell him to stop the club being wound up, he dragged us back to where we belong. Nobody is turning down being a £100m player - pretty impressive company.

Very pleased that amongst other standards for paediatric emergency and acute care set out today, the importance of play specialists in Paeds ED is recognised as essential. They are an absolutely vital part of our team at LRI and should be everywhere.

@piersmorgan @ManUtd Except out of the last 28 FA Cups there have only been 3 not won by Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea or City. Giving the CL spot would have been essentially redundant and the big teams definitely take it seriously.

This is tremendously sad. Vish was a wonderful neonatologist, who was the heart and soul of the NNU. He was a very kind and patient mentor to many a Birmingham trainee paediatrician finding our feet in NICU rotations over the years and will be greatly missed.

@_katieknight_ @rhiannonlucyc @RCPCHtweets @AssocPEM @LondonPaeds @Damian_Roland Not sure about anticipating a surge in numbers specifically, but we have early help workers based in our ED now to direct families to any financial help they can access. Anticipating huge numbers who are unable to adequately feed their children or heat their homes.

“Nationalising children” is the most pathetic, empty, meaningless ideological rhetoric. If you can’t in 2020 of all years, see that children may be in extreme poverty through no fault of their parents then you are either so out of touch or so callous your opinion shouldn’t count.
