I wish for it to be known that I'm recovering from monkeypox, having tested positive for it 2 weeks ago. The irony that I am the 1st reporter in Chicago who reported on it 2 months ago and then contracted it is not lost on me. It's serious, and it's a dreadful disease. Avoid it.
Recalling the awkwardness of the last time we talked on the phone when I said “I’m a Hoosier by birth, but like all the good gay men from Indiana, I moved to Chicago,” and he said “OK.”
Imagine if the CTA screened in the stations in the Dan Ryan, Ike and Kennedy medians. Imagine how much more pleasant, how less loud it would be, perhaps people would even breathe in fewer fumes.
Dude on my Red Line train just walked into my car, smashed the directional signs at either end with a wrench, and walked out. We’re still heading north. Total breakdown of order on the CTA. It’s always something when I ride, but this is the worst.
"It's pretty much a bust. Our numbers are not nearly what we were told they were going to be," said Murfreesboro Mayor Jim O'Neal. "We anticipated 40,000-plus visitors … It cost us money we didn't recoup because of this exaggerated number."

100-year-old Bea Lumpkin, daughter of Jewish Labor Bund members, who took part in student strikes against fascism and militarism, hunger strikes for unemployment relief and the protests against the framing of the Scottsboro Nine, is here.
I will be leaving Chicago & moving out of state on March 11, should you want to unfollow me once I stop tweeting local news. Remember me as someone who wore Speedos at Promontory Point and ate Billy Goat cheeseburgers with great relish up Michigan Avenue en route to Second Story.
I’m delighted to announce that I’m starting at
@stlouisbiz
next month, initially covering entrepreneurship, innovation, investment and startups. Greater St. Louis has so much potential for growth in the 21st century: the decisions being made now have such great ramifications.
I’ll take a moment to tweet about Chicago and say Allison Arwady is one of the most forthcoming, professional and knowledgeable people I’ve ever interviewed.
Lynching is now a federal hate crime, a longstanding priority of
@RepBobbyRush
now achieved as his time in Congress comes to a close.
@HydeParkHerald
story tk.
To the photographer’s defense, I cannot imagine posing him in a photoshoot. Dude’s more intimidating, staring down reporters, than the public realizes.
@dozygay
someone tweeted about this months ago saying that gay men hated this because she was the only kind of person who was nice to us in middle school

“ Bonnie was a gum-chewing waitress and Clyde was a two-bit hood out on parole. But from the beginning, they both seemed to have the knack of entertaining people.”
First time at the gym since February, can lift nearly 70% as much as I could before I suffered renal failure and had part of my right lung surgically removed please clap

— there is no better way to learn journalism than at a community news organization, and there is no more interesting neighborhood in Chicago than Hyde Park.
I do not really follow sports, but I googled him, saw that he used to work in Chicago, wondered if he wrote the column that ran on front of the sports section the day after the US women’s soccer team won the 1999 World Cup, and —
No doubt the NFL is considering postponing the rest of this game - but how? This late in the season, a game of this magnitude is crucial to the regular-season outcome ... which suddenly seems so irrelevant.
@NickTagliaferro
One time I asked about enforcement mechanisms for Chicago’s wage theft ordinance and was told that the media was the enforcement mechanism, bringing issues to the surface.
can someone please tell me the story about the at-grade nj clover interchange? it's been in my head since i read about it on wikipedia like 15 years ago
@OregonMapGuy
Since moving to Arkansas, I’ve seen a shockingly large number of divorced men my age (30) on the apps with kids, which I take were conceived when they were married to women at 21 or so. So there may be some number of LGBTQ people raising kids from their former hetero marriages.
Kudos to
@aarondgettinger
who agreed to an interview with us on a topic that is not easy for many patients to talk about: contracting monkeypox. He says at its peak, his pain was a 7 or 8 out of 10.
He’s sharing his story
@cbschicago
at 10 so others know how serious it is.

I feel like pointing out how I store my indulgent Costco Topo Chico buy. Two refrigerated bottles at a time. One gets replaced as I drink one.
Twenty-five years on, the Woodlawn Green Line demise is still so strange to think about. Probably the last time in America that a neighborhood rallied to have existing mass transit destroyed therein.
Packing glass w/ copies of the Herald, other Chicago papers & the Arkansas Democrat Gazette.
I’m moving to Little Rock. I’ll be on the business desk, covering emerging business, consumer trends & a health care business minibeat.
I’m excited to be west of the Mississippi again!
Lori Lightfoot always took me seriously as a relatively new reporter from a neighborhood outlet, which I appreciate. She also said, as I flubbed a complicated COVID question, “Aaron’s playing epidemiologist again,” which hurt my feelings. A politician for and of her time.
@opinonhaver
cool, thanks, did local reporting in chicago for a half-decade and haven't been able to verbalize the crux of the problem that can arise as well as you just did
Three months’ delayed
@HydeParkHerald
goodbye piece, late because I nearly died in the immediate aftermath of not working there.
Five years — what a run in that most interesting neighborhood in a city of cities.

It was the end of the day in lower Manhattan, by Battery Park. The man complained that the trumpeter was ruining the golden silence of a public place and lost his temper. There might have been something about playing obnoxiously around some Jewish memorial, too.
Wrote sympathetically about cruising. Feel like this is a small bit of penitence as a reporter from the times when my trade would literally publish the names of men arrested for criminalized sex.
can someone pleeeeaaaasssseeeee hire me to write about monkeypox ahead of IML and pride? the lesions are apparently manifesting on the genitals and perianal regions, which no one in the mainstream media, which I'm going to assume is grossed out by gay sex, is reporting
