At BusinessLDN, our mission is to make London the best city in the world in which to do business, working with and for the whole UK.
London, UK
Joined December 2011
With the Government's comprehensive spending review now underway, yesterday we brought together members to discuss what firms need to see from policymakers @Virgin's amazing Whitfield Studios space alongside our host @MStausberg. Against a backdrop of underwhelming UK growth forecasts, the CSR should provide funding to match positive rhetoric from the Chancellor last week around investing to move our economy forward. Thank you to everyone who took part in our roundtables to crowdsource ideas for what London needs to fire on all cylinders, alongside some of our existing key asks, which include: On housing, a more ambitious Affordable Homes Programme, combined with greater flexibility around how funding for social housing can be spent. On connectivity, @TfL being granted the long-term financial settlement it needs to provide certainty to its multibillion pound UK-wide supply chain and deliver urgently required extensions to the Bakerloo, DLR and Overground lines. On skills, turning encouraging words about apprenticeship levy reform into action with a step-by-step roadmap for making a new Growth & Skills Levy a reality, in close consultation with levy payers, training providers and the wider business community. And on devolution, as we approach 25 years of the London Mayoralty, giving the capital a 'trailblazer' deal similar to those struck with the West Midlands and Manchester - empowering the city to take major decisions about its future, underpinned by local expertise and understanding.

"Transport for London's vital investment programme keeps London moving, helps businesses to grow and supports thousands of jobs nationwide. "For that programme to have maximum impact over the years ahead, @TfL and its UK-wide supply chain need an ambitious multi-year settlement from the spending review which will give them the certainty they need to plan and deliver growth-enhancing projects. "These include signalling upgrades on the Piccadilly Line; extensions to the Bakerloo and DLR lines; and the West London Orbital, which will together unlock tens of thousands of new homes and billions of pounds in additional economic activity.” Our Chief Executive John Dickie on new @HATCHglobal analysis of how TfL investment supports growth and thousands of jobs across the country - more in @railmedia ⬇

“Another interest rate cut will provide some solace to firms which are struggling to keep on top of the rising cost of doing business. “With a sizeable employer national insurance hike now only two months away, however, it’s vital that the current spending review delivers the funding needed to match the Chancellor’s warm words on growth last week. “Agreeing a long-term funding deal for Transport for London to drive investment across its UK-wide supply chain, expanding the Affordable Homes Programme to help tackle the housing crisis, and putting the capital’s devolution deal on a par with those agreed with other major UK cities would all help to restore business confidence and support growth.” Our @muniya_b on the latest from @bankofengland 📈
The Monetary Policy Committee voted by a majority of 7-2 to reduce #BankRate to 4.5%. Find out more in our #MonetaryPolicyReport

On the @BBCNews channel this week, our Chief Executive John Dickie speaks with @BBCMaryam about why building a third runway at @HeathrowNews is "a really powerful way of driving growth in Britain... "In the first few years, there will be tens of billions of private investment spend in London and the south east, that will go through the whole of the UK aviation supply chain... "It will give us much greater connectivity with the rest of the world - Britain is a services super power, but you can only sustain that as an international business centre on an island if you've got really good connectivity with the rest of the world... "The Government and Heathrow have both been absolutely clear that this expansion can only happen if tough rules around noise, around carbon, and around air quality can be met"🎥⬇

Great to bring together voices from across the public and private sectors for the launch of our new report with @wsp on tax increment financing (TIF) yesterday. The TIF model empowers local governments to borrow against future tax revenues from investments in order to fund those investments in the first place, with the framework recently used to support an extension to the Northern Line in Battersea. Huge thanks to @deirdrecostigan for joining us, and highlighting how TIF could be a crucial tool for the Government as it seeks innovative ways to support growth, and one which has been proven to be successful in the past. Deirdre also talked us through the case for the West London Orbital WLO extension to the Overground, and the work to ensure the WLO is included in @TfL's business plan. Read the report in full ⬇

“As an engine of growth for the whole UK, London has a key role to play in helping the economy reach full throttle. "Backing a third runway at Heathrow sends an important signal that the UK is open for business and will enable Britain’s hub airport to seize opportunities presented by rising demand for travel, while also supporting business growth. "London’s airports are gateways to the world but decades of dither and delay mean that they are operating close to or above capacity so expansion – in line with strict carbon, noise and air quality targets – is long overdue..." Read our Chief Executive John Dickie's full response to the Chancellor's speech this morning: Sign-up for our Future London conference to hear from @HeathrowNews on how international connectivity benefits the capital:
Growth is our national mission, to get more money in people's pockets. We're going further and faster to get Britain building, unlocking critical national infrastructure projects and stopping the blockers who have stifled growth for too long.
