Today we had the first milk pick up of 2022. 70% of our herd is in milk at a time. One of the goals for the year is to get that number to atleast 80%.
I'm honestly blessed and privileged to be working with my family towards building a sustainable agribusiness.

On average our cows recieve 8kg of concentrates in the form of dairy meal and 12 -14kg of roughage in the form of lucurne and cultivated pasture. Our goal is to milk an average of 250 cattle per day. This can only be achieved once we can produce all of own feed.

Sunday milking session done.
Our cows are in milk for 300 days.
Cows udders are washed with a disinfectant udder wash before milking are then sprayed post milking with a disinfectant spray to promote quality milk and animal health.

Feed is the most important cost on any dairy farm. Our cattle recieve a combination of concentrates in the form of dairy meal suiwel 20 and roughage through cultivated pasture plus lucurne for high milk production. Our goal is to produce a higher % of our own feed to limit cost.

Preparing our soil to plant 20HA of oats and 10HA of Japanese radish for our winter feed flow.
The cows will graze 6-7 hours a day on a rotational grazing system using solar fencing.

Our milk is tested and collected every second day. No physical contact between the milk and any personal occurs throughout the entire process.

We've made the decision to plant spinach in four week intervals on raised seedbeds for a constant product for the informal market. In summer we'll rotate with baby marrow. We also in the process of applying for a S.A GAP certificate.

Mortalities are a reality in any livestock operation, the financial implications can be heavy on the business cashflow.
Postmortems are done by a local vet.
This postmortem revealed that the cow died of Anaplasmosis possibly brought on by tick or hornfly.

One of our new mothers struggled to calve,luckily we noticed in time and were able to assist. This resulted in inflammation in her hinds legs. To get her standing she was injected with
-Duplicilin
-Pyroflan
-Vitamin booster
She was standing in an hour with little assistance.🙏🏾🙏🏾

I find it so offensive and condescending when established farmers come to the farm wanting to buy tractors or the little machinery I have. Honestly, How do you expect me to grow? I'd much rather we sit and brainstorm on solutions that can benefit both of us in the long run.

Farming has challenged me in ways I could never imagine. From high input cost, waking up to find my animals slaughtered, veld fires, low seed germination to the actual daily grind, its all tough and never displayed online. Risks are high but at the end worth it when you love it.

We bottle feed our calves after 24 hours. This ensures the calves daily milk intake can be monitored. We can also monitor the health and average daily weight gain of the calves. Note my scale broke so if you know where I can get one let me know?🙈🙈

Good point.I think we should think of strategies to do both. Informal market doesn't necessarily mean driving around with a loaded bukkie. Forming relationships with vendors and spaza shops can be beneficial while also selling bulk to formal markets.Diversifying should work too.

We had to physical milk the first milk and feed it to the calve. Colostrum is the first milk a cow produces after calving. It is rich in antibodies and provides the calves with essential vitamins and minerals to develop.

Very valid and interesting question. I work in the office. My role amongst other things is monitoring that each cows yield is registered on the system, in the picture you referring to I had to help manually input the cow number on the monitor.

I'm not a vet but I give them 40m of long acting Terramycin intramuscular administration.
I'm also intensifying my dipping program because my area received a lot of rain.
You can also use preflix if the cow has dry faeces.
Check for yellowing in the vulva and eyes.Hope this helps
