Seven years since Harry Kane scored a non-penalty goal at the Emirates. This is no slight on him at all, he’s one of the best 9s around, but ask any Arsenal fan and he has never approached Rooney or Drogba levels of nemesis. It’s massively overplayed.

Arsenal were five points clear of City with the same games played on Xmas Day. They’ve reached the home game against them three points clear with a game in hand. I think you’d have signed for that before the restart. The chronology of results makes things feel different.

Neville’s prediction doesn’t upset Arsenal fans. Loads of Arsenal fans still think City win it. It’s that he can’t grasp the depth, substance and repeatability of what’s been built. He missed the story, dating back to summer 2021. He can’t compute it, he thinks it’s Leicester.

Different styles - and can’t be expected to have the same impact! - but Jesus, Zinchenko and Tielemans (?) would remind me a bit of those Wijnaldum, Mane etc singings Liverpool made. Good PL performers who haven’t fully ‘broken out’ coming into prime years. Moderate price bracket

Arsenal’s No 6 in this system will have White/Tomiyasu and Zinchenko/KT in close attendance, fast centre-backs who squeeze the line up and active forwards who press from the front. The distances should be small, I really don’t think it needs to be a defensive Superman.

That Arteta/Anfield thing is a bit of a gimmick, but it’s obvious to anyone with two brain cells that it’s not *the extent* of Arsenal’s preparation for that game. Howe had players sheep-herding, Fergie had the geese - imagine all kinds of off-beat, wacky stuff goes on.

Final Arsenal paradox of the season: with some notable duff performances, the football is now far more 'big club' like and closer Arteta's ideal than it was when the FA Cup was won. Yet fan opinion of him, entirely understandably, is much lower. It's an interesting dynamic.

Ramsdale has had a decent night after being left in it a couple of times early. That line-breaking pass into midfield in the first half possibly the takeaway moment of the game.

@gunnerblog In a non-football context, I saw someone point out that we forget how many users populating the replies are quite literally children.

On Partey: can live with a few stray passes, he wants to attract opponents and take risks. But the way opponents are dribbling past him like he's a mannequin is a real problem. Wondering why Arsenal sink deep? Not the only reason, but there's not much CM engagement.

All of the criticisms of Rob Holding and how he affects Arsenal’s line and build-up are absolutely spot on. But there’s a level of outrage about the fact he’s even playing which I find a bit silly. He didn’t start a league game until March 19. That tells you Arteta’s opinion.

Apart from when the opposition were called Burnley, Xhaka's just had his best season for Arsenal and was really consistent. He's carried that form on here.

The tracking of Gabriel Magalhaes by Arsenal fans has reached the JFK assassination stage I see.

Apart from the red against Burnley last season, Xhaka has been consistently good under Arteta and very reliable. He’s no Vieira, Fabregas or even Partey on talent, but that’s no reason to call him a ‘disgrace’. Petulant from Neville, who has had a stinker of a season.

That game was a decent encapsulation of Arteta’s Arsenal: good organisation, smooth build-up play but too many moves breaking down before they result in a shot and and some chances conceded from set-pieces.

I wouldn't be surprised if Arteta and his staff were more satisfied with the team now than they were in August. Yet everyone on the outside feels worse.

Chelsea are assembling a collection of young talent the likes of which the Europa Conference League has never seen.

It’s funny because Arsenal *feel* a lot more dangerous than their shots and negligible xG suggest. Three or four better decisions/passes per game and those numbers could improve. Midfield quality needed, but it feels doable.

Arsenal can generate more money from sales by buying better (this has happened) and reaching faster decisions on fringe/young players, which I think is where there’s room for improvement. Although not an easy skill to get right.

No manager has indefinite immunity but I think Arteta is now out of the territory where one bad result or performance prompts the big, soul-searching questions. Which is good for everyone because that's exhausting and boring. He can end up back there, of course.
