, lacking an impact factor, is not considered a valid publication according to their criteria. People should really rethink the idea that journals are superior to conferences.

There was a discussion about gender inclusion here. It seems still a long way to go in Finland. Only 10% of full profs in this university are female, even worse in sci and eng. We only had 1 female faculty member in CS last year and hired one this year.

Maybe it is important for him/her to know that he/she is not the only one who is struggling. I feel that it is hard to concentrate by working from home and it is hard to start a PhD during covid. Maybe just told him/her not to give him/herself too much pressure. It takes time.

Not too bad. It actually took me about 500 dollars for my visa to visit cmu for 6 months.
Also, it took me 400 Euros for the Finnish visa for 9 months.
My half a month PhD salary was spent on visas. :-(

One potential problem for using TA money instead of prof's funding is that students may feel that they do not belong to the group. Some students feel unsafe about their PhD if they need to be TAs for many semesters.
