What other company would have implemented hot staging so quickly just retrofitting an extra ring on an already built rocket? This is why SpaceX is where they are, they just...do it and see what happens. No one else dares to take such risks and it's really unfortunate

I'm actually happy that SpaceX tries new stuff that risks failure. Nobody has ever tried to intentionally fly a first stage after hot staging before in the history of rocketry, and that means they risked failures like the one we saw today with B9. New failures are new lessons.

@Unpop_Science "According to SpaceX, both Falcon 1 & 9 have failed more times than the space shuttle (2)." That's an extremely disingenuous statement. Falcon 1 has had 3 failures and Falcon 9 only 2: CRS-7 in 2015 and Amos-6 in 2016. If you count the missed landings you are simply dishonest.

To put this into perspective, as I usually do, $3+ billion is LESS than a single SLS/Orion launch. An entire launch complex, test vehicles etc for about one SLS/Orion launch with some change to spare. It's simply utterly insane how much of a waste of money SLS is.
