None of this is getting boring to me yet - not sure that's ever gonna happen. I do still love safe airplane take offs and landings too, and there are several billion of those a year. Go
@SpaceX
@elonmusk
@NASA
Well done!
Congrats
@elonmusk
- it is a privilege to know you these last two-decades & I thank you for advancing innovation & tech in ways that allow for a better future. More of my views on this will be covered in my book coming this spring! Can’t wait to see what is yet to come!
@SpaceX
For you engineers, would actively flight testing rockets in stages be more motivating than working 10-yrs for just one full up horizontal engine test before flight? As a matter of public policy, it seems foolhardy to spend $20B w/out more test flights & not sure it reduces risk.
When humans 1st step foot on Mars, it will most likely be a US/NASA led effort that includes a consortium of countries & private companies. The way to best assure this soonest is to reduce the cost through innovation, which is currently being led by
@SpaceX
@blueorigin
& others.
If we are able to accomplish the extraordinary goal of sending a person to Mars, I want the flag that will be flying on that planet to be the flag of the United States of America, not the flag of SpaceX or Blue Origin.
I didn't say this. I've asked for a correction. I write in the book that SpaceX is running faster than the competition & that it will be hard for others to catch up in the next decade unless Elon trips. The reporter asked what could trip him up & ego was a part of my response.
All this capability at a savings to the tax-payer of $20-30B -
@NASA
’s own estimate -compared to traditional approach. Oh, they also landed the 1st rocket stage on a robot ship, in the dark, in the middle of the ocean. Only a crazy person would have believed in this!
#callmecrazy
Fav Garver quote so far: "
@JeffBezos
is serious; he wouldn't - &, by the way, neither would
@elonmusk
-be in there if there wasn't money to be made. I love the 'I want to advance humanity & save the species,' but it's boys & their toys...Jeff will at least tell you that straight"
We will never forget the final Space Shuttle Columbia Crew. This is a sad season for the
@NASA
family and we honor our all of our fallen heroes.
#STS107
Congrats to the entire
@SpaceX
team. What a fun way to start the morning. Looking forward to s’more fun in a few hours w/
@BoeingSpace
&
@NASA
I love it when a plan comes together!
@SciGuySpace
I said in an exit interview from
@NASA
in 2013 that it was likely to slip a year or two from 2017, NASA put out a statement saying I was mistaken & Boeing said they were actually ahead of schedule.
"Back at home we all have a lot of work to do but from here, the Earth sure looks like a perfect world". When we 1st met,
@rookisaacman
asked if commercial space was developing faster or slower than I'd imagined 40 yrs ago. I said slower at first, but thanks to you - faster now!
Our book isn’t completed, but I’m pleased to announce my collaboration with Michael Sheetz & publish this preview of an important chapter in the decades-long quest to open access to space & save NASA!
I’ve never gotten to see a launch from the beach! I don’t know why these are known as the cheap seats! Better than VIP viewing & I don’t have to wear close-toed shoes ... or any shoes!
Friendly reminder that Congress cut commercial crew funding by more than 50% for the first 5 years! ($500M became $230M, $800M became $400M etc.) Meanwhile, SLS/Orion requests of $3-4B got $100M's added by Congress. Not all schedule slips should be created equal.
Total politicization of
@NASA
, Bob, Doug &
@SpaceX
. Did they want to be used in a Trump campaign ad? Are these FEC & Hatch Act violations? “We are Americans & the future belongs totally to us” Really? Space should be healing, not dividing!
Minds being blown across the aerospace industry! NASA team is doing a good job threading the needle about the transition from SLS/Orion to a more sustainable system, without being so blunt. Nevertheless, it is now up to
@SpaceX
to deliver. If they do, the writing is on the wall.
Congratulations
@SpaceX
@elonmusk
@NASA
I wouldn't have predicted this outcome! Upon reflection, it's the only selection that met the Hill's direction - lower funding than requested, & down selecting to one winner - hoisted on their own petard! Huzzah!
@NASAArtemis
@KathyLueders
For those interested, Kamala Harris just said in her acceptance speech at the DNC that “I will make sure that we lead the world into the future on space & artificial intelligence. That America, not China wins the competition for the 21st century.”
This interviewer asks questions such as: "How did
@SpaceX
&
@elonmusk
get such a huge lead?" "Time & time again, things came up that typically would take an organization weeks or months to work through that SpaceX could do in hours or days." via
@politico
I was told by a SpaceX VP at the launch that they offered free launches to NASA, Air Force etc. but got no takers. A student developed experiment or early tech demo could have led to even more new knowledge from the mission. The Tesla gimmick was the backup.
Such a privilege to be honored along with
@KathyLueders
at tonight's
@WomeninAero
awards banquet. Thank you to
@Pomerantz
& the
@owensfellowship
for nominating me & to all who have lit the path so more could follow. The future is bright!
I didn't write the headlines - I'd have suggested along the lines of: NASA Isn't about the Past, it is about the Future - but I'll let my - rather long - op-ed speak for itself. Bill Nelson Isn't the Best Choice for NASA Administrator via
@sciam
It was a pleasure an an honor to help. I was so sure this was the right path, that the Congress being against us was just another hurdle. Couldn't have happened without
@SpaceX
and so many others!
@SciGuySpace
@NASA
Thank you to
@Lori_Garver
for pursing Commercial Crew Program even if it was not received well by the Congress. I hope they recognize the similarities between CCP and HLS and realize the importance of commercialized lunar lander.
Love you, NASA! ❤️
So gratifying to see all the excitement & support for this upcoming human spaceflight launch! Being part of the team that got it started was an honor & the
@SpaceX
&
@NASA
teams making it happen are my heroes!
#godspeeddragon
T-minus 8 days until history is made.
@SpaceX
will be launching humans to space for the first time.
This is only the fifth time
@NASA
has used a new spacecraft in its 60 year history. And for many of us, the first time we have ever seen a new crew spacecraft launch
#CrewDragon
Whoa - we haven’t been on Mars more than 30 min &
@NASA
is already talking about gearing up the Mars helicopter Ingenuity! Take a breath & a victory lap team!
@NASAPersevere
playing some nice David Bowie - is there life on Mars?
@WordsmithFL
I'm rarely speechless, but blown away by this offer. I don't know about its legality, but offering $2B+ to develop a competitive lander can't be ignored. Sure, it is unconventional, but hasn't everyone (including Elon) been saying Jeff needs to take more of a personal interest?
Nice photo of
@Starshipprogram
hot staging. Congratulations to the entire
@SpaceX
team on an extremely successful test. Hard to be too critical of the 1st stage RUD on return, since that's the flight profile for all non-SpaceX rockets. Here's to pushing the envelope further!
Mike Collins was one of the all—time-greats. This shot is from Neil’s funeral in Ohio, but I’d know him over 20-years by then. Losing our heroes isn’t easy, but this loss is particularly hard. Godspeed my friend!
@AstroMCollins
Humans on ISS for 21 yrs was not pre-ordained. Unity had to wait for the Zarya module, which finally launched in Nov 1998. I came to the
@NASA
Halloween Costume Contest that year as Unity. My space policy twist - sponsored by Disney & Viagra (get it up & keep it up). Yes, I won!
The
@POTUS
'25
@NASA
budget of $25.38B is ~$2.5B less than projected last year. Along w/ congressional cut of $2.3B for 2024, the agency's growth trend is now reversed. Absorbing these reductions w/out cancelling major programs will cause delays across the board. Touch choices.
Docking complete! Congrats
@SpaceX
@NASA
@Commercial_Crew
Dragon made it to the space station in the same amount of time it took us to drive home to DC. I bet they had a better time! Enjoy your stay!
Be still my beating heart! More good news from Boca Chica! Congratulations to the
@SpaceXStarship
team on reaching a tremendous milestone! SN10 just went over 10 kilometers, returned to home base & stuck the landing! The accomplishments of
@SpaceX
@elonmusk
continue to overwhelm
Fun to hear
@nasa
naming Moon mission Artemis - sister of Apollo & the name I've promoted for decades (including in grad school). The
@nasa
bureaucrats wouldn't let me use the name for the asteroid mission because Artemis kills Orion in greek mythology... love it even more now!
This is outstanding news - congratulations to Kathy & the
@NASA
team! As I watched the recent press conferences on the launch - I thought - there is the next HEO AA!
Indeed - no one asked about that in the press conference, but this was the reality. Most in Congress & senior NASA leadership at the time wanted to down select to one provider - and it was Boeing. Times have changed.
@Lori_Garver
Remembering when certain members of Congress were trying to force NASA to select only one vendor (Boeing) for commercial crew. We'd still be hitchhiking out of Baikonur.
Straight talk on anti
@SpaceX
excuses: "Industry giants have criticized the company for "arrogance," but "the real reason was that it threatened their way of doing business and their livelihoods," Lori Garver, NASA's former deputy administrator, told AFP.
Go baby go - it is hard to put my feelings into words watching these fully commercial flights! Many years in the making & now just a happy supporter & spectator.
Appreciate the shout out on
@CNN
from
@milesobrien
about my role in advancing the
@Commercial_Crew
program. He mentioned the arrows I took in the process & I'd like to report that I've always been proud of my beautiful scars - today more than ever. Thanks to so many
@SpaceX
@NASA
1st time
@SpaceX

@Maddie_Kothe
& the women’s network 4 hosting my tour & talk - an honor!
Where are the arrests? How is it possible to say 10 yrs in prison for this behavior in Portland in July, but I love you & understand to those who vandalize our Capitol?
NASA picks SpaceX as the sole winner of the HLS program,
@wapodavenport
reports, beating teams led by Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and $LDOS' Dynetics.

1998 - I was Unity Module (Node 1), sponsored by Disney & a few others. Viagra was new on the market & I thought our goal was the same - "get it up & keep it up". Unity launched a month later & is still "up" - commercial space on the rise too!
"The Falcon 9 Heavy may some day come about. It’s on the drawing board right now. SLS is real." We knew it wasn't true then & a decade & $20B later, SLS still isn't real & FH is flying. Charlie Bolden says the quiet part out loud: SLS rocket will go away
The space community has been talking about replacing the RD-180s with a U.S. engine for decades. Congratulations to the Vulcan

convoy again in a few days?
Gotta find the charts that Boeing & the "three amigos" presented to
@NASA
in 2010, saying they could do SLS with $3B and 5 yrs. I said in 2013 that the program was likely to slip beyond 2017, but
@Boeing
Program Director said I was wrong, they were ahead of schedule.
#igiveup
Oh my goodness - this is very sweet Emily! You may have to wait a few more years, but I suppose time will tell. Either way - your support means everything to me.
Quick review of numbers
@NASA
requested $5.8B in ‘11 request for 5-yr runout & received $2.4B from Congress for those 5 yrs. NASA requested $11.2B for SLS/Orion & received $16.3B over same 5 yrs - in addition to ~$16 spent on CxP. More $ on Soyuz seats due to of these decisions.
Thank you so much for this recognition! Joining the esteemed group of past winners including Gerard O’Neill, Gene Roddenberry, Carl Sagan,
@PeterDiamandis
@TheRealBuzz
&
@elonmusk
is a huge honor. It appears I am the 1st woman to win the award, but I predict many will follow!

Lots of folks are concerned about the economy, & I'm sure
@POTUS
himself is at the top of the list. Sarcastically wishing
@elonmusk
"lots of luck on his trip to the moon" makes it appear he isn't concerned & is unaware this is a funded
@NASA
program.
@NASAArtemis
These are just the launches to (and returns from) the Cape. I had a lot of confidence that our policies were going to drive progress, but the success of
@SpaceX
is truly remarkable. Now let's get them some competition!
@NASAWatch
We need a meme that shows $40B in lost opportunity costs over the last 10-years. Money & time that could have been spent incentivizing competitive innovative human spaceflight capabilities & missions. Don't forget his cuts to commercial crew that led to delays & more $ to Russia.
Congratulations to NASA and SpaceX on today's launch. It’s a testament to the power of science and what we can accomplish by harnessing our innovation, ingenuity, and determination. I join all Americans and the people of Japan in wishing the astronauts Godspeed on their journey.
There are launches and then there are LAUNCHES!!! Hard to describe the blood, sweat and tears that got the
@PolarisProgram
crew to orbit today.
Pictured below are just a few of the

Much about this ad is disturbing & I’m sure seeing your family’s goodby being used in this way is especially difficult. I think it violates Federal Election Committee rules - so alerting them may get it taken down/removed.
Countdown to public release:
@neiltyson
says, "From presidents to heads of agencies to astronauts to key members of congress, she knew them all and they knew her — & they didn't always see eye to eye" - the rest made the front cover - thank you Neil!

Thanks Elon, I imagine the massive assault I have experienced pales by comparison to yours. I definitely did not intend to add to it! Both
@wapodavenport

new books outline our progress, how we got here & why it is important.
I’m not sure I had seen this photo before - thanks for sharing! He took a big chance on this program (we also took a big chance asking him to do that...) & it is starting to pay off! Congrats to the whole team!
I paid no attention to Trump at launch, but heard he said: “We have created the envy of the world & we’ll soon be landing on Mars & we’ll soon have the greatest weapons ever imagined in history. I’ve already seen designs & even I can’t believe it”. So
@NASA
is related to weapons?
The lack of awareness that women haven’t been to the the Moon is fascinating. I’ve been asked by girls in several student presentations if I’ve been to the Moon & always feel bad having to acknowledge no women have ever been there (& that I’ve never even been to space... yet!)
I know the Unity 22 crew will have a more stunning view tomorrow, but I’m enjoying the beautiful scene out my airplane window on the approach to El Paso. Sure beats the view from my sofa over the past 16 months!

killed Orion by accident after being tricked by Apollo into thinking the hunter was, in fact, a villain who had attacked one of her priestesses. To the Moon!
Being blamed by him & many others 4 "beginning a death march for human spaceflight...recklessly abandoning sound principles, a proven track record & steady path of success" for proposing commercial crew & opposing SLS was horribly ironic & nearly broke me
