Carers Allowance is a benefit that’s 50 years out of touch.
It’s simply not fit for purpose in 21st century.
How it’s administered and run isn’t fit for purpose.
We need investment in carers and investment in our carer benefits.
The
#Budget23
still leaves
#UnpaidCarers
with little ability but to give up work to look after family /friends.
Not fixing Social Care leaves many ending careers.
Not fixing Carers Allowance earning limit means carers can’t earn more than £132 week. This should have been done.
Benefits rise in line with inflation but not now, carers and our families have to wait until winter is over in April to see this rise.
This means carers allowance rises to £76.74 a week, if our maths right! It’s currently only £69.70
Carers face a very bleak winter indeed.

Carers allowance is now £81.90 a week
Eligibility rules are complex and designed to make you fail.
It’s no wonder carers fall foul of them.
Add to which DWP are not flagging quickly enough individuals who earn over earning threshold, then prosecuting them, it’s unforgivable
Those carers who do manage to get the pittance that is Carers Allowance are already caring 35+ hours a week. A system that ends up with over 25,000 carers having to repay due to overpayments which Govt IT systems apparently flag but haven't acted upon simply has to change (1)

Unpaid carers face acute financial hardship. The cost of living pressures have not gone away.
The Government must recognise the link between caring and poverty.
We’re so hoping the Chancellor heard

We’ve over 15k people who are hoping the same 👇
Half a million carers not claiming Carers Allowance.
Why? It’s eligibility rules and application forms.
You only have to see the current stories of carer overpayments to put you off claiming.
We’re campaigning for a reform of Carers Allowance and carers’ benefits. Carers Allowance is the lowest benefit of its kind. This General Election, we need all to recognise our value in a caring economy.
No carer should be in poverty because of a caring role.

Let’s not pitch working v. non-working, all of us can so easily move from 1 to other.

Truss ally:
'How can it be right that someone who gets up at 6am & works hard all day is seeing their pay go up by 5% or so and someone who is not working and is on benefits gets a 10% rise?'
They claim that it will increase incentives for people to get jobs and fill vacancies
This people need to be working rhetoric totally ignores
#UnpaidCarers
having to give up their own paid employment to look after loved ones. There is no alternative with current care crisis, pressure on NHS & government now asking us to take on more hours of care for loved ones.

Those on mean tested benefits like UC will be entitled to £650, targeting low income families. Yet again those on Carers Allowance have been missed off this support. Carers Allowance is the lowest benefit of its kind and well past it’s sell by date. We need meaningful reform.
