@WTUTeacher
members have overwhelmingly approved a new contract by a landslide vote! Out of the 3,000 members who voted, 2,880 (96%) voted for this new contract! Thank you, again, to the many individuals and organizations who supported us in getting this contract over the finish
Tonight our Representative Assembly voted on our endorsements and are proud to announce we are endorsing
@BernieSanders
for President. We strongly believe he will defend public education and educators across the country.
It is with deepest sorrow that we must confirm the passing of President Elizabeth Davis.
Please keep President Davis and her family in your prayers during this difficult time. Details on a celebration of her life will be forthcoming.
@WTU_Teacher
, Join us on Saturday for the Shared Vision Conference! Teachers learn & earn PLUs! Parent/community workshops offered on topics like school safety, SEL + activities for young children. Save Your Spot! Breakfast and lunch served to those who register via QR.

We have good news to share! Yesterday, we reached a tentative agreement with the district for the first time in three years! We’d like to thank our members and community across the city for your tireless support. We couldn’t have done it without you.
@wtu_teacher
, See Washington Post's article on the wait for repairs of DCPS schools. These repairs raise safety concerns and disrupt teaching and learning.

DC Teachers are willing to return to in-person learning, if health and safety concerns are addressed to ensure the health of our teachers, students and communities. In the meantime, we're committed to ensuring great virtual learning for our students.
We'd like to thank
@DCPSChancellor
for listening to principals, teachers and parents. We look forward to working with all stakeholders to develop a plan that better serves our students, especially those furthest from opportunity, and keeps our community safe.
DCPS will not open elementary schools on November 9 as planned. We have heard feedback from many in our community about
#ReopenStrong
plans, and we will use this moment to adjust our timeline and staffing plans for reopening. Read more:

Please join us in thanking our city's teachers for their work.
We hope you'll join us in honoring workers across our city & nation. Together we can build a more just society and expand jobs with fair protections and a living wage.
There’s no shortage of teachers. We’ve just driven them out of schools. ‘They’ve just had enough of the real shortage that is decaying their profession: respect, value, common sense and safety.’
@DCPSChancellor
We can confirm that
@SWWHSA

@WallsAtFrancis
Principal Trogisch was dismissed today.
We are working with our union partners, teachers, and parents on a response.
#Solidarity
We have asked
@DCPSChancellor
to cancel or make provisions for teachers to attend tomorrow's PD sessions remotely. During this public health crisis, we should take every precaution to ensure the health and safety of our employees & their families.
@dcpublicschools
In Ward 3, all DCPS schools have a full time librarian.
In Ward 6, 16 of 18 schools have full time librarians.
Of the 20 DCPS schools in Ward 8, 7 will not have a librarian on staff and an additional 4 will be part-time.

We stand with our colleagues in early care and childcare settings. We must all have access to the vaccine before broad reopenings that will expose thousands to this deadly disease.
#OnlyWhenItsSafe
The Bowser admin has said a short supply of vaccines has forced them to make tough decisions. Day care workers, who have largely been in- person for months, are pushing back on the DC’s decision to put school teacher and staff ahead in the vaccine line
We are so proud to endorse
@Janeese4DC
. We know that she is the candidate who can deliver a progressive vision for our students, families and educators in DC.
Only 25% of our students attend their neighborhood school. We must find a way to restore funding.
Then we must change policy so that we prioritize investments in our neighborhoods and their schools. A child's education cannot depend on a lottery and a bus pass.
Breaking:
#WMATA
is proposing some of the grimmest cuts in its 50-year history. If approved, service cutbacks starting July 2021 include:
- No weekend train service
- Trains every 30 mins on each line
- Close 19 stations
- Close at 9 p.m. instead of 11
The WTU sends our condolences to Mrs. White's family and the Ballou STAY community.
We are working to uncover the facts around her in-person placement and exposure. President Davis will have further comment once we know more.
To start off Teacher Appreciation Week, instead of rewarding our hard-working

We can replace lost learning. We cannot replace a lost loved one.
Though we are glad
@MayorBowser
is concerned about the city's persistent and growing (prior to COVID) learning gaps and we hope to see substantial and targeted investments in her next budget.
The Public Employees Relations Board (PERB) ruled that DC Public Schools (DCPS) violated the law by refusing to bargain with WTU regarding reopening planning and granted WTU’s renewed request for preliminary relief. Read our statement here:
⚡ The amendment passed! This year every DCPS student can have a librarian at their school to help them bounce back from the pandemic. Thanks to my colleagues and all the students, parents, educators, community members and

who made it clear that

The Washington Teachers’ Union (WTU) was made aware that teachers received “Return to In-Person Work Guidelines” from DCPS. The WTU support efforts to return to in-person learning but it must be done in a manner that protects the health of our teachers, students and communities.
The Washington Teachers’ Union is partnering with Fox 5 and its sister station, Fox 5 Plus (WDCA), to air lessons on television, starting Monday, March 30, for students who do not have access to laptops or Wi-Fi during school closures. via
@WTUTeacher
Guess who showed up from DCPS at WTU's 1st contract negotiation meeting yesterday? Lawyers. Not one person in ed from DCPS bothered to show up! Clearly, the mayor can invest 500 million in a capital arena but allocate no money or time to DC teachers.
#realsolutionsforkids
,
The Mayor forgot to mention two things she did not do in her push to reopen schools. (1) Bargain in good faith and not violate District Law. (2) Engage parents, teachers, and local school leaders.
Her plan would have disrupted learning for 44,000 kids.
#ReopenBetter
In 2020-21, all schools in the city’s wealthiest neighborhood had a full-time librarian. Half of schools in Wards 7 & 8 did not. More cuts are coming for 2021-2022.

Teachers, Parents and Community Members, we encourage you to sign-up to share your story and ask questions.
What specifically is DCPS doing to make our buildings safe?
How will we ensure stability and continuity for our students?

If it's not safe for Central Office, how is it safe for students? We demand data on the health of our school buildings and preparations being put in place to protect our students & school staff.
1. Invest in Technology for ALL students, not just 40%.
2. Include teachers in planning to develop plans to reopen schools for in-person learning.
#OnlyWhenItsSafe
Our thanks to
@CMRobertWhiteDC
for listening and demanding detailed info how we can safely reopen our schools.
We gave him over 200 questions submitted by community members to ask the Chancellor about their reopening plan.
We'd like to thank Senator
@BernieSanders
for raising this important issue. School closures are not accountability; they are a failure to invest in and support our students.
We are saddened and shocked that this could happen. We hope the Mayor and Council hold responsible parties fully accountable.
This is NOT how we treat our students and families.
Mayor Bowser and DCPS announced their plan to reopen schools on Oct 5. Those directly impacted should be allowed to speak before the Council on that plan.

This morning we’re dropping off our petition for a
#faircontractnow
at the Mayor’s office. Thank you to the parents and community members that signed in solidarity with us!
We put in the work & didn’t let up––and it paid off! In our agreement we won:
✔️12% salary increase over four years that includes all retros and 4% this year.
✔️An additional 4% signing bonus
✔️All benefits included & paid for
✔️A significant increase in administrative premium
WTU members work in DC and help these communities thrive. Yet, many cannot afford to live in the city. This is just one more reason we need a fair contract now!
Shoutout to our DCPS librarians at Back to School events in Ward 8 today! Including our very own General VP Regina Bell!
