It’s not a closely held secret how to improve attendance and student outcomes, there are several proven ways to do it. But there’s no way to do it that doesn’t depend on #TeacherRetention and a students feeling like they have adults at school that care about their success.

Finally, while DC is gaining on national peers in some areas, here is where we are on so called "achievement gaps": ▶️In 4th grade math the so called “achievement gap” between economically disadvantaged students and the rest of the population actually grew since 2000. ▶️In 9th grade math, the “achievement gap” between Black students and white students has actually grown ten points since 2000. And the same trend holds for Hispanic students. ▶️In 4th grade reading, where scores are stable since 2022, “achievement gaps” have barely budgeted in 24 years for Black students and students from economically disadvantaged families ▶️We HAVE made gains with Hispanic students.

Thank you to @CMBrookePinto and co-introducers for this very important and thoughtful legislation that will improve learning for young people, support their mental health, promote school safety and allow teachers to focus on quality instruction. @ChmnMendelson @CMFrumin @CMZParker5 @CMCharlesAllen @AnitaBondsDC @DCSBOE @WTUTeacher @DC_Edvocate @BenWilliamsDC @DMEforDC @OSSEDC
Today, I introduced a new bill to prohibit cell phones and personal wireless devices during the school day in order to remove digital distractions in the classroom and increase educational outcomes for District students. We must remain focused on supporting a learning environment in all of our schools that will help our students learn, play, engage, and thrive. Removing distracting devices during the school day will better equip our students to focus, empower our teachers to teach, and ensure that our kids are engaging with one another in person which will benefit them and their outcomes for years to come.

Chicago Public Schools has made their policies very clear, but @dcpublicschools has been thus far silent. We need a strong statement from @MayorBowser and @DCPSChancellor to defend dc public education - and we need it yesterday. @DMEforDC @ChmnMendelson @Janeese4DC @RobertWhite_DC @chenderson @charlesallen @BrianneKNadeau

Charter school teacher Rosalyn Lake on teacher retention: "The joy that I feel when I get to teach my students’ siblings is just out of this world because I already have a sense of who their primary adults are, what kind of struggles there might be at home, and more importantly there is an element of trust already built with that student and their families."

Charter school teacher Zellee Jones testifies asking SBOE to push the council to create a Teacher Retention Fund. She says a lack of substitutes makes it hard for teachers like her to take time off, even when sick. The retention fund could support flexible scheduling, perm subs, etc... @DC_Edvocate @BenWilliamsDC @BrandonBest @AllisterSBOE @Eboni_RoseDC @LaJoyLaw1 @HendersonW5SBOE
