We recently did an activity on academic socialization with my advocacy fellows. One’s academic socialization is how families and communities use their own educational beliefs & expectations to provide messaging to their children to help navigate & influence their academic success
Today I ran my first 10k at the
@CapHillClassic
(and I finished!)
It was so amazing seeing everyone support such a great cause!
(Next time I think I’ll start with a 3k instead, lol! )
@charlesallen
DC lost a giant today.
@ShanitaBurney
was far more than can be stated in a tweet! She was a community advocate, a friend to many, and most importantly a mother. You will be missed!
Congratulations to everyone who participated in this election season. It’s not easy running for office. It can be lonely, exhausting & painful at times. However, I want to acknowledge everyone who decided to try to make a difference. You are all to be celebrated today!
So thankful to reaching the age of 40! As I sit back to reflect on my 20’s & 30’s, I think about the advice I’d give the younger version of myself. This is what I came up with:
“If you’re a teacher, do right by your students because one day you’ll look up & your former kids will be
@brandonbestdc
on the State Board of Ed &
@RobertWhite_DC
on city council!”

Proud son moment:
For over 15 years, my mom and
@ERFSC
have provided Ward 7 residents with EITC & free tax services. It’s an honor to see her speak in front of the Mayor to share this information more broadly…
#theprototype
It was an honor to stand with charter families, staff and students today to urge for equitable funding of schools. It's my belief that all students and schools are deserving of having the resources necessary for our children to reach their full potential, regardless of sector!
(1/4) Yesterday I had an opportunity to speak with
@Ward6Wiley
. In this election, Josh & I were opponents, but our views were not always that far off. Joshua & his team ran an amazing campaign with our students, teachers & families at the heart of the conversation.
In our city, our ANCs put in long, thankless hours to help our city grow stronger. I think it's time to look at what a payment structure looks like for them...
I just want to take a moment to acknowledge how awesome this is! As kid born in the 80’s in Southeast DC, being covered in the
@HillRagDC
now as a candidate who wants to help fix the system that drove us out of the city is everything my mom dreamed of!
#mytruth
#anythingspossible
I’ve always wondered what an expansion of mental health services as a preventative measure would look like in our schools, not just as a result of crisis. I’m extremely excited to moderate this much needed convo on culturally responsive approaches to mental health in our schools
The holidays can be lonely, especially for ppl who don’t have family near by. If anyone is looking for a place to eat, relax or just hang out, I’ll have a few ppl over on Thanksgiving around 2!
DM me for details.
Another amazing event with
@DCSCORES
at Audi Field! I couldn’t even imagine being a child playing on the same field professionals play on! I love this kind of exposure for our students!
Today has been an awesome day for us at the
@DCSBOE
! We unanimously passed a resolution to approve our new Social Studies Standards! We also unanimously passed a resolution I introduced (Seizure Safe Schools) to ensure students with seizures are safe within our schools!
Excited to support my brother
@robertwhite_dc
in his re-election campaign for City Council.
It may look like a regular picture, but it represents over 25 years of friendship & growth of two DC classmates who have navigated more than you can imagine to lead in our city.
Our history & the erasure of it in our studies should not be politicized. I’m greatly disappointed in AP for stripping down the AP African American studies course.
Last night, I officially kicked off my campaign surrounded by the people I admire the most. Friends, family, and colleagues all came together with one purpose in mind, improving educational outcomes for our students in Ward 6 & in DC as a whole!
#bestforward6
Todays visit to Morehouse College was truly transformational! It shines a light on something I’ve said for a while, we need to set our school culture in our traditions & start to normalize excellence!
#Storyoftheday
so I’m sitting in an interview today w/ a potential new hire & I ask do you have any questions for me? The new hire replies, “Yes, how did you get
@BarackObama
to follow you on twitter?”
Me: President Obama follows me on twitter??? **looks on twitter**
Wow!
When I hear conversations about limiting the choice of families to choose the schools they wish their child to attend, this is what I see.
They will argue semantics all day. I’m NOT here for it.
I'm proud to announce the launch the
@KIPP_DC
Engagement Leaders Fellowship. This group of teachers will lead family engagement work at their respective schools while attending monthly PLCs to receive tools and strategies to support their work. Excited to see my team grow!
Excited to announce that
@DCSBOE
has unanimously passed the Seizure Safe Schools Resolution! This is an amazing first step to ensure staff are trained to recognize and respond to students if they suffer seizures at school. Let me share why this is important: 🧵 (1/3)
Happy Mother's Day to the most selfless and nurturing person I know. Thank you for your endless sacrifices and for always being a natural provider even during those times when it didn’t feel natural. I love you
#MothersDay
#MomLove
Such a full circle moment! My Middle School homie, DCPS colleague, and lifelong friend
@bholl05
spoke to the
@DCSBOE
to share updates on the My Brothers Keeper DC Action event on Dec 4th at the MLK Library… looking forward to supporting your work!
#lastmanstanding
My first job coming out of HS was at Jaspers in Largo MD… that $175 check was not fun. I can only imagine supporting a family with that. We can do better! We have to do better…
I’m supporting
@bttrrstrntsdc
I support tipped workers!
The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character–that is the goal of true education.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
I was pleased to meet with my constituent, 16-year old Oliver Tineo Coppola, and the Epilepsy Foundation today to discuss their advocacy efforts to make our schools safer for students with seizures.
@Ward6Wiley
(2/4) While we didn’t always agree on everything, one thing we both believe is we need to work together to build a better future for our children and our schools.
(1/3) Words can’t express what it means to have a friend & mentor like
@DC_Edvocate
. Over the past 4 years, we’ve worked hand and hand to ensure families & communities are always part of the conversation. I’ve seen your commitment to building antiracist systems in our schools.
Tonight
@DCSBOE
will be hearing from a panel on
#HealthySchoolFacilities
to gain insight on the current state of D.C. school buildings. We will get firsthand accounts from a student, a school custodian, and experts in the field. Tune in and comment at 5:30pm!
This was such an amazing moment. Being able to sit and speak with so many brilliant minds never gets old! I promise, we have some amazing things coming!
Thanks
@jessicasutterW6
for all the support!
I have so much faith in the future! A few days ago I was invited to speak with a few PreK students at Capitol Hill Day School… they ended up teaching me sooo much more than I could teach them. They reminded me that our youth can change the world!
Looking forward to going to the Hill tomorrow to advocate for the importance of investing in student mental health and keeping students safe from gun violence.
Earlier today I sent my budget priorities letter to
@MayorBowser
for consideration in the upcoming budget. It focuses on Mental Health, Teacher Wellness, Equitable Resources, Literacy Training & Student Safety. Read the letter in its entirety below.
So glad Warnock won, but the fact that over 1.6 mil people voted for Herschel Walker is troubling. Absolute party loyalty over the best interest of our country is a problem we need to address. It starts in our schools w/ critical thinking & teaching our young how to question info
I’m honored to receive the endorsement by the Washington Post. It’s imperative that we address educational equity in our city to ensure all schools, no matter what sector, have the resources they need to support our children.
Yesterday I had the privilege of being invited on a student led tour of
@RWPCSROXIE
in Ward 6. I was amazed and inspired by the school culture & students! After having really close conversations with these young men and women, I know they are prepared for the world! (Thread)
I’m dedicating this post to my former students, many of which are now Ward 6 parents! I remember sharing my music w/my classes (more on that after Nov.8) to show them it’s anything is possible & you don’t have to be a TV star to do what you love! This race is for them!
So inspired by our testimonies today! Financial Literacy, Green New Deal for Schools, Paternal Rights/Accommodations for young male parents, and the My Brother's Keeper Action Summit!
@DCSBOE
"No parent should receive a text, email, or call from a teacher that leaves them feeling overwhelmed, confused, or uninformed. Schools have a responsibility to communicate learning issues in real-time. It's my priority to make sure that happens." Jeanette Staton
(3/4) I’m grateful to the Ward 6 voters for providing me with an opportunity to represent you on our State Board. I’d like to thank all of the volunteers who contributed time, effort, donations, ideas and person-power to knock on doors, make phone calls or stand at poll sites.
Last stop of the night was filled with friends both new & old! Dancing with the scholars was better than I imagined! Caught up with
@DC_Edvocate
@jessicasutterW6
& ran into my HS classmate
@CMRobertWhiteDC
I guess I’ll have to lace up my dancing shoes next!
In today’s KIPP Codes, our participants are learning how to change directories, make directories, make folders, echo, test & print.

My favorite part of this race has been making connections with real ppl. It’s been an eye opening experience, something that needs to continue once the race is over! If elected I’ll follow the model, “this is what we heard, this is what we are thinking, what are your thoughts?”
Community walk with Principals at

I’m loving the intentionality from Principal Miller to partner with the feeder Elementary Schools
Dave had been asking for a sign for a few days now for The Point in SW. When I finally dropped it off, this was his response! lol

I believe in order to move things forward it starts with awareness. That's why I created the Mile in My Shoes initiative where I invited our city leaders including
@RobertWhite_DC
@charlesallen
to travel to and from school with our students to learn 1st hand the issues they face
Join
@DCSBOE
tomorrow at 6pm as we discuss how Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies will impact the future of education.
We know that AI will fundamentally change how we teach, but how much should it change what we teach as well?
RSVP:
Super excited to speak at
@EmpowerEdDC
's Teacher Voice Awards & Benefit tonight. To all of the teachers who use their voice to create positive change, I want to say thank you. You are the champions of education, the warriors of equity, and the architects of change!
Looking for a way to make an impact this holiday season? Considering giving to those less fortunate. I know that
@ACHSWashDC
has an annual food drive on the 19th & 20th.
Please add to this thread of food banks or schools that are giving this holiday season!
Truly a pleasure to have
@karen_mapp
@JosephineDC
&
@MMartinCadogan
present to our staff here at
@KIPP_DC
on the importance of engaging families! I look forward to the continued growth & development of our staff as we further our engagement practices!!!
Juneteenth 🧵: It’s disheartening to witness attempts to whitewash history, as we've seen in places like Florida, where social studies standards are being altered to downplay the true impact of slavery and the ongoing struggle for civil rights. (1)
We’ve been making our rounds across town to take down our signs. In an effort to get them all we may miss a few. To my friends, if you happen to walk past one, or see one in your neighborhood that we haven’t reached yet, can you help us and take it down? Thanks!
Last week
@ERFSC
aired its Voices of Ward 7 Podcast w/
@EbbonAllen
They facilitated a rich conversation that touched on so many issues impacting our communities.
It’s been a blessing to work w/my mom
@msmhenb
to highlight everyday people doing extraordinary work!
Today, I had the pleasure of leading a workshop on Family & Community Engagement at the 2022 DC CTE Conference.
There’s no better feeling than working with DC educators & leaders to strengthen our ties to the families and communities we serve.
In light of Black History Month, I want to remind everyone that Black History is American History… Just like slavery & Jim Crow isn’t Black History, it’s the history of prejudice & race relations in American. It’s just as much white history as it is black history.
@AlisonHornDC
I appreciate this conversation, it’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot. As a black DC Native, there have been a number of progressives who have attempted to shut me out of the conversation even though my track record shows I align w/most of their ideas.
With the election just a few weeks out, there are still some people who are unsure of who they want to vote for in the
@DCSBOE
race. I hope this will help!
#bestforward6
I want to explore developing academic standards around AI. Instead of being afraid of what will come, we need to embrace it & prepare our students for tomorrow.
This could look like “AI class” similar to the typing classes we used to take or infusing AI prompting into curriculum
Happy Father's Day. Today, let's remember the powerful role you play in guiding our children and shaping their future. Our kids and the safety of our city depend on our love, support, and guidance. Embrace this opportunity to be a strong, positive influence in their lives.
