If no action is taken now, drug resistance could cause over cumulative global GDP loss of US$ 950 billion between 2025 and 2050 due to antimicrobial resistance's impact on livestock, while the spread of resistant pathogens from livestock to humans, could cost up to US$ 5.2
Wildlife is often blamed for disease emergence when they are also victims. Human activity is actually one of the key drivers of the rise of emerging diseases. Wildlife health matters - it contributes to

I was delighted to discuss joint work with him & the country in building & implementing future

This year we are proposing a new format for the
@WOAH
General Session: to provide more time for dialogue & foster interactive exchanges, we've organised an Animal Health Forum on
#avianinfluenza
where gov representatives, veterinary officials & partners will find joint solutions.
I am honoured to lead such a distinguished organisation and look forward to working with our dedicated team, network, and global partners to advance animal health and welfare worldwide.
@WOAH
#OneHealth

Health Ministers’ meeting as it's further proof of our unwavering commitment to build One Health & leave no sector behind.
#G20Italy
This is a momentous year for
@WOAH
as it assumes the Chair of the Quadripartite Secretariat. Our partnership in the
#Quadripartite
has flourished. I am confident that by working together, we can iron out challenges and capitalise on opportunities for positive & sustained change.
This week, I'm at the Quadripartite Executive Annual Meeting (QEAM) in Nairobi. The Quadripartite,
@WOAH
,
@FAO
,
@WHO
&
@UNEP
has gathered to discuss how it can further enhance its policy impact and mobilise sustainable resources to support
#OneHealth
implementation at all levels.
#OneHealth
remains at the core of our efforts to tackle issues such as
#AntiMicrobialResistance
. As veterinarians, we're strongly involved in public health issues. But it's also a fact that the animal health sector has its own intent to keep
#antimicrobials
effective for animals.
In light of reinforcing our efforts to prevent, prepare & respond to pandemics, let's not forget to highlight the aspect of prevention. We know that a number of pathogens stem from animals, & so it's key that proper investment is directed to the
#animalhealth
sector.
#WOHC2022
#EmergencyManagement
is possible only through strong multi-sectoral partnerships, which consider all hazards and different national/regional situations.
We're working with
@INTERPOL_CBRNE
&
@FAO
to build resilience against agro-crime & agro-terrorism using a
#OneHealth
approach.
Emerging diseases can come from numerous factors such as urban expansion, human encroachment into previously isolated wildlife habitats and of course
#climatechange
.
All these increase the risk of disease spillovers between humans and animals.

#Antimicrobial

After much waiting, the World Animal Health Information System (OIE-WAHIS) is finally here!
Diseases can be prevented through preparedness, such as timely reporting. Thanks to all those who made development of the platform possible to improve animal disease reporting capacity.
Food shortages cause social unrest, civil conflicts, & malnutrition.
OIE-WAHIS supports animal production systems to maintain food security, livelihoods, & a stable economy. 👨🌾 🐷 🐮 🐣 👩🌾

It's clear that tackling

can't be done by one sector alone. I call on leaders, decision-makers & experts at the 3rd Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on AMR in

Preparedness is crucial if we want to prevent future pandemics like
#COVID19
from impacting global health.
We’re at a race against time - we must work together & fast to develop an efficient surveillance system for wildlife health & regulate wildlife trade.
It’s time to stop neglecting wildlife health!
Most diseases stem from unregulated human practices on ecosystems.
Being prepared, such as through behaviour-change & the regular monitoring of wild animals, prevents the impacts of diseases on a global scale.
#OneHealth
We're interconnected - animals, humans, the environment - policies to prevent health threats must be implemented considering this link.

Yet another example of how cross-sectorial collaboration is key in tackling one of the pressing health threats we’re facing today, specifically
#AntiMicrobialResistance
.
#OneHealth
is key & I reiterate, as long as one sector isn’t safe from such threats, all sectors are at risk.
Federal animal health authorities are working with a private veterinary services company to analyze the impact of antimicrobial administration on antimicrobial resistance in pigs at client farms.
I had a fruitful exchange with

#OneHealth

In light of using the
#OneHealth
approach to tackle AMR, it's crucial that resources & leadership are distributed equally among all sectors. It's unfortunate that despite the growing threats of
#AMR
in the livestock & aquaculture sector, they are one of the least considered.
Today, I had the pleasure of meeting Ambassador Sarquis JB Sarquis, Brazil's new delegate for the international economic organisations, in Paris. As one of the 28 founding members of
@WOAH
in 1924, Brazil, which holds the G20 Presidency, is a key partner of the Organisation.
While current data suggests animals are less susceptible to
#COVID19
and its variants, surveillance efforts must continue. All findings in the
#animalhealth
sector must be shared with human and environmental health counterparts so we can address health threats holistically.
Everyone involved in the food chain has a role to play in responsibly using
#antimicrobials
to protect food security, & therefore global & planetary health. Vet professionals, farmers, governments & more, we call on you to engage all our resources to fight
#AMR
.
I’m very glad to know that all over the world, the
#OneHealth
approach continues to gain traction & continues to be used in not just addressing
#COVID19
, but in preventing future pandemics. A great initiative by the
@EndingPandemics
group!
During our time in

, I also had the opportunity to speak with the University of Arab Emirates College of Veterinary Medicine's dean (
@CAVM_UAEU
), Dr Arvee Lee Willingham, and its students, about the role of
@OIEAnimalHealth
International Standards in their education.
#AntimicrobialResistance
(AMR) is a multi-sectoral pandemic, less visible than
#COVID19
, but not less threatening. We’re calling on countries to reach
#AMR
Global Action Plan targets & consider that some sectors may require additional resources to build their capacities.
