there's a grocery store across the street from my apartment and I usually buy things the day I'm going to cook. Sometimes I walk to the butcher, baker, or green grocer, 3-5 blocks away. Extremely pleasant way to live

Sprawl also plays a role. I'm a millenial from an old inner-ring suburb with the kind of free-range childhood you hear about from previous generations, when I go back I see kids out and about. My peers from newer suburbs were not allowed to roam because the traffic is dangerous
