The place I used to live was a pretty rough estate with a lot of poverty and crime, and kids would be kicked out of the flats every day in all weather and roam round with nowhere to go. Except the library. You'd often see loads of kids in there, safe and warm.
Protect libraries.
Him saying that he never wanted to make a show "for queer people" but instead to make something "mainstream" tells me everything I need to know.
I wish he'd said this before instead of implying the opposite, but I guess he needed all our queer $

@fedyth_
This is. So adorable 🥹
Zeff finds out how to say "son" in Sanji's native language. The first time he says he, all nonchalantly like it's no big deal, Sanji drops the plate he's holding.
"S1 had violence!" Yeah but it was cartoony lego movie violence that was often offscreen. Skin him with the snail fork is equivalent to I'm gonna cut your heart out with a spoon.
In S2 the violence isn't funny or silly, it's played grim and onscreen.
Does anyone else feel like it's weird how much we were lied to by the show's creators? From no peg legs to no bury your gays to kindness to love triangle to satisfying ending..?
#ofmds2spoilers
If people don't understand why we're latching on quite so hard to the "father figure" thing it might be helpful if I explain that there's a time honoured tradition of media hinting at queer relationships then claiming at the last minute that they're familial.
#ofmds2spoilers
So Izzy’s a father figure but he's a jilted lover and his arc is finished and he had to die because they're pirates but there's no OFMD without him and... wait, hold on, let me start again I got confused.
#OFMDs2spoilers
The five stages of grief, OFMD S2 version.
Denial: "Actually S2 was really good, it's just TOO CLEVER for you lot to understand/really it's from Ed's POV/only supposed to be taken lightly/all the studio's fault."
"Morning, dad!"
"Morning, son. Just here to say I'm glad to hear you got well and truly docked by your boyfriend last night."
"Lol good one. Don't worry Stede, dad's just jealous."
Normal father/son stuff apparently, according to djenks 🤷♂️
#ofmds2spoilers
"It's all intentional, it's not meant to depict a happy ending for Ed and Stede’s relationship because their story isn't over, they'll fix it in the third season!"
Meanwhile Taika:
Lol someone wrote a fic where Ed feeds Stede one of his toes and the usual suspects are up in arms about how Ed would N E V E R and omg you're writing him as a domestic abuser.
If it's a silly romcom like S1 then we judge it by silly romcom standards. But when we say that the S2 graphic violence/death/mutilation/suicide/rape jokes are out of place for a romcom and the episodes aren't funny, we get told oh but it's a pirate show, it's not a romcom.
A GB friend who disliked Izzy reached out to me to ask how I'm doing, saying "I feel dumb that I've been duped by a showrunner yet again" and that "I can't even feel anything properly for Ed and Stede, it's too overshadowed" and somehow this is healing my bitter little heart.
Can't get over people mocking fans who put their heart and soul into promoting this show when the studio itself wouldn't and the cast couldn't due to the strikes, for "caring too much" about the characters.
Like, you do know that the creators WANT people to love the show?
I want to write a story where Val is Izzy’s twin sister. She comes to visit, sees everything that's been going down with regards to her little brother (18 minutes younger) and smacks some heads together.
If Val were to set foot on that fucking ship, she would fix Izzy's issues, Ed and Stede's issues, would reassure the crew. And fix the ship.
In two hours.
DJenks isn't Stede, he's Black Pete. Pure making shit up.
"So you’re saying that Izzy... is like a father figure to Blackbeard??"
"When he needs him to be."
I know that many of us know this from horrendous experience, but.
If a man was physically abusive to his previous partner, you'd be a fool to think he's not going to end up abusing YOU because you're special and different.
"It might hurt the creator's feelings to hear that people who loved the show so much they spent months creating a campaign for its renewal now feel betrayed and lied to" well you know what? Good. It should.
No you don't understand, size difference as a trope is about a tiny man and his great big hulking manwife who wears pretty dresses and calls him sir and this is about Izzy and Steak Knife
The way people are being so cruel to perls is sick. If you think you haven't seen the nastiness that Izzy fans receive on here then just take a look at the quotes and let it sink in.
Also interesting that I've had multiple people message me today saying they won't ever be this invested in a piece of media again because they won't let themselves trust it to not let them down.
I mean if someone said that about something I'd made, I'd be pretty devastated.
"It’s just a silly pirate show it doesn't have to be about good disability rep"
Okay but when an abuse victim has a limb amputated then tries to kill themself onscreen I think we expect that to either be handled in a way that's not offensive or left out of the silly pirate show.
People saying we're idiots for not expecting the queer disabled DV victim suicide survivor to be killed off because "it's a pirate show" - were we watching the same S1? Did you not see all the promo where DJ said this show was kind & S2 would have a happy ending?

@fedyth_
He has to step outside for a moment and take some deep breaths. Zeff comes out after a while and gruffly starts apologising - he thinks Sanji was offended by it.
Sanji ducks his head and hugs Zeff quick and hard before he can talk himself out of it.
Honestly if they'd let Daddy and Papi loose with a phone camera they'd have made a better S2 than what we got, by a LONG way. Look me in the eye and say I'm wrong.
I really think Jackie and Stede could have bonded over their incredible sense of style and love for over the top statement outfits (and pretty, dangerous men) and the fact that they never got to go clothes shopping together is basically a hate crime.
Also when I say that the way Izzy talks is normal for who he is and where he comes from, and that he wouldn't be considered an exceptionally rude or confrontational person by those standards, this is what I'm talking about.
GB fans wondering why anyone would like other characters in this show they supposedly love... like babe, if you love the show so much why are you angry about people liking characters from it? I'm so confused.
I know I've said this many times, but believing that a man with a history of violence and abuse would never harm *you*, his new partner, because *you* are his special one true love and that bitch he was with before is really the one to blame for provoking him, is a big mistake.
I wonder if they know how it sounds to suggest that an abuser wouldn't abuse new partner because new partner is Different and Special, unlike the previous partner who was bad and asking for it.
When you've been through something traumatic you come to learn that, after a surprisingly short time, people would really like you to just shut up about being traumatised and stop bringing the mood down.
I think that attitude being condoned in S2 was one of the nastiest things.
Do you ever remember how Stede hired an artist to follow him round making kinda bitchy commentary on everything he does and just think... yeah he missed Mary.
It's fascinating to me that people don't like CJ's dirtbag behaviour and so claim that Ed would never have slept with him.
Because that's essentially Stede’s reaction. And the core of a lot of their issues.
Stede only likes, or even acknowledges, the palatable parts of Ed.
"Why are you in the fandom if you don't like the main canon couple" oh you sweet summer children, I've been in fandoms where I didn't even like the SHOW, where watching even one episode made me cringe, where the source material was objectively terrible and problematic.
I think this was one of the things that felt most shocking, looking back. Because we're supposed to believe that Izzy is Ed’s oldest friend and "only family" and he's been taking care of Ed and his mess "all my life" but Ed doesn't even name him in the gravy basket.
I keep coming back to how Izzy hated Stede but instead of maiming him in the night he challenged him to a duel and gave him a sword to make sure he was armed and said "loser leaves the ship" and "do you yield" & only stabbed him when he refused those options.
Remember when Izzy said “Ed the crew are exhausted, I’m worried about you, I have love for you.” And then Ed shot his leg off and Izzy went “serves me right.”… just what psychological horrors are you going through to think that’s the logical conclusion to that?!?!?
The people. Who scolded us for caring too much about Izzy dying. Because it's just a comedy pirate show damn it's not that deep just stop watching if you don't like it. Are now getting annoyed that others find their response to the cancelation A Bit Much.
I'm just.
WILD to me that there are people saying "it's not DV, all the DV survivors saying it is are WRONG"
If they didn't want to invoke DV in their portrayal of Ed's behaviour this season then they did a really terrible job of that, because it sure seems a lot of us saw it.
#ofmd2
I don't think any of you understand what the size difference between Kristian and Con does to me. Like I want to pick this picture up in my teeth and shake it around while growling like a territorial dog.
The fact I had to read the take "I don't believe Izzy was ever suicidal" with my own two eyes is proof the writers fucked up BIG TIME with their handling of suicidality as a theme and it makes me angry
Why are we surprised that a show about pirates has main character death? Is it because we were explicitly told by the creator & others involved that it wouldn't happen? And that this is a light hearted show w/a happy ending that didn't care too much about the real history? 🤔
Maaaybe don't make a "romcom" with extremely graphic onscreen DV and suicide baiting if you're not going to write about those things well. Especially if your big selling point of your show is that it's "kind".
#ofmds2spoilers
@CaineYouSeeMe
It's wild though, because it was a deliberate choice on their part to frame it as intimate partner violence.
"We think you're in an unhealthy relationship with Blackbeard."
It was intentionally framed as domestic violence.
They made their romantic lead a domestic abuser. Why??
That moment in S1 where Jack kills Karl and Stede summons all his authority and says "Get off my ship." Because making Stede uncomfortable is one thing, but harming his crew is NEVER okay no matter who you're friends with.
That's what I was looking for from him in S2.
In S1 the most moving death was the death of a literal seagull. And we were told S2 would have a happier ending than S1. So I think it's not unreasonable to be surprised that the end shot of S2 was of suicidal disabled queer survivor's grave, after him being murdered onscreen.
Many disabled people have lower life expectancies, including those with no actually life-shortening health problems eg intellectual disability.
Saying that our funerals are good bonding life events for our families is so fucked up I don't even know what to say.
did DJ really justify killing Izzy by saying funerals strengthen families? Like, for one, thanks for letting us know we're fodder for that particularly pedantic narrative but are you fucking on crack? The entire first 3 episodes were a funeral. I wish I had the brazen audacity
Like seriously, how much do we think it cost for them to show Zheng's fleet transporting their ships over land for like 10 seconds only to have all the ships blow up in the end anyway. What was even the point of that? It would have made 0 difference to the plot to not have it.
People who literally mocked the fans who set up the renewal campaign for OFMD now turning around and saying it's their fault if S3 doesn't happen?
I THINK THE FUCK NOT, BABES.
Can't get over people mocking fans who put their heart and soul into promoting this show when the studio itself wouldn't and the cast couldn't due to the strikes, for "caring too much" about the characters.
Like, you do know that the creators WANT people to love the show?
I know I'm a basic bitch but one of my very favourite steddyhands flavours is Ed and Izzy have been married for years and Stede didn't realise he was the other woman until he finds out, and the knowledge reframes everything he thought about Izzy.
I swear to god, this fandom is shortening my life.
OFMD is a show created by a straight guy, and the main characters are both played by straight men. Please can we all just stop.
"Oh so you think [showrunner] HATES disabled people? You think he SPITS at them in the STREET?"
No babe. I think that, like most ableism, the issues we see in the show (not just with one character) come from a place of ignorance and privilege.
Depression: "My favourite show is over/I just can't feel engaged enough to make art or fic/pillars of the fandom are being bullied/some of my friends are mocking DV survivors and disabled people/it was supposed to be kind."
Anger: "What the fuck did I just watch/this shit is genuinely ableist/they ruined all my favourite characters in one season/WHY WOULD YOU CALL THIS A HAPPY ENDING/holy shit DJ stop talking."
I am STILL seeing people say that the problems with S2 are all due to budget, and seriously? Come the fuck on. More money doesn't fix bad writing. If there was too much plot to fit in 8 eps they should have taken some out or changed it. That's the writers' JOB.
#ofmds2spoilers
His smug self congratulatory bullshit in the face of all the hurt people who trusted him is so offputting that it makes me actively dislike the show even more.
Bargaining: "It's a 3 season arc, they'll fix it in S3/it was always a dark show (and other S1 denial)/what if all this is a dream?/Buttons is a SEAGULL WITCH now he will fix the bad writing!"
So then we say right okay, well if it's NOT a romcom but a proper pirate show, then let's point out all the plot holes and problems.
Then they say stop taking it so seriously, it's just a romcom.
Kinda just seems like they want us to shut up.
Disabled people: "We have issues with this season."
DV survivors: "Us too."
Fans who have supported the show through thick and thin: "Yeah, we are also feeling lied to."
David Jenkins:
Seeing people say the vibes are really good right now in the fandom is wild to me, like we really do exist on completely different decks of this cursed ship don't we.
Like, I don't know how they thought people would still be invested in the romantic storyline after this.
And yet PEOPLE STILL ARE invested, and satisfied with how it turned out! DJ himself says that if there's no S3, this is a satisfying and happy ending 🤯
@CaineYouSeeMe
It's wild though, because it was a deliberate choice on their part to frame it as intimate partner violence.
"We think you're in an unhealthy relationship with Blackbeard."
It was intentionally framed as domestic violence.
They made their romantic lead a domestic abuser. Why??
It's a romcom when they want us to not take it seriously. A serious pirate show when they want us to not complain about the dead disabled characters or onscreen suicide attempts.
Schrodinger's romcom?
Also I will just never be over him replying to a question about how Izzy’s death was really upsetting by saying it was "important not to end [S2] in a dour way" cos queer characters often end up "punished for it and it ends up tragic or unrequited."
#ofmds2spoilers
I was taken aback by how many were saying "people are ATTACKING Dvid Jenkns" and when you dug deeper the "attacks" were people saying things he'd written and said were ableist.
"They're literally calling him ableist!" As if that’s a mean thing you call someone you don't like.
@pepperbbl
At MCM I was in the queue for Rhys and someone said "...and they say it's ableist!" and I thought it was fascinating that they assumed no disabled people were around to hear them.
