My mother-in-law is originally from Gurannebraher but has been happily living near the Lough for 62 years. She recently started going to an old folks club in Ballyphehane: when I asked her how she was getting on she said 'They're grand but they're all very Southsidey"

In a Cork chipper Cork yesterday a very disheveled homeless person came in, skipped the queue and gave a very complicated order. Nobody minded, people just made room for her. When it was ready a guy quietly offered to pay for her food but someone had beaten him to it. Nice to see
In response to the

somebody suggests slightly reducing car dependency and is immediately greeted with:
"HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO BRING AN ANVIL FROM KILLYBEGS TO ADRIGOLE ON A BLOODY PUSHBIKE!!"
Cork's Marina, one of the best views of the river. It's hard to believe the City Council are going to build a vehicle bridge across here, it's frankly insane.
Docklands should be car-free.
Future generations will scratch their heads at the persistence of 70s thinking in Cork
We dont have to look to mainland Europe to find cities that work: this is Waterford, today, Christmas in full swing and the city centre packed with families. Whats missing? Cars.
Are we agreed that turnip-carving is about as authentic as Darby O'Gill? I'm almost 60 and never saw it or even heard of it. We had barm bracks, apple bobbing, masks etc but our turnips were left unmolested
I have a rack pack on my bike so I'm usually able to transport shopping easily enough. Today however I bought a personal flotation device (pdf) in Cork city but couldn't manage to fit it anywhere, so I wore it home. People must have thought I was the most pessimistic cyclist ever
Could we stop linking racism with working-class people? Shandon St in Cork is the heart of a large working class area, it's been home to newcomers of all races for decades without an ounce of trouble. The street is more vibrant than ever, full of life and noise.
There's a video claiming to show a riot/ramming of a shop in Cork last Friday evening, some versions claim immigrants were involved. It's actually from London:I was in Cork at that time and absolutely nothing happened.This stuff just promotes fear and racism.Don't share it

People pretending that turf is still harvested by families heading off with their sleans and loys, a bottle of cold tea in the overcoat pocket and a song in their hearts.
Reality:
Note to those criticising the vaccine programme: you can't roll-out what you don't have.
It's like the whole country has turned into an IT Project Manager
What a monstrosity. Ford closed their factory in Cork in 1984 laying off thousands of men in the height of a recession. Cork owes that brand nothing. Enough of the cringe.
A cycle lane from Cork City to Blarney would open up a huge commuting catchment area, as well as creating opportunities for tourism. This is all now part of the expanded city, it's time to genuinely "reimagine" Cork
The Wolfe Tones ended up drawing one of
@epfestival
’s largest ever crowds today! 👀🇮🇪
Crowds of up to 50-people deep gathered outside the Electric Arena tent at EP, with many festival go’ers bemoaning the decision not to book them to the main stage.

When I was a kid this Cork building was briefly the HQ of a Mao - affiliated Communist Party. On our way home from school we'd see people outside, kneeling in the rain saying the Rosary. It seemed perfectly normal. The past is a different country, a very brainwashed one.
No room for a buggy or a wheelchair, in an area with a lot of elderly people and young families. We talk about Rebel Cork and the fighting Irish yet we let bullies like this do whatever they please. Time to fight back.
I wonder if those Cork developers who insisted on building on flood plains are watching this from their villas in the Algarve? Probably chuckling into their pina coladas
Update from Glanmire as the flooding is severe around the Copper Valley Heights Estate.
Please avoid any areas that are affected by flooding around Cork and keep safe on the roads.

My father in law was telling me about the practice of "kicking in doors" in 50s/60s Cork City. There were so many abandoned houses that sometimes newly married couples would pick one, kick the door down and move in. If the owner (usually an emigrant) turned up they'd move on
The mill cottages houses were demolished in the last few days, despite this 'great news' from last September. The only thing that moves fast in Cork is the wrecking ball.
Of the hundreds of derelict buildings in Cork this one in Blarney St/Sundays Well really saddens me: it was a cosy local pub for generations, is near the city centre and is a key part of the Northside skyline. It would make a great set of apartments
Driving through a gang of bowlers on a lonely Cork road is as close to Deliverance as I ever want to get.
I wonder do they practice that stare in the mirror?
It's not a great day for a ramble but if you fancy a stroll in Cork City's Northside, try to find these 3 steam vents for the Cork Railway Tunnel.
One is on the side of a busy road, one in a quiet estate and one on private property but visible from a laneway
Just passed through the massive roadworks at Dunkettle Junction. The huge waste of money is maddening, all to knock a few seconds off a car trip to Dublin. We should be making driving less attractive to create demand for world class public transport, not investing in the past
@ChrisMoodyDraws
That looks like the end of the wildlife along that stretch of river. What a disgrace. Our public reps are touting this as "good news".
Lets cancel whatever plans are in place for Kennedy Quay and make it a riverside park, keep the old silo as a viewing platform with climbing walls up the side, and turn the Odlums building into an event centre. We have enough glass boxes
If you're due a 2nd vaccine this week but havent got a text, check your account in the HSE portal: mine updated this morning to show "2nd appointment scheduled". I got no text but the details are on the site, under "View Details". It's happened a few people I know (late 50s)
@rtenews
We forget how close we came to losing all of our Coillte woodlands when Bertie was working with an international logging company to take over the lot at fire-sale prices. We need to lock these in to make sure we never lose them.
People might find it hard to believe but nobody routinely parked on footpaths up to a few years back. I once got a ticket on a work van because one wheel was 2 inches onto the kerb. For some reason we've allowed thoughtless drivers to take over every inch of public space.
How can any young person vote Sinn fein with this carry on? Plus their opposition to every action to combat climate change.
They must be riddled with splinters from trying to sit on every fence.
I was delighted to address this evening’s Imagine Dundrum public meeting on the proposed Dundrum Village Strategic Housing Development where I outlined Sinn Féin’s concerns regarding the proposed development.
One of Cork's locked laneways: there's been a loss of quiet walking routes around the the old parts of the city, forcing older people and kids to stick with the noisier, busier main routes. This is in Blackpool.
Just cancelled my Irish Times subscription. They hardly need my 16 euro per month if they're going to be a platform for millionaires who want to cull the herd of the vulnerable and old

A rarely seen Brocken Spectre in the Galtees today: it happens when you stand on a ridge and the sun casts your shadow on low cloud. Had a great day in the hills
This meeting was amicable but the message was depressingly regressive. The traders want to block

bus gatesand bike lanes, keep parking spaces and concrete over the River Bride, all under cover of promoting a Greenway. Greenwashing at its worst.
Some people are objecting to the brilliant Púca sculpture because it's pagan(local priest) or it might frighete the local children.
I grew up with this outside my front door, a poor chap bleeding to death, nailed to a plank of wood with his mother and aunties looking up at him.
Cork's Rio Grande:
This is the proposed network of bike lanes for Cork City in the Cork City Plan, 2017, it's well thought out and based on surveys and realistic estimates of usage

The first result in a search for the meaning of the word commemorate:
"to remember officially and give respect to a great person or event, especially by a public ceremony..."

The EU accepted the backstop as a compromise, the alternative to having NI in the Customs Union. No viable alternative has been proposed to the current backstop.
Fair play to
@corkcitycouncil
for their radical plans for pedestrianisation and cycling in Blackpool, some of us had nearly given up hope.
Make William O'Brien Street great again!
Nearly blown off the bike on the Commons Road/N20 at lunchtime. White van, an empty outer lane racing towards a red light. The backwash was so strong i hit the kerb, if a car had been behind me I'd have been dead.
It's no wonder I'm the only fool cycling around here.
I love walking around Youghal after dark, the streets are quiet and you can really appreciate some of the buildings. There's still dereliction but it's great to see so many old houses being fixed up
It feels like the environmental movement is failing to connect: called to a relative earlier, their 3 kids were making posters protesting the bike lane in Ballyphehane. A friend who cycled to work for 30 years sent this pic. How do we connect?
A gentle reminder that despite the welcome improvements in cycling infrastructure in Cork, there is still only 80 metres of protected bike lane in the entire Northside.Conditions are so bad in Blackpool/Shandon area that it is effectivly a no-bike zone. Shame on
@corkcitycouncil
As I was squeezing along the shoulder-width bike lane on the Carrigrohane Rd earlier it struck me that there are 10 traffic lanes for cars moving between Ballincollig & City Centre: N40, Straight Rd, Model Farm Rd, Lee Rd. Surely one of these could be made active travel priority?

There was no state created for Catholics. The War of Independence was fought for the freedom of the entire island and its population, as represented in the flag.
If I proposed a cycle lane on Blarney St we'd have years of consultation and eventually the idea would be dropped: yet we destroyed a community by giving the street to speeding drivers and now the entire footpath to parked cars without a moments discussion
We all tested positive after 2 outings last weekend (first ones in months).
We're cooped up but together, well fed and watered. It will pass. Greetings to all the others hibernating out there
@ColinBrazierTV
Dresden? Coventry? Mariupol?
No. This is Cork City in 1922, after it had been burned by British Forces as a reprisal during the Irish War of Independence.
@KeithMillsD7
I'd support Road Tax based on wear and tear on roads due to the weight of the vehicle, including scooters and bikes, e.g. 10 euro /year with lower rates for commercials
My bike weights 12kg so I'd pay 120 /year.
A private Land Rover Defender driver would pay 20,550.
Seems fair.
Amazing what you learn from Twitter: apparently pantos are posh and greyhound racing is a working class hobby. I grew up on Blarney St in Cork City,the definition of a working class area. Of the 400 + houses almost everyone went to a Panto and I knew 2 guys into greyhound racing
