It might seem like people who mark other people's work are trying to 'do the right thing' or 'putting students first', but in reality trying to break the boycott does the opposite: it degrades the crucial work of marking and feedback, diminishes disciplines, and devalues degrees.
Our
@ucu
branch is thrilled to report our members have said YES to
#IndustrialAction
and to
#ActionShortOfaStrike
. Over 544 out of 814 of our members turned out. A majority sent a clear message to the employer: NO to mandatory teaching on campus!
😟😮😢👎Students know breaking the boycott is not good for them or their tutors: "I've finally had the feedback through, and I am not happy. It seems I've been marked down for things which were... praised during seminars...They also called me names "Lazy and a little cheap"."
🧵🧵🧵🤔Q: What happens when students' work is marked by someone who didn't teach or supervise them?
☹️😠A: This..."I am extremely disappointed by both the mark and the feedback I have received"...
"the feedback I have received from the marker is unusually short"...

Our
@ucu
branch secretary, Emma-Jane Phillips, a wheelchair and assistance dog user, is being harassed by
@NorthumbriaUni
. Will vice-chancellor Andrew Wathey heed DrJoGrady’s call to stop this attempt to silence an admirable disability activist?
Silencing and ignoring students, blacklisting and impoverishing staff, trashing academic integrity and standards, and penalizing anyone who doesn't agree. Welcome to the workings of UK Higher Education 2023.
Trying to silence a disability activist with a disciplinary procedure (for tweeting about her workplace experience using a wheelchair) is what causes reputational damage
The use of vindictive disciplinary procedures to silence disabled staff sends a damaging message about the attitude of
@NorthumbriaUni
to disabled people
All staff should be free to raise concerns and advocate for themselves
We are dead proud to be university of the year, because our work made it happen, but also proud of being part of

Twice in 14 months Northumbria UCU members have voted to take
#IndustrialAction
, first on
#CovidSafety
, now on
#Workloads
and
#Pay
. Members are determined to make the university better for everyone. Employers take note.
This is so powerful.
Students are finishing university with TBC instead of grades and staff are still receiving punitive salary deductions.
The bosses could have ended this dispute well before graduations.
This is all on you,
@UCEA1

Let's get some facts straight. 🧵👇👇👇👇
1. The right to strike and take industrial action = a human right.✊
2. Taking industrial action is hard but can be effective. If it had no power the
@Conservatives
wouldn't be trying to remove your right to do it. ❌...
Immense thank you to all
@UCUNUbranch
members,
@DrJoGrady
(for coming up and helping out), allies, MPs, councillors, trade unionists, amazingly supportive students, and everyone who signed the petition...you did it.

“The university's announcement is welcome news for academic staff as they go into an Easter break and work hard to prepare students for final exams.”
All over, exam boards are mitigating the MAB using emergency measures brought in during Covid. Shouldn’t need saying, but the two are very different. You couldn’t negotiate your way out of Covid.
Hard agree. And if VCs really are the go-getting, outside-the-box, big-brains they are paid to be, why do they go all wobbly and limp when asked by their staff to make decisions to protect their students' work? "Sorry, would love to help settle the dispute but they won't let me."
If you want to run a university as a business, run it as a business. Gross incompetence and financial mismanagement are sacking offences. Immediate termination in the private sector. I won’t stop being angry until the entire Executive Team at UEA have been replaced.
Have to say - judging from Twitterverse, if this is what 'attempted' strike action looks like, heaven help
@UCEA1
. Maybe next time don't make an offer that leaves so many 'disappointed'?
Let's be clear: deducting anything from
@ucu
members for boycotts or action short of a strike suggests we don't already do more than 100%. And we do. If anything, we should get a pay rise to acknowledge this. Oh, hang on...
What do you get if your employer offers a 3% pay rise, but inflation is set to be 13%? You got it - a 10% pay cut (during a recession, with rising interest rates, and a soaring cost of living).
You've gotta love the idea that a government/ideology telling people to 'live within their means', and be 'enterprising' is run/propagated by people who just go cap-in-hand to daddy or rich mates when they need help.

F2F teaching wasn't safe 2 weeks ago. Will it be in 3 weeks' time? Perhaps if employers listen. But we stand together, ready to continue caring for our students, our loved ones, and to go ahead with the process of balloting for
#IndustrialAction
One thing about industrial action is it gives you chance to talk and think about things, and in ways, that you might not ordinarily do, as 'ordinary' life is suspended.
@UCUNUbranch
members have been sharing loads of great ideas today...
Would love to see see a nationwide survey to ask staff and students whether they think their university leadership teams have their constituents' best interests at heart.
If uni management really wanted outstanding marking to be done as quickly as possible, they'd make deals to avoid action. Instead, they force people into not working for 5 days, delaying the marking even more!

🌦️In Spring 2023, Northumbria UCU surveyed all academic staff (not just UCU members), at the ‘University of the Year’. There were 524 respondents. 67% were UCU members; 24% were not; 9% preferred not to say. This 🧵 has some results.
Well done
@KeeleUCU
. Universities wanting 3 year probation with shifting criteria = more precarity and stress, less security and support for staff, with a knock on effect on the student experience. We're expected to commit to employers, so why can't they commit to us?

'Myself and my peers are greatly disheartened at the recent publication of marks and feedback. The comments provided consist of contradictory advice and fail...
It might seem like people who mark other people's work are trying to 'do the right thing' or 'putting students first', but in reality trying to break the boycott does the opposite: it degrades the crucial work of marking and feedback, diminishes disciplines, and devalues degrees.
And precarity never stops, it just changes shape: whatever your grade, rank, or role, no matter how many things you publish or grants you win, you're made to feel no-one is ever safe, and nothing you do is ever enough. There has to be a better way.
Academia is not a meritocracy. We are led to believe that if you just work hard enough, sacrifice for a few years through precarity, it'll be enough.
The cruel reality it is likely not enough. Then we internalise that as an *us* problem. It's messed up.
We all know UK HE is broken. But senior managers at particular institutions choose to keep on breaking it - and their staff - in their own particular ways.

All this talk of a strike being damaging to students, I’ll tell you what is damaging to students:
Not enough staff
Not enough money in the right place in unis
Buildings in disrepair
Demoralised, disempowered and burnt out work force
Loss of goodwill that keeps things going
All this talk of a strike being damaging to children, I’ll tell you what is damaging to children:
Not enough teachers
Not enough money in schools
Buildings in a state of disrepair
Demoralised work force
Loss of goodwill that keeps things going
That will all do far more damage.

Only 7? What would YOU pick? Tell you 7 things driving the degradation of HE now, mate (and no pay wall required): 1. philistine and xenophobic politicians, 2. poor students doing so much paid work or caring they are stressed beyond belief because they've no time to study...
