It might seem like people who mark other people's work are trying to 'do the right thing' or 'putting students first', but in reality trying to break the boycott does the opposite: it degrades the crucial work of marking and feedback, diminishes disciplines, and devalues degrees.

Hard agree. And if VCs really are the go-getting, outside-the-box, big-brains they are paid to be, why do they go all wobbly and limp when asked by their staff to make decisions to protect their students' work? "Sorry, would love to help settle the dispute but they won't let me."
If you want to run a university as a business, run it as a business. Gross incompetence and financial mismanagement are sacking offences. Immediate termination in the private sector. I won’t stop being angry until the entire Executive Team at UEA have been replaced.

And precarity never stops, it just changes shape: whatever your grade, rank, or role, no matter how many things you publish or grants you win, you're made to feel no-one is ever safe, and nothing you do is ever enough. There has to be a better way.
Academia is not a meritocracy. We are led to believe that if you just work hard enough, sacrifice for a few years through precarity, it'll be enough.
The cruel reality it is likely not enough. Then we internalise that as an *us* problem. It's messed up.
