Reminder that Takeuchi made what is possibly one of the most iconic and influential CGs in the medium's history. And yes, you can say Saber and Shirou don't look as good here in this 2004 CG, but the composition and lighting are perfect.
The fact FGO has the nerve, the fucking gall to drop these outfits for the gorgon sisters and not make them spiritron dresses is a cardinal sin, a travesty, a crime deserving of its own little plot in hell to suffer in next to the inventor of the gacha.
While this is an egregious example of a bad decision made by a translation, I think that punctuating it with "mtl is therefore better" would hold more water if machine translators like deepl didn't have a tendency to randomly just not translate parts of the text.
Remember when localizers cut out entire sections from Mushoku Tensei? They did this throughout the first 9 volumes! The publisher eventually had to go back and reissue entirely new, corrected editions.
Localizers have no one to blame but themselves.
It sucks that people will use examples of sketchy or bad localization to say that all translators are evil but ignore countless examples of good localization because a good, natural-looking translation will be transparent by nature.
I'm starting to think Bisque Doll is a show only fully understandable by fans of eroge and other genuinely niche media. It has that same welding together of earnestness and ero, and the idea that there should be no such thing as a socially unacceptable hobby/passion.
people are legitimately dunking on this fantl for making the player character's gender ambiguous.
The "player character" in Ciel Nosurge is a mechanical terminal with a lens. From Ion's perspective, you're a mechanical gizmo in her room.
The thing that always baffles me when people go "but it'll date the tl" is that like... The original Japanese put in references and memes too, do those not date the original?
I think slang TL is always gonna be hit or miss and there are definitely some bad examples of those (esp when trying to match "character voice" for a modern teen) but I feel people are conflating a lot of old examples with words they personally hate seeing
To elaborate I would probably word this differently because "feminist" is also an old-fashioned way of describing men who are really nice to women, and I can very much imagine a dying Kiritusugu looking back on his mistakes telling Shirou not to be like him.
I'll add to this by saying that a bad translation, even if it is done with the best of intentions, can cause damage and spread misinformation. People can't always tell even if a tl is blatantly wrong, and it can propogate, false facts and all, many people none the wiser.
The JP used is 極度のフェミニスト so I assume this translation just stuck too close to the original wording, which isn't ideal, but like... They didn't make stuff up either.
Caren's first ascension line has her say she considered putting on a nun's clothes, but someone else in nun's clothes is going to eventually come, so she went with her tastes instead.
Guys make sure to enjoy FSN as it is now before it's patched out, in 50 years you'll be able to tell your grandkids you were there to play the FSN Randomizer Nuzlocke.
I felt inclined to make this PSA because honestly the FSN Remaster's translation looks stellar from everything I've seen, and having people try to write it off based on this would just be a shame.
After reading a certain part from 86 v11's climax I simply had to translate it, so I figured I'd share it with the community.
Spoilers for volume 11 and all volumes that lead up to it ofc, so don't read this if you don't want to be spoiled:
Very very very excited and honored to announce I'm the translator for Gore Screaming Show! This game is an absolute classic of the ero-guro genre with one of the most memorable villains in the game. It's one of my favorite games ever and I am excited to bring it to the west!
@Shikihamel
Famitsu interview says that among the answers 9000 FGO players gave about what they expect from the game in the future was the "greedy" expectation to have a gacha ceiling that lets you pick a 5* character after rolling a certain amount of SQ.
You don't appreciate how insane FSN is visually until you read a lot of VNs and see what the usual standard is. The sheer amount of assets is mind-boggling for a 2004 VN from a company that hasn't fully become a household name yet, and so many of its CGs are legendary.
For instance, I just took a random part from Your Forma volume 6 and threw it through deepl to see what it would do.
The highlighted bit of narration in the jp line is missing entirely in the English output.
Finding wholesomeness and self-acceptance through a deeply personal hobby that explores your sexuality may be a conversation that's too early for some people on this site.
@averylazydevil
Because they don't care about the books/games/vns themselves. I'm pretty sure a lot of the people who engage in this kind of translation bashing don't actually engage with the things they're talking about. They just want to score points in their culture war.
As of today, Gore Screaming Show's translation is complete! Translation for the common route, all 5 character routes and 13 endings is done.
There's still work to do, and the team's putting double and triple effort into editing and QC to make sure everything's extra polished!
Fantl puts in chest messages: Revolutionary, hilarious, daring, adds in charm.
Official translation uses the same chest messages: Politically-biased, unfunny, topical, ruins the experience.
Glad to finally announce that me and
@blockwonkel
are working with PQube to localize Bustafellows! It's definitely an exciting game with great characters, a charming protagonist and lots of crime drama, so do check it out when it's out in 2021!

Also, I'm one of the translators for Tokyo Necro! It's an honestly impressive and ambitious game, both visually and story-wise. The setting is incredibly detailed and well-done and I'm honestly happy people are going to experience this soon!
Dies Irae is a work of brilliant metafiction populated by some of the most vibrant and gripping character writing I've ever seen. Anyone trying to reduce it to just "n*zi shit" is a bonehead who should get daily noogies.
I feel like Steiner is pretty rude and unprofessional, why are localisation companies so eager to work with him? — Because loc companies hire people based off of the consistency and accuracy of their output, not how they handle unhinged ra…
If you read her tweet without your outrage goggles on, you'd see she's criticizing the mtl'd lines compared to the English script, not the original JP script to the English script.
I mean, surely these people aren't equating the mtl'd output to the JP script. Right?
Right???
I categorically do not trust prudes. The hornies are upfront about themselves, giving a good precedent of honesty, and if they're creatives, you can know their passion is in it. Prudes on the other hand lie; their blood is as red and hot as anyone's, but they lie and hide it.
Over time, you learn to respect people for being openly horny on main, because, man, sometimes you feel like a a moege heroine who is embarrassed to simply say one obscene word
Like to elaborate I think anyone claiming either the gooner or the wholesome side is the point is kind of getting it wrong. It's the synthesis of the two.
Translated this bit from Nasu's last post on the Bamboo Broom Diary regarding their relationship with CHOCO and the creation of Fae Knight Lancelot. Enjoy!
Okay Atlus, hear me out here. This could make or break things.
I know that SMT Imagine was kind of shite, but, I want you to bring its most important legacy over to SMT5.
The stranglehold on 18+ content is really becoming more tyrannical as time goes on. Between payment processors cutting out DLSite, amazon hiding 18+ games from foreign users and even blogs(!) are starting to get hit from being allowed to discuss it.
I really wish people would shake off the perception TM only wrote porn because they had to. Nasu is mad horny throughout his body of work and it's true to this day.
Right, so, normally I wouldn't engage with this, but with Bustafellows there's actually an interesting point to be made with this. A few months ago the developer was asked if they were interested in having the game localized, and they replied they have their qualms about it.

I think one important thing an aspiring j-e translator need to get out of their system is to not to adhere too strongly to the jp sentence style, unless there's a very strong plot.
You need to know to rearrange and reword things as necessary.
One thing that makes me shrivel up and crumble away in old age is when I mention that melon pan is a famous anime snack because of Shana and the kids tell me they don't know who Shana is.

moreover, when you translate for hours it's very easy to get brain fog and get lost in the sauce. having something to bounce off of helps.
I'd go so far as to say that you probably shouldn't use deepl at all unless you already know the target language.
It's very common to bounce lines you're struggling with off an MTL service to get a new perspective. There's nothing wrong with using those tools as long as you're applying the output intelligently. Translation isn't a closed-book exam.
Some people call it the "side story volume", but no only do the side stories shed a lot of light on Shin and the state of affairs in the 86th sector, it also touches on other lore issues like Fido's identity, Shin's parents, and more.
Cover Debut! - 86--EIGHTY-SIX, Vol. 10 (light novel):

Excited to announce my fan translation of Tsui no Sora 1999! The game will include all the game's text and as a retranslation of the 2002 OVA. The game will be released in Powerpoint Slideshow format to emulate the original Macromedia Shockwave experience.

Bustafellows is out! I hope everyone tries it out and enjoys it. It's been a blast working on it with
@blockwonkel
, because it's a great game! Wonderful characters, an electrifying atmosphere and pacing and beautiful visuals.

The unique Japanese concept of 歯磨き, an ancient purification ritual done every morning and every night to maintain a pure soul and mouth. Perhaps by mastering this exotic, esoteric idea, the west can finally cleanse itself of its sins...
please. stop satanically worshiping my gf!!! you are making her too strong. she broke out of owari in her adult form and the shinsengumi can't stop her, she's too powerful
Episode 4 of 86 is absolutely, positively fantastic.
A good 60% of it is new content but it's all perfectly paced, in-tone and describes Lena's crisis better than the novel did. The adaptation's pacing gives the story the time it needs to breathe.
I think one of the things that makes me respect Asato Asato a lot compared to other writers is that she doesn't pretend like she's some kind of genius that planned everything ahead of time. She consistently says on twitter/interviews that "yeah lol idk I was just winging it"
NEW NOVEL ANNOUNCEMENT: Your Forma
Your Forma, a technology developed to safeguard against viral encephalitis, has become commonplace. Officer Echika must use this invasive technology to crack cases in a world where your every sight, sound, and emotion is being recorded.
So with GSS' release date announced, I've seen some people bring up legitimate questions: What is this game about, why should I play it, how gory is it, etc.
So I figured I'd make a thread to answer these questions and maybe knock out some preconceived notions.

AUDIOBOOK ANNOUNCEMENT: 86--EIGHTY-SIX
After years of research, the Republic of San Magnolia has finally developed autonomous drones, turning their struggle with the Giadian Empire into a war without casualties—or at least, that’s what the government claims.
Coming July 2022!
Remembered this during an h-scene I'm working on rn. Ran into the line もはや俺は猿と化していた and I really really want to translate it as "I have by now returned to monke"
In JP a man going wild during sex is often likened to a monkey, but this has a more comical sound in English, where comparisons to simply a "wild animal" work better.
The idea is that you're looking into Ion's life from beyond the dimensions, literally peering through the fourth wall—and there's no telling who you are. The game calls out the fact that the characters in Ciel Nosurge's world don't know you or what gender you are.
>story focused game
>reprehensible main heroine
>family abuse
>heavy violence
>satanic rituals
>cannibalism

Gore Screaming Show is 29.99$ on Steam and the JAST store.
86 episodes 22 and 23 will air on March 12th and 19th respectively.
It hurts, but hopefully it means the sakuga at the end of the season will be absolutely insane.
I can understand why they don't actually mention editing, because I'm pretty sure any editor who'd be brought to a fixed mtl script written by 20 different people would likely just tell them to trash the whole thing and start over from scratch.
Episode 19 delayed too, huh?
Given that 18 was great and 19 is shaping up to be a big action sequence episode, I'm hoping this is simply because they need more time to maintain the quality.
Finishing up work on volume 4 of Your Forma these days and as always, I'm impressed by how well-written, well-researched and contemporary this series is. I think it's rare to find a sci-fi series that's so relevant and deeply-rooted with topics of the day.
Happy to announce that
@blockwonkel
