Social expectations were different and private expressions of grief that remain - in women’s letters and diaries - don’t match outward pious expressions of saintly forbearance,

@fectin @JNMezzo @laserboat999 They didn’t expect it really. They all desperately hoped it wouldn’t happen but the church told them that they should be happy their child would have gone to heaven so they couldn’t be outwardly too sad.

@SilenceInPolish This happened to my grandfather and his family, when he was 14. He told me little bits about it but it’s only with the modern invasion of Ukraine that I realise how bloodless he made it for me.

@danny_robins @BBCTwo @BBCiPlayer Just a thought on the first auditory phenomenon. Talking in sibilants is speaking in a kind of hissing whisper. So it might be that Sybil heard a sibilant whisper?

@benryanwriter We used to host a lot more too, with similar results. We stopped doing evening meals and started doing relaxed Sunday lunches so kids could come too and it wasn’t intimidating. Still v few invites back - so we only host for really good friends now!

@weirddalle Absolutely beautiful and soothing work. Would be lovely to see them strung together in colour coded garlands and hung about the room
