Critics are supposed to recommend weird stuff that regular people probably haven't heard of and don't know anything about. If they don't they aren't doing their job properly. It's what makes them different from corporate marketing departments.

Miami Vice is pure propaganda. It’s impossible to make a good mojito under Castro’s oppressive regime and the idea that there could be women as beautiful as Gong Li in Cuba is a fantasy designed to lure gullible young people away from the purity of American corporate capitalism.

My girlfriend in high school told me that when she saw Bram Stoker's Dracula there was a man sitting next to her who, whenever something crazy would happen in the movie, would shake his head and sigh and say "Oh, Francis!" 27 years later I still think about this all the time.

It takes Hong at most like two weeks to make a movie. If he makes three a year thats still 46 weeks for him to just be hanging around the house, going to cafés, and learning to play the guitar.

Hou has insisted that he hadn’t seen any Ozu films until the late 1980s, well after he made Green Green Grass. There’s a whole essay about Western critics’ insistence on linking the two, while acknowledging the lack of actual influence up to that point, in this book.
