Happy to begin a new viewing/writing project! This is Hong Sang-soo Notarized, a full rewatch of his films accompanied by too-detailed tabulation of his recurring motifs, devices, and interests, along with some sketched notes on each film. The posts will all be threaded below:

Something intriguing in the deliberately lopsided time given to the first target versus the others; lots of great digital transitions/superimpositions especially in their emphasis of the shared fecklessness between predator and prey; wish the family was integrated a tad better.

NO OTHER CHOICE: Unfurls the far-reaching logical extent of its wicked and very modern scenario at a deliberate but still jam-packed pace; can be somewhat inconsistent but the ingenuity of Park’s sequences and images never truly flags; often quite amusing in its messiness.

Wouldn’t work half as well without Dafoe, who perfectly embodies the kind of relaxed quasi-naturalism that everyone else (especially Lee’s very curious but intentional performance) must bounce off of; some lovely interstitial shots of city life too.

LATE FAME: Endearing in the careful line that Jones walks (sometimes thrillingly unsuccessfully) between incisive satire of literary society’s feedback loop and a genuine belief in art’s ability to shape life in the modern city; a real treat.

$SNPS bought $ANSS for the wrong price. To add salt to the wound, they used $15bn in debt. The high bar of $15 EPS came in low. Market making $SNPS pay the price.

Love how the cast (finally another great feature role for Cole Doman aka Henry Gamble) falls away around O’Connor and his perpetually watchful yet rootless demeanor, and this might be the best score in a year of great ones; absolutely insane opening credits choice.

THE MASTERMIND: Uses its would-be hero as both incarnation and witness to an especially pitiless landscape of dead ends and failed reinventions; the manner in which Reichardt’s rhythms drift between tight procedural and aimless rootlessness are fascinating.

Especially interesting to see Paula Beer in a much less forthrightly opaque emotional state than usual and how that interacts with the shifting stasis of the family; any film that implicitly places Frankie Valli’s “The Night” on the same level as Ravel is endearing.

MIROIRS NO. 3: A bit more narratively straightforward than usual for Petzold, but his eye for the details and behaviors that make up a space and family freighted with subterranean tension is as firm as ever, especially considering some superb tonal turns.

TV doesn’t get better than this
Fatima Cortez Todd, the widow of Tony Todd, is disappointed that Tony wasn’t included in the ‘In Memoriam’ segment at the Emmys. “Tony had a long list of TV credits but he was not respected as much by the industry he gave his artistic life” (Source: https://t.co/oadvw8oxIk)
