Kurosawa's son would recall, "My father was always thinking about doing something new and interesting. That's why he watched a lot of TV, and he found Peter himself, thinking, 'There's an interesting one there.' His androgynous aura was perfect for that role, I think."
This reminds me that Akira Kurosawa more than likely watched Funeral Parade of Roses (1969) when he cast famous drag performer Peter as the fool in Ran (1985)
