General Secretary UCG. From each according to their ability, to each according to their needs. “It was not so much a movement as a monument”. Loyaulté Me Lie
After the Civil War , in 1654 Oliver Cromwell set up the Fellowship of Master Hackney Carriages by Act of Parliament, and taxi driving became a profession. This makes the licensed taxi trade the oldest regulated public transport system in the world.
It’s been a long journey, with plenty of knocks, plenty of mistakes along the way. But TfL are facing a different Taxi Trade in 2021 a trade that is prepared to fund and defend its interests in court . No longer will we be complicit those days are well and truly over
Delighted to announce joint
@UTAG17
@TheLTDA
JR of Streetspace + Bishopsgate succeeded! High Court ruled Mayor + TfL acted UNLAWFULLY finding overwhelmingly in our favour. Streetspace Plan and Bishopsgate Order overturned. Landmark decision for the trade. More to follow.
I never said we were buses. I said only 2 vehicles are publicly hired , buses & Taxis. Oh how they laughed . It seems Justice Lang agrees with me. Who’s laughing now..?
There’s a long way to go. We’ve got past the first hurdle, we will be seeing TfL in Court. Let that sink in . Today belongs to all of you who have contributed and supported
@UTAG17
onwards and upwards 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I want to thank you for your kind tweets. I’m so happy to have played a small part , in this massive victory for you my fellow cabbies. I’ve always been proud to be a London Cabby none more so than today
Let’s not forget, that TfL were neutral not once but twice where Uber were concerned, but are appealing the decision to allow Taxis access. They are not taking a neutral stance with us. We shouldn’t with them
It’s been 59 years Rose v Welbeck in 1962 since the trade last won anything meaningful . Today’s judgement is monumental. Thanks to everyone who supported and contributed . You gave us your hard earned money but most importantly you gave us your trust👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I think we all expect that by Wednesday TfL will have asked the court of appeal permission to appeal the Bishopsgate/ streetspace decision. A criminal waste of Tax payers money imo. It’s worth remembering they never appealed a certain mini cab operators licence decision .
We do have to ask ourselves why our self proclaimed world class regulator , didn’t appeal Uber being issued a licence after they had refused to relicence them, not once but twice , but they want to appeal Taxis special status ,our legitimate expectation etc etc
The trade must take TfL to court in a commercial case , this case must include a certain mini cab app, ergo our exclusive right to P4H . Defend the 2 tier system stop mini cabs p4h . Seek Substantial damages. This doesn’t come cheap it’s £250 per driver. Support
@UTAG17
Lets not forget that Uber came for costs against us. We are paying them absolutely nothing. For me that feels like the first victory for our trade in a long time. The futures bright, the futures
@UTAG17
In less than six weeks we will be in court against TfL in the Bishopsgate appeal. We’re awaiting a court date against Camden Council ( tot crt rd) we’re also awaiting a court date against Freenow. Talks cheap, action speaks louder than words. Support
@UTAG17
The taxi trade should not have to pay to drop off at Heathrow, Taxis are publicly hired. To say oh it’s ok because the public are paying it via extras , is so short sighted. It will set a precedent, it’s wrong . It’s also anti competitive imo .
To become a London Taxi Driver . You must complete the Knowledge. That’s because Taxis are publicly hired, PH are privately hired . That’s why our standards are so much higher.Its also worth noting that
Built in social distancing comes as standard.
Many are asking can we go through bank, can we now drive up Tottenham Court Road. We must allow for the legal issues to be resolved. I get the frustration , please be patient. TfL are meeting all 32 of the local councils legal teams tomorrow 28/1/21 . Our Win is massive
We’ve all been on KOL, We all know the commitment it takes. We all know the financial restrictions it imposed upon us. Those on the KOL are part of our family. The response to the £5 per month
@UTAG17
plan from those on the KOL has blown me away 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I don’t know why cyclist perceive us as their enemy. Their dislike for us is all consuming,we’re working class men &women a lot of these cyclists are middle class they don’t know a thing about our trade,they don’t know the difference between a taxi and a mini cab.Embarrassing
It’s been an amazing couple of days , I’m still buzzing tbh. For many years I alongside many others have said we have a special status etc etc. We’ve been ridiculed , vilified, insulted on Wednesday we were vindicated. To all of my fellow cultists, feels great doesn’t it.
Our trade never ceases to amaze me, the amount of sign ups to
@UTAG17
since last week’s judgement and baring in mind we’re in a lockdown. Is nothing short of phenomenal
The issue isn’t Uber, Ola , bolt etc. The issue is Tfl have allowed freelance mini cab drivers to P4H via an app. They’ve allowed them to work in a market they are neither qualified or licensed to work in. Support
@UTAG17
let’s get Tfl into court
In 7 days time TfL’s appeal against the Bishopsgate decision will begin. It’s worth remembering that TfL have never appealed a certain PH app being relicensed . They went neutral not once , but twice
It’s obvious why the KOL numbers are so low, it’s because TfL have allowed mini cab drivers to p4h via an app. It’s no good looking to change the KOL while doing nothing about PH working in our market. Focus on that first .
We know through doing the KOL that you get knocked down, you pick yourself up dust yourself down and go again. I know what this trade is made off, TfL are about to find out
UTAG are fighting bishopsgate, Kaptan, Camden. I think even our distractors will acknowledge, the trades never seen anything like it. So all of you’s who subscribe to UTAG . You Lions 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Still on cloud 9 over yesterday’s historical victory for the London Cab trade.I publicly thanked all the Cabbies who supported UTAG it was remiss of me not to thank the original stakeholders our trade owe them a huge debt of gratitude.We’re all in it together. Thanks so much 👏🏻👏🏻
Surprise Surprise TfL have announced our exclusion from Bishopsgate is to be made permanent. I distinctly remember them saying in the appeal Court that Bishopsgate was in response to the pandemic. Are we going to pontificate and do nothing or are we going to take them on.
@UTAG17
Only 24 hours until the JR. I want to thank everyone who’ve signed up to
@UTAG17
. I can’t remember when I was last this nervous. Im so proud to be one of London’s finest .
I’d like to thank everyone for their kind tweets, it means a lot. Today is all about our trade. Ask not what the London Taxi trades done for you, ask what have you done for the London Taxi trade. Or words to that effect . Without your support none of this would be possible
If TfL don’t want us then negotiate our redundancies. But they can’t even do that, by their actions they are trying to condemn us to a slow painful death by a thousand cuts and hide behind market forces and modern technology etc etc . Some of us see it for what it is .
I really do understand drivers frustration. The legal bundle served on TfL on Wednesday has 1,199 pages of our legal argument against our exclusion. Outstanding work by our legal team . Now is not the time to demo imo. It could undermine all that hard work
We’re going to have a debrief with the legal team in the coming days. Many of you witnessed what occurred, how our QC seemed to be on trial. My opinion for what it’s worth, is we take this all the way to the Supreme Court , obviously subject to what David & Charles say
We came into being in 1654 TfL came into being in 2000 we predate them by 346 yrs Tomorrow the regulator will try to overturn our hard earned rights ergo publicly hired etc etc . They never invented us, they inherited us. See you in Court
Some big battles are looming, there’s the battle of bishopsgate part 2, then there’s the UBER part 8 declaration. UTAG will be in the thick of all this. Fighting the fight for the London Taxi Trade. Your financial contribution has made this possible. Support
@UTAG17
London’s taxi drivers are acknowledged to be the best in the world. London invented the Taxi Trade, P4H originated in London and now TfL have allowed untrained freelance mini cab drivers to work in our market via an app a market they are neither licenced or qualified to work in
Congratulations to Darren for being named Times Lawyer of the week. I don’t think we actually appreciate the magnitude of our victory. From being called luddites, loonies and then last we to be Vindicated. Take a bow 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
UTAG had a meeting with the legal team yesterday. We spoke about the P4H appeal . Our legal team told us, this is absolutely now or never for the London Taxi Trade this is the biggie. Support
@UTAG17
together we can do this
A pandemic / recession we could probably handle. What we can’t handle is unfair competition , and being categorised as a normal vehicle for the purpose of road access.
UTAG are back in court today, but we’ve already won. We’ve ended the myth that Reading ended the p4h argument, we’ve brought action via a JR and we made Uber shit the bed and seek a part 8 declaration. All that for £250 , it’s bargain. Support
@UTAG17
In 2012 the taxi trade should have taken TfL to court over the licencing of a certain ph app. In 2022 UTAG will be taking TfL to court , it’s only taken 10 years, better late than never . Support
@UTAG17
This is why freenow Pay PH driver’s congestion charge .Because It requires PH drivers to drive the streets in search of fares, otherwise they can never hope to be sufficiently close to persons using the Free Now App to secure a fare. Don’t let anyone tell you they are not p4h
We’ve ruffled a few feathers today. Never got the result we wanted, but we’ve put everyone on notice. Now it’s up to you, my fellow drivers. Get behind UTAG, let’s get Tfl into court
I’m a boy off a council estate, not the best educated, most of my school friends chose a criminal path, the London Taxi Trade gave me and many like me the opportunity to better myself, for my child to have all of life’s opportunities I owe this trade everything
In just a few short months UTAG has more financial contributors, than the UCG, LCDC, RMT, UNITE have in combined membership. Let that sink in . Support
@UTAG17
defend your job
We genuinely couldn’t have done any more. We’ve got the issue of P4H via technology to the court . It’s still all to play for . The taxi trade have turned up to defend our working practices. A big thank you to
@CabvisionTaxi
@chilternlaw2013
and the 3 thousand UTAG subscribers
A level playing field assumes we do the same job. I didn’t complete the KOL to attain a level playing field with PH. Am I missing something? We want a level playing field with someone who hasn’t the level of training and is neither licenced or qualified to work in our market
We have lots to focus on. Reports of our demise, were grossly exaggerated. We’re still here, we’ve not gone away. The days of the taxi trade , pontificating on Twitter, but doing nothing. Are well and truly over . Support
@UTAG17
You’ve seen on my TL Gett teaming up with Ola. Freenow offering us a £5 to sell our customers. All this is happening under TfL’s watch . Exactly who should the trade be taking to court , the prostitute or the pimp
Stopping Taxis having access to roads that buses have access too, to help bus times. All the revenue goes to TfL .Bus operators receive Subsidies. That sounds awfully like a restriction of trade 🤔
I don’t want arguments with Cyclists. Taxis are not their enemy. I think many cyclists do not understand the difference between a Taxi and a mini cab. Thus leading to arguments on Twitter
IMO what Marcus and Freenow mean by “To reform the Knowledge of London to make it more accessible for potential applicants” . Is make the KOL easier so lazy f***kers who want what we’ve got but don’t want to work for it . Lowering our standards , will inevitably lead to one tier
Some might view these road restrictions as a single issue. Others like myself view these restrictions as the fundamental issue, without access to roads our job is no longer viable. To all those who share my point of view, today belongs to you
I believe that the Taxi Trade will one day get TfL into court in an economical tort. That’s who we should be focusing on, then add in a certain mini cab app as a co conspirator in a conspiracy tort. We’re talking serious damages to quote a prominent QC .At least a billion
TfL the regulator is going neutral on Uber part 8 declaration
TfL have asked the court if UTAG are successful please don’t quash FreeNows licence.The role of the regulator is to regulate,not to take a softly softly approach and allow PH an advantage that infringes on our rights
In this present financial climate, your response to UTAG’s call to arms, has blown me away. I don’t know how to thank you. You’re absolutely different class.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Let’s never forget only UTAG stood up for the trade in the recent part8 proceedings. The fact that UTAG was successful should not deflect from the fact that it stood alone. Support
@UTAG17
.
I’d like to think there is not a London Cab driver out there who doesn’t understand the importance and value that this high court judgement holds for our special p4h status
My TL is full of people being pessimistic about the upcoming appeal. I do understand that due to historically we never seem to get the rub of the green. I tell you this for nothing, I’d rather have our hand than TfL’s . Stand tall , stand proud my fellow cabbies bring it on
, I was organising demos for the UCG . My wife collapsed with a brain haemorrhage, the trade tooted their horns at an agreed time. Both myself and my daughter were distraught with worry . Cabbies brought food to my house, gave me money I didn’t know them. That’s why I love ya .
Yesterday the UCG , supported by the LTDA & Unite raised the issue of these proposed UBER pick up points. We made TfL aware that we see it as a virtue rank. Only hackney carriages may lawfully ply or stand for hire. It is their defining characteristic. That’s the law !!
@tom_watson
It’s totally irresponsible for health reasons and it’s a pr move ahead of 7 April tribunal being held on 1 billion plus owed in VAT. I would have more respect if you pulled up these Tax avoiding companies for the parasites they are
UTAG was formed to defend the trade and take TfL to court. We’re taking TfL to court, papers were served Wednesday. The people associated with UTAG will put the interests of the trade first.
Great news for UTAG .We was successful in getting the part 8 and JR rolled up together. Now scheduled to be heard in the divisional court for 3 days in November.
Let me reiterate one more time . UTAG and only UTAG took out the judicial review (JR) Win or lose be proud in the part you played, without your support
@UTAG17
couldn’t have done this, Now UTAG will focus on the big one Tfl . Please support UTAG
It’s not rocket science , TfL have allowed minicabs to work in our market (Plying 4 Hire on apps) yet that never featured yesterday . Personally I found FreeNow’s attendance as a non licensed one tier enabling entity offensive.
For those who haven’t contributed to UTAG that’s between you and your conscience . I’m proud to stand amongst the 3 thousand fighters, absolute lions .
I do not consider that the Defendants have a real prospect of success on appeal, for the reasons I have set out in my judgment. Nor is there some other compelling reason why the appeal should be heard - Mrs Justice Lang.
The call went out , UTAG was introducing a £5 a month scheme. The take up from KOL students 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 If this is the calibre of KOL students, our future is in safe hands . Take a Bow , Boys & Girls
