I am SO proud to announce that I have been accepted into the American Cinema Editors! I'm officially Steve Hullfish, ACE. I'm overjoyed at this recognition! Special thanks to Walter Murch, Joe Walker, Alan Bell, and John Axelrad for their help In getting me in!
@SenMikeLee
Thank you Mike! I agree that Judge Cannon should be held accountable. Surely, you don't mean Bragg and Merchan since a jury convicted. I mean, that's just American justice. But justice DENIED? That's a cudgel.
@FDRLST
As someone who claims to know “false gospel” you surely understand the Federalist is mostly guilty of legalism which Jesus REALLY despised. What Jesus would be for is Dolly Parton and a gospel of love. And judging is not up to you…. If you know your gospel. But you don’t.

I think killing high student loan INTEREST RATES makes more sense than loan forgiveness. I worked for MY tuition and saved decades for my KIDS' tuition. And chose schools based on what I could afford. Some people choose NOT to go into debt for college...by not going.
Interview with Frances McDormand: “I always look for people that understand that cinema is an editor’s medium. Not the actor. Not the director. Not the writer. Someone has to edit it into a film.”
Oscar-winning editor, Paul Hirsch, ACE, graciously shared decades of editing wisdom in the most recent ART OF THE CUT interview. Read it here:

This happened to me at my first job. My company didn’t submit my show but several other producers instead. I submitted myself. I was the only one from the company who was nominated. Good for her.

I could never purchase anything with this many grammatical and spelling errors in the ad. Clearly no care given to craftsmanship or detail.

Art of the Cut interview with some GREAT information. Also a lovely shoutout to
@Betaer
who set-up the franchise, editorially speaking.
I am proud and super-excited to announce that I have just been signed to a contract to deliver my seventh book, “Art of the Cut: Conversations with Film and TV editors, Volume 2” by my publisher Taylor and Francis (Routledge Press). 6 years in the making! Coming spring 2024
Congrats to Paul Rogers on the BAFTA for Best Editing. This quote gives a little insight into why he might have won. And it has nothing to do with making an edit or knowing how to run Adobe Premiere (which EEAAO was edited on)

I needed reaction shots. This is why editors are needed. Being on the person speaking is rarely as intriguing or revealing as being on the person who is on the other side of the conversation. CUT TO THE MONEY! :-)
Directors should listen to Art of the Cut! From Kevin Tent, ACE: Director Henry Ruben, did something I loved. After getting all the takes he needed, he had the actors do the scene w/o any dialogue - do all the action and blocking but don’t speak. We wound up using a lot of it.
I hosted every Art of the Cut interview, but somehow, working on Volume 2 of the book, I keep discovering things I "never knew." Like: In "Bladerunner 2049" the Brahms piano lullaby that lures K inside the casino was actually performed by editor Joe Walker, ACE.
Here is a MASSIVE deep dive on the post-production of the Best Picture nominees, expertly written by Lisa McNamara. I was happy to help source a lot of the information for it.
Look what just came in FedEx today!!!! I am so excited to share this with the filmmaking community! This is a love letter to editing and editors. With the opening stanzas composed by

Working on the "Reaction Shots" chapter of Art of the Cut Volume 2. (Don't you want to read a book with an entire chapter on Reaction Shots?)
I've heard this crazy idea from a couple of editors. I'm dying to try it as a director.
My film editing books. My favorites are Murch’s The Conversations and Paul Hirsch’s A Long Time Ago…also missing

Art of the Cut fans... I'm starting a new venture. I could use as many followers as I can get. If anyone could support that effort, I'd appreciate it. You know it's all about delivering valuable content and knowledge for me. I'm a worthy follow.
I've often spoken about the fact that patience is a key trait for editors... believing in the process, working through it, knowing things will be discovered that you can't know today... From Joyce Meyer: “Patience is not the ability to wait but how you act while you’re waiting.”
I posted a new addendum to my Art of the Cut with

As an editor, how much would you pay for a button on your NLE of choice that you could press while watching dailies that the manufacturer claimed would send a jolt of electrical current through the body of the camera operator? Today I would pay one million dollars.

Met my wife by sitting next to her on an airplane. I noticed she was freezing cold. I gave her my coat. 30 years later still married and still flying sitting next to each other. I kept the boarding pass for decades. Can’t find it anymore. I still have the paper with her phone #

Lots of editors will claim that they work intuitively. But psychologists say that intuition and insight (acquired knowledge and the ability to apply it) are not that different. It's all about seeing - and feeling - patterns. Feel free to disagree and hash it out in the comments!
