‘A winning candidate will make voters believe that things will change, for the better.’ — Here’s why Democrats should stop looking for ‘electability’ and vote for what inspires them instead
Bailouts are coming. I'd like to suggest one simple rule for Democrats to follow right now:
Bailout people, not corporations.
Not banks, not airlines, not cruises, not oil.
People.
@jordanzakarin
I would like the Biden Administration and Kate Bedingfield (who put out this statement) to say which activists they believe are "out-of-step with the mainstream" and on what issue.
Katie Porter was successful because she figured out the executive authority the CDC could use to make tests free, and then pushed them to use it.
That’s the magic of
#WarrenDemocrats
: deep knowledge of executive power, and willingness to use every inch of power when needed.
I love this story about how the campaign to expand Social Security got started, because it shows how Elizabeth Warren thinks — strategically, and on offense. She thinks like an organizer.
I used to negotiate union contracts. I would have loved to focus all our bargaining power on wages and working conditions instead of health care. Medicare for All will make unions stronger, and help workers win more at the table. Pete is totally wrong on this.
There are 14 million union workers in America who have fought hard for strong, employer-provided health benefits. Medicare for All Who Want It protects their plans and union members' freedom to choose the coverage that's best for them.
I keep thinking about how
@ewarren
says "I am not afraid," and what a simple, powerful statement that is, especially in a moment of profound Constitutional and moral crisis like this one. We all need to keep saying it. I am not afraid.
This is the Elizabeth Warren who became a frontrunner in the polls — relaxed, funny, energetic, relentless, with anti-corruption the center of her message. She’s back.

Stop listening to pundits. Stop trying to second-guess the polls. Stop worrying.
If you think Elizabeth Warren would be the best president, then vote for her! That's the whole point of democracy. We vote for the person we think would be best for the job.
@brianbeutler
If Biden loses, it's pretty clear he will lose because he alienated a large, key swath of the Democratic base by supporting the Israeli government's war crimes and atrocities against Palestinians -- not because of his domestic agenda.
Let's be clear. Warren's plan to achieve Medicare for All is superior in every way to what Sanders is proposing here -- her plan is politically feasible, fully funded, expands Medicare faster, 3 year transition instead of 4 years.
She's the best Medicare for All candidate.
The
@JulianCastro
endorsement of
@ewarren
reflects that she's the real deal, merging big ideas of economic & racial justice. Both know immigration, universal child care, economic growth, and criminal justice reform don't exist in silos. They are part of a big picture vision.

A tribunal of religious zealots are imposing their beliefs on 70% of Americans and sentencing women to death, people are outraged and scared, and THIS is your response?
It is a major problem in the Democratic Party that the establishment systematically, without fail, destroys every charismatic young leader that emerges. They take the candidates that voters are most excited about, and they crush them.
This video is from a house party in 2011, when Elizabeth Warren was still thinking about running for Senate. The host only expected a handful of people. Over a million people ended up viewing one of the best arguments for a wealth tax ever made.
I endorse Elizabeth Warren because she has the only real plan to achieve Medicare for All — and there is no one I trust more to oversee its implementation.

I was in a bar yesterday and every TV in the place was turned to FOX News -- which was running wall-to-wall coverage of BIDEN scandals, and not mentioning one word about Trump. When Democrats stay silent, Republicans run the narrative.
"President Joe Biden and his top aides have taken a vow of silence on the federal indictment of his predecessor, Donald Trump — and have explicitly ordered the national Democratic Party and his reelection campaign to do the same."
@brianbeutler
As you say, the CW was always going to claim that Biden lost because he was "too progressive" domestically. In this case, we can point to a very specific moment of rupture between Biden and the critical constituencies he needs, unrelated to his domestic agenda.
This is what real-time accountability looks like, and exactly the model that other committees and state parties should be following. Great work,

I want to add: A trillion-dollar infrastructure bill is awesome. It's awesome that Bernie proposed it! We just wanted to give it the best chance of passage as possible. The disconnect is strategic, not ideological. We're all still on the same side.
Biden ran on one message in 2020 ("beat Trump") and barely squeaked out a win by 44,000 votes in 3 swing states.
And Democrats lost a *lot* of Senate, House and state races because “beat Trump” doesn’t work down-ballot when the rest of the party message is so moribund.
So many Democrats reflexively defend institutions, even when those institutions are obviously, irretrievably broken. Meanwhile right-wingers run *against* institutions, even when it’s just lip service and done in bad faith. Lucas Kunce gets it right.
Elizabeth Warren’s student debt plan is a big deal because it's a plan to cancel debt through the Department of Education, not Congress. That’s what would make her a great president — she’ll use every lever of executive power to get things done.
Giving birth to my second child, I had a life-threatening hemorrhage. When I got pregnant again, my doctors wanted to give me an iron transfusion ahead of delivery in case I had another hemorrhage. My insurance tried to deny it as "not medically necessary."
You knows good and well this isn't about defeating Trump. This is about you promising favors to rich people in return for them funding your primary campaign.
We're in the fight of our lives. This president and his allies will stop at nothing—not even foreign interference—to hold onto power. This year alone, they’ve raised over $300 million to win re-election.
I'm not going to turn away anyone who wants to help defeat this president.

I hope more reporters and members of Congress ask serious questions about why the U.S. kept providing coordinates even after repeated attacks on the coordinates they were providing.
Here is a quick-and-dirty spreadsheet with Twitter handles and phone numbers for Cabinet secretaries.
Ask them to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove Trump from office.
My grandmother (!) was a Teamster. My mother was a medical secretary who tried to unionize her hospital. I worked as a union organizer in Appalachia. I believe in working-class power. And I support Warren because she believes in it too.
Yes, the election is now certified. But Republicans have broken yet another democratic norm. Votes to certify election results — once uncontroversial and procedural — will now be bitterly, violently contested. This is very, very bad.
Do elected officials not understand that every single parent in this country -- EVERY SINGLE PARENT -- dropped their kid off at school today with terror and dread? Do they not understand how we FEEL?
Most of politics is about feelings, and we feel sick.
New polling from PCI and YouGov shows that of those who oppose impeachment, 35% oppose it solely because they are concerned it will hurt Democrats politically.
Jeff Hauser and the

PS. This “dividing the party” stuff is silly. Democratic voters are hugely unified against corporate capture of our government.

All U.S. weapons transfers are "conditional" by law, in that they cannot be transferred to countries engaged in human rights violations. If you truly believe Israel isn't committing human rights violations, you shouldn't have anything to worry about, right? So what's the problem?
Merrick Garland is pretending the DOJ has to stay “out of politics,” but the decision not to hold powerful people accountable for their crimes is a deeply political decision.
The APOLITICAL choice would be prosecution, no matter who you are, no matter how high your crimes go.
New from
@patrynard
: Elizabeth Warren announces the endorsements of over 40 current or former Iowa Republicans and Trump voters who are backing her in the Iowa Caucus
It's outrageous that the Dem establishment is caving to big money donors and moving backwards on fossil fuel subsidies.
We are in a climate emergency, and it's unimaginable that we would spend (more) billions of taxpayer dollars propping up an industry that is killing us.
NEW: The DNC quietly dropped a call to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies from its platform, telling me including the language in the first place was an "error."
Activists say the party manifesto is now weaker than what Biden and Harris campaigned on.
We can defeat the climate crisis, create 10.6 million good union jobs, and end environmental racism so working families can live with clean air and water. This is how we’ll build a country that works for everyone—not just giant polluters and fossil fuel companies.
Alternate idea: Democrats write a big climate bill that is ALL clean energy, stick in $100 million in aid for WV coal miners, and dare Manchin to vote against it.
MORE from Manchin . He says climate package will look different today than it did a couple months ago given situation w/ Russia. He's fine with big clean energy investments but wants to emphasize "all of the above" (coal, oil, gas + clean)
@nicholaswu12
Searching for a strategy to avoid a 2022 midterm disaster, Biden’s advisers have discussed elevating a unifying GOP figure that can replace the best foil the Democrats have ever been gifted — Donald Trump.
Everything that is happening now -- the massacre of civilians in Gaza, the attacks on free speech in the US, the blatant disregard for the safety and freedom of Arab-Americans -- was the stuff of my worst nightmares under Trump.
In Ames Iowa, someone asks
@ewarren
how to bring the country together. She talks about her Republican brothers, and how everyone, Republican and Democratic, wants to take on corruption. People nodding and clapping.
@MaxKennerly
"And then came the American cultural revolution of the 2020's, in which traditional practices and beliefs -- regarding bodily autonomy, privacy, and democracy itself -- were banned over the objections of 70% of Americans."
He wants to talk revolution? Let's compare...
I'm Stephanie Taylor. My mom was a medical secretary who bravely tried to organize her hospital in a right-to-work state.
I choose Warren because she believes in using power to build a habitable, healthy, safe world - one where my daughters can grow up and be brave, too.
I'm Max Kennerly, graduate of a Mississippi public school.
I've seen how our laws are warped to put the status quo above justice, the fortunate ahead of the needy, and the powerful over the weak.
I choose Warren because she sees these problems and has real solutions for them.

Corporate Democrats like Manchin and Gottheimer are the ones undermining Biden's agenda and threatening his legacy. Biden supporters should direct their ire that way.

JUST A SUGGESTION: Intense anti-Russian war fever currently dominates world politics, breaking through decades-old gridlock. Russia is a petrostate. The Dems have legislation to reduce fossil fuel usage stalled in Congress. Ride this wave RIGHT NOW, BEFORE IT PASSES.
Elizabeth Warren is the candidate that can beat Trump. She's come through trial by fire this primary -- no one else has weathered the fierce attacks that she has -- and she's still standing at the top of the polls. That should tell you something.
#AllOfUs4Warren
@BradSherman
This is not what happened, and there are multiple videos to prove it. The protestors were peaceful, and they were brutally attacked by the police. Reporters in the area said no one tried to enter the building.
The most straightforward and obvious solution to Biden's electoral woes -- stop the genocide, stop bombing and starving babies -- is the solution they simply refuse to consider.
Don’t forget we’ve been fighting Russian disinformation in the U.S. for a long time. We’ve seen how Putin controls FOX and leaders of the GOP. We've seen how he's damaged our elections.
This is a global fight for democracy, and we’re already in it.

She was the one who recognized that the way to stop Social Security cuts (back when a "Grand Bargain" was being shopped around DC) was to launch the campaign for expansion. More history here:
@ConorLambPA
The Biden administration's response here is to tie the US to a war criminal and isolate us from the world. But even if they won't listen to humanitarian arguments, we're hoping they might listen to self-preservation arguments. Biden will lose in 2024 if they don't change course.
@drvolts
I learned some politics in college and spent four years organizing unions in Appalachia, and I can speak from experience that both are valuable. What hurts "US politics" more than anything is the vacuous corruption of Democratic "centrists" and Republican extremists.
This Revolving Door Project report shows big bundling from union busting law firms for Biden, Buttigieg, and Klobuchar.
Buttigieg received donations from over 20 individuals at a single union busting law firm (and 4 of the partners maxed out).

If I was a centrist Dem strategist, I would be frantically trying to make amends with the left, with Biden's approval cratering over Gaza and 10 months before the election, but punching left is all they know how to do. It's their only move, their only muscle memory.
We need to tell a story to Americans about what government can do — and is doing — to make their lives better. It’s vital for 2022, 2024, and beyond.
Here are my recommendations on how to tell that story, at least in the executive branch. ⬇️⬇️
@jbarro
Just going to post this here, since you seem confused about who is actually responsible for the White House COVID response. (Hint: It's Jeff Zients, who is definitely not a “Warren voter,” whatever that means.)
Summer Lee, Jamie McLeod-Skinner, and John Fetterman all ran as *working-class* candidates, and being of and for the working-class as a key part of their political identities, and I think we should talk about that more as a factor in their victories.
There is so much that can be done through the executive branch -- this is how Biden could still achieve major accomplishments, even if the Senate stays under Republican control.
The dam is breaking. Now 5 Republicans on record for impeachment, including Liz Cheney, Jaime Herrera Beutler, and Fred Upton.
Now time to push Senate Republicans. Updated whip page for both Senate and House here:
@BenLaBolt
I'm genuinely confused by Biden supporters trumpeting that the NYT poll shows Biden has a narrow margin over Trump. Seems like the real point is "EVEN someone with a 33% approval can beat Trump."
@Messina2012
@NYT
Can you imagine how many down-ballot Democratic candidates would lose due to depression, low morale, and low turnout among the base? Or do you not care?
My look at how progressives have been working behind-the-scenes to influence executive branch personnel — and how it shows a new sophistication by the movement.
“Joe Biden is at a uniquely low point in his presidency, and a significant part of this, especially within the Biden coalition, is due to how Americans are viewing his foreign policy actions,” said Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt.
