Occam's razor - or the law of parsimony - re-use something known rather than create something new. That's how evolution works on a molecular level. The outcome, however, can be drastic and very novel like the wing of a bat.

For me one of the biggest unsolved questions in biology: how do different phenotypes arise and how is this related to genomic sequence, different cell types and gene regulation? We address this question in our BAT wing project.

Our first results on bat wing development are there: Single cell and genomic comparisons to mouse reveal key components of wing development. How are evolutionary adaptations encoded and how does this affect cell types?
