I don’t want to highlight this guy, but this is so disingenuous and it’s just plain gaslighting. Legends did not always remain consistent with the first 6 movies. In fact a lot of stuff was retconned by the prequels. This rosy glasses look to the past only inflames the hate.
I’ve been a defender of most of the decisions Disney has made since acquiring the Star Wars franchise, but canceling the Acolyte is not one of them. What a reactionary decision. Allow stories to be told. George Lucas would have told the story, whether people liked it or not.
So I'm probably going to catch a lot of flak from his followers for this, but I decided to watch SWT's Dark Empire fan film. I love the original comic. Cam Kennedy's artwork, the nostalgia, and the interesting glimpse it gives into the very beginnings of the EU.
@realswtheory
@UsensitiveMarks
Why? Cam Kennedy’s artwork looks a thousand times better than this in still form. You’ve taken all the heart and color out of this for some boring, gray AI slop.
If you’re going to remake something, why not make it better - not worse?
Heck, the EU wasn’t even consistent with itself. That’s not a knock on it either, I loved the EU. But pretending it was this sacred scroll of text, and in every way better than what we have now, is as I said disingenuous and gaslighting.
Let's do another Design a Wook logo contest! We want to see your artistic interpretation of the Wookieepedia logo🙂Pictured is one of the designs from the last contest we ran, created by

First on the title crawl, this word spacing is atrocious. I know it's justified text, but it looks bad. I dunno who your graphic designer is, but I had an art director who used to say "you could drive a truck thru those holes" whenever something like this popped up.
Since he mercilessly dissects every Star Wars show, I felt it would only be fair to apply that same critical look to his own work. Here are my thoughts...
One of the things I love about Star Wars is that there are "space" names for our normal everyday conveniences so I want to start a thread for some of my favorites - from Canon and Legends (and feel free to add your own!)

"Turbalance" ????
Proofreading should be done way before anything visual is created. It's also very "uncanny valley" to hear these characters talking and their eyes blinking, and their bodies moving, but their lips stay still.
This is a very simplified version of the Star Wars galaxy map I designed. Regarding the Western Reaches, are they intended to be an area that encompasses the Inner Rim/Exp Region/Mid & Outer Rim, or a fully separate area?
This voice acting is... not great. The visuals look alright here, though. I think the ships were modeled nicely. Not sure if they were built from scratch or bought from someone else, but kudos to the designer.
See how the original comic did it? This text is spaced out much better (albeit not justified type). It's pretty wordy for a title crawl, but even a truncated version would probably fill space better than what SWT did here.
Did a non-English native speaker write this? Why not just use the actual text from the comic? The ship is named Rebel Star singular, and ships are normally given a "the" in front of their name.
"I got a bad feeling about" the text and grammar of this going forward.
The screenshot of Chewie next to 3d models of Leia and Han looks so out of place. Also... maybe a period, or at least a comma, after Falcon in the subtitles?
I kinda dislike the Glup Shitto meme. I think it scared Disney off from making more reference material. I think it’s why we don’t have much details on things that appear on screen. Whereas I think everything having a backstory is one of the most endearing aspects of Star Wars.
@JimShull
Although this animated figure is impressive in its movements I have zero idea who it is or why it is important. Good storytelling requires fore knowledge of stories and characters for a ride or experience to succeed.
Seriously what is up with the written script? Did literally no one proofread this?! Just use the existing comic script. It was already written for you 20+ years ago!
For someone who routinely criticizes things as being "poorly written", the scenes that he himself wrote and added to this are literally poorly written. Both storywise and grammatically.
As someone who pores over every little detail, fact, and tidbit on every character, ship, species, etc. I can safely say that Ki-Adi-Mundi’s age does not matter. It can so easily be adjusted.
This happened CONSTANTLY in the EU. Old info was reworked and changed ALL THE TIME.
Here we have good dialogue, including the endearing nickname of Goldenrod, replaced with (an actual) poorly written line instead.
Bonus: he even forgot to put "me" after remind in the subtitles.
@tommy_stella
I think his inclusion was specifically because he would later discount Qui-Gon's Sith accusation 100 years later. It was to show that the Jedi don't, and haven't for a long time, take the Sith threat seriously. It's just an old fairy tale to them at this point in time.

Yea, it's so weird that he says they're "bringing Dark Empire to life" when the gorgeously illustrated pages have so much more life than whatever this garbage is.
My best buddy left us today. I’m thankful I could be with her in her last moments, holding her tight. I’ve never known an unconditional love as pure as hers. I love you Callie and I’ll miss you forever…
For my next "review" like I did with the Art of Episode I, I'm gonna pick out some interesting highlights from another of my favorite TPM-era books, "The Wildlife of Star Wars: A Field Guide" with beautiful art by Terryl Whitlatch, and written by Bob Carrau.
If you want to experience Dark Empire (and you should, it's the beginning of the modern era of the EU after Marvel and WEG and filled with beautiful art and concepts that come back in the sequels), I implore you to just read the comic, it's so so so much better than this.
Why would they need to "energize the repulsorlift"?
Also I know he's Canadian, so I had to look it up, but according to Google, 96% of Canadians spell it "energize". So this is probably just another typo...
Ouch, poor guy in the middle with both of his ankles broken. Also others have pointed out the super weird proportions on everyone in this scene.
@SleepySavior
I know you got yourself blocked over this one lol
What is up with Han's eyes here? Also I guess he added this bit in so that Leia could be shown feeling their deaths through the Force. Oh, I'm sorry, the force. Just a non-specific uncapitalized force.

@jordenfrankell
No the guy does hate LGBT people. He said in another tweet that they’re evil and soulless. Ugh. I reported him a bunch of times, but who knows with Elon in charge.
Besides all the typos, lack of punctuation and capitalization, and odd sentence structure, it's just boring and lifeless. He took out some of the fun dialogue and replaced it with... blah.
@JapanFan65
@SCentralized
There was a lot of hate. A lot. Only now are they remembered fondly, especially by kids who were young at the time they watched. But there were a lot of teenage and adult “fans” who dedicated their entire online persona to hating the prequels (hmm sounds very familiar 🤔)
@STAI2GAZER
They see a female lead protagonist and a black guy and it’s “woke”. We know what they mean. Remember how mad they got when Finn just appeared in the trailer before TFA even released?
I don't know why this guy has to tell Han that the Rebel Star was destroyed. In the comic, they are already out of hyperspace when the Rebel Star is destroyed and Leia reiterates it to Han.
And honestly, what was the point of the "mutinist" stormtroopers, the random Rodian piloting an AT-AT... like why are they there and what did they add?
Yea none of this happens. They actually fly right into the ground combat in the comic. It's done much better there. This weird little interlude serves zero purpose. Just follow the existing story.
So... the TIEs spot a YT freighter and tell them it's an Imperial warzone and to leave immediately... despite one of the Empire's most wanted being the captain of a YT... and then they just fly away? Lol
@SCentralized
Boy, I just can’t figure out why. I guess we’ll just never know, man. Just one of those mysteries, bro. Well I gotta go check my male, I mean, mail!
What survivors? Leia just said there were none. This is handled better in the comic, where it's made clear they are going to Coruscant to look for survivors.
Yea... I don't think i'll be watching Part 2. Part 1 was hard enough. There were a handful of good things - some of the visuals and animation, music, sound effects. But just so much was off.
Hey

My name is Shane and I’m the guy behind SW5W. I’m a graphic designer, and have been a SW fan since I was 10, after first seeing a rerun of the OT with my mom on tv in 1995. I love the minutiae of Star Wars, along with the art and design and world building.
This target screen animation looks really nice (albeit a little plain). And since there's Aurebesh on the screen, I have to translate it... and it says... F*ck Sh*t Up. Somehow I don't think that would make it into a Lucas release...
What is this?!?! Wedge's lips moved with his voice! And the image is so much smoother and clearer. There's depth of field. What is going on here, lol?? It's like these two scenes are from a totally different (and better) fan film.
@DankFerrick
I love Saw Gerrera. Love that he straddles the line between hero and villain. His story is tragic and his history has shaped him in ways that other characters weren’t in the Clone Wars. He’s the opposite of the heroics of Anakin and Ahsoka.
Hey Lego Star Wars fans, are there any other characters and droids that first appeared in Lego form (excluding tv shows like the Freemakers, etc.)?
The only one I know of offhand is R2-R7 who first appeared in the Republic Cruiser set way back in 2007.
This short sequence feels so out of place, there's actual human movement here of the stormtrooper getting shot and falling. It actually feels real and fluid. Where was that for every single other scene??
(Over the last ten days I was on my honeymoon where we went to, among other places, Batuu! So here's a special honeymoon version of Star Wars 5W.)
