T-permit bird ringer. Open to collaborations 🦉🦅🧬
The face of a girl who had an albatross fly in front of her three times! Absolutely incredible to see the bird at head height. A moment I'll never forget 🖤🤍
It's official! I hated school, did badly at A Levels and felt way to stupid to go to university. However, it's just been confirmed I have a obtained a First Class Honours in BSc(Hons) Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Science! Always choose a course your passionate about 🎓
Just a dream come true.
My friends call me the crazy kingfisher lady because I'm obsessed with them.
Today at Slimbridge CES, my dream of seeing one up close came true TWICE! I have dreamed of this day for years and can't believe how amazing they are. Luckiest girl alive I am!
CALLING ALL FEMALE WILDLIFE WARRIORS IN THE UK!
I have set up a discord chat for women to discuss birds, wildlife and hopefully to find local people to go out birding with! It's a safe space for us after recent events. If anyone wants to join please dm me!
Not something you see outside your office on campus everyday! Around 20 waxwing feeding at Newcastle Uni. I feel a petition to get more rowan trees planted coming on!
Feel like the luckiest birder in the UK today! I was scheduled to go to Coquet Island as a volunteer on the same day as the Brideled Tern! Had incredible views this morning. Topped off a perfect birding weekend with 3 lifers (Cinnamon Teal and American Black Tern).
Of course I couldn't resist taking my camera into work yesterday! Just an amazing moment watching the waxwing feeding in the middle of a busy uni. A highlight was finding a colour-ring bird which I've reported!
Last night was magical. My first nightjars, saw woodcock & heard ~5 Long eared owls, seeing 2. Then driving away, in the same area as the LEOs, I found 4 SEOs in the road! An unforgettable British wildlife encounter 😁

620 dunlin and 24 redshanks in today's net catch! Managed to ring 40 birds in total. Came home to mark some undergrad papers. Classic Saturday for a 50, I mean 24 year old ☺️
Today I got my 1st 200 British species year! Thanks to the gorgeous Whooper swans (I swear they're there) and 201 long tailed duck! So glad I got to experience it with birdy friends. I definitely feel a lot more confident in my bird ID'ing skills these days!
Okay... living in the North East of England is really paying off... Probably the rarest bird in Britain I'll ever see! Can't believe my luck that I was an hour from the first ever UK record of a grey headed lapwing. Very special.
An academic highlight is teaching on the Bird ID undergrad course. This year they were fantastic and it felt like a success when I overheard "from now on, when I see a bird, I'll try and ID it", and to find out a student bought a pair of binoculars after the course 😁🦅🦆🦢🦉
This morning I went looking for an otter in Stroud but to no avail... This evening I tried again and it happened! I finally saw my first otter! It was happily swimming, diving and hunting about 2m away from me in a town. Absolutely magical.
An incredible 10 days in Scotland. From Ospreys to Beavers, to 4 days on an uninhabited island ringing, all in a cosy 3 man tent with my best friends. Here are the highlights!
1. Ospreys flying over our head and my first ever Otter!
Thanks to the
@_BTO
seabird ringing grant I spent the day with the Lothian Ringing Group on Craigleith! It was incredible ringing puffins and Razorbills. Seabird research is crucial for their conservation, especially in recent times. Make sure to apply next year! (Licenced)
After receiving funded studentships for 4 out of 5 of my PhD applications you can imagine I had a lot of thinking to do! I have accepted a place at

Perfect birding weekend:
Fri: counting BHG nests, seen 1st roseate terns of the year.
Sat: 73 passerine nest boxes checked, first pulli ringed and lifer: temmincks stint.
Sun: ringing then a 30 min drive to see the Indigo Bunting and Red Backed Shrike. Both lifers! Luckiest girl!
What a weekend with
@Dan_nesbit13
. 4 lifers: grey partridge, black redstart, Richardson's cackling goose and this stunning bluethroat that showed incredibly well. Also saw a tawny owl, first swallows and sand martins of the year! Very happy girly 😊
@Sela
Just a reminder that's it's illegal to disturb nesting birds. Can you prove how the nesting kittiwakes will not be disturbed when you're shining these bright lights with loud music on them?
Ian was absolutely fantastic on
#HIGNFY
. Absolutely tore into
#DominicCummnings
showing what a twat he truly is.
@BorisJohnson
has shown to be a weak and feeble man by not firing. I have no respect for you or your rules. Now excuse me while I drive to the beach to test my eyes.
Between the world burning and Avian Influenza, things are pretty bleak at the moment. But for an hour this afternoon life was good because I met Ducky. A rescued mallard duckling. Please enjoy this brief moment of wholesomeness.
The

albatross at sunrise. This morning it perched within 10m on the cliff but of course my camera is broken (I will accept a

R7 if anyone wants to give me one 😉) Absolutely unforgettable. Bempton is so unbelievably special.
More on my insta 😊
What a weekend. Went bird ringing both days (under supervision). First day rang 2 dunlin and 2 turnstone. Today 13 oyster catchers! Cannot stop smiling ☺️
153 bird species this year which I'm happy with considering I just look for birds wherever I am. Finished off 2021
@WWTSlimbridge
where I managed to capture their logo 😂 I'll be back first thing so see if 2022 will be the year I see a cattle egret!
#TwitterNatureCommunity
If over qualified people are applying for entry level jobs, how are entry level conservationists supposed to get a job in an already saturated market? How do I become overqualified so I can apply for a £17,000 a year job? The mind boggles...
I have finally graduated with an MScRes in Biological Science from Bangor University. Bangor was the best year of my life in terms of improving my academic and personal skills. I'll never underestimate the importance of having a supportive lab group. Thank you to everyone 🏴
Absolutely fallen in love with bird ringing. Ive had 5 sessions now, rung 91 birds of 13 species. Two of today's highlights, a male great spotted woodpecker, although he already had a ring, and a lovely long tailed Tit!
Amazing day in the FoD. Nagshead: firecrest, breeding pair of pied flycatchers, redstarts and a mandarin duck. Finished off trying to attach GPS tags to tree pipits but only caught a dunnock. Did however find the most perfect little tree pipit nest!

@ChrisGPackham
I love how comfortable urban foxes are being photographed. This stunning individual was eating a builders ham and cheese sandwich in Bristol.
#FoxOfTheDay
First time visiting Weston Airfield and it didn't disappoint! Stunning views of penduline tits and kingfishers chasing each other, kestrels, sparrowhawks and snipe! What a fantastic day!
Had a great weekend in Norfolk collecting pond sediment cores for my PhD. Now looking forward to the next few months analysising the cores so that eventually I can look for eDNA to understand how the species have changed over the years and why! 🧬🦝🦆🐟🦟
Another amazing weekend ringing. Over 400 oystercatchers caught. Can't believe how lucky we were with the weather. First photo is the sunrise, second is the sunset 🌕☀️
It may have been very faint and lasted only 15 minutes. I may have still waited an hour just in case it returned and now can't feel me feet as it's -15C but I just saw the Aurora Borealis! It was like giant ghosts walking through the stars. Feel so lucky. (I am smiling promise)
2022: the most incredible year. 187 UK birds, with the albatross a highlight. I had the time of my life in Bangor, making friends while in the mountains and on the beaches, I became a ringer & accepted my dream PhD in Newcastle. Thanks to everyone who made it special.
I'm so glad you can't smell this photo 😂
It was a privilege to ring on Puffin Island yesterday. Being able to directly contribute to Science on a species that I love is so amazing, and definitely worth the shit storm! 4 new species ringed; shag, guillemot, razorbills and PUFFIN!
Could not believe my eyes when wondering around Umea University's campus that waxwings where everywhere! We've had 6 days of non-stop snow, coupled with with few hours of low sunlight meant photography was a nightmare but I'm happy I got some waxwing shots!
Go to the Farne Isles they said... It'll be fun they said...
Actually. It was. Would gladly get attacked by Arctic Terns all day despite what the face looks like 😂
Shout out to
@MollyWa89852480
who volunteered to come and stand in the cold and count gulls on Saturday as part of the
@_BTO

in Whitley Bay. It was pretty quiet until near sunset when two huge roosts of >800 Herring gull formed. No other species were seen in the roost 🤔
My bat survey last night: a hen harrier! A barn owl circling 4m in front of me at head height, a badger running in the road and a shooting star! Only problem was the peace disturbed an occasional gunshot bringing everything back to reality. Hope the harriers were alright 😔
I managed to survive my first week as a PhD candidate!
@UniofNewcastle
has been so welcoming and I'm settling in nicely. Also had an exciting chat with
@WWTworldwide
about my project and fingers crossed I'll be fulfilling my dream of making an impact in wetland conservation soon.
Back from a few days getaway in Tromsø, Norway. Turns out I really love arctic climates. Saw the Aurora but only very briefly and on the last night it wasn't that strong. Managed to get some birding in, highlights were king eider and white tailed eagles!
I'm not usually a fan of wildlife documentaries (weird I know) but watching
#WildIsles
makes me proud of our wildlife. Not enough people know how incredible it is and it's so important to showcase it. It makes me reflect on what an incredible wild life I've led.
Can someone explain to me why the day after I finish at Slimbridge a glossy ibis, blue throat, and a Marsh tit decide to show up? Oh and the spoonbill I've been wanting to see for weeks shows nicely. Oh... And a cattle egret which I've wanted to see for years! Birds.... 🙄
Feeling lost. Covid has ruined my masters project and I can't find anything else suitable. Everything feels rushed. If anyone has a conservation based role anywhere please let me know. Especially to do with birds, pangolins, endangered species eDNA & monitoring.
The Glossy Ibis. Not a bird I was expecting to see today! Went to slimbridge to try and see cattle egrets. Of course, I saw none. And now I have seen on Twitter there are 10 in the field I walked to to check 😂 cannot be disappointed though look at this bird!
Had a great start to the day yesterday doing our
@BBS_birds
. Despite being in a residential area, we had blackcaps, chiffchaffs, and the highlights... swifts! Birds really are everywhere if you look for them. Finished the survey with a pastry before work 😋
@_BTO
@RSPBEngland
I'm looking to get my own ringing pliers. If anyone knows any for sale up to 7mm and over 7mm please let me know! Here's a stunning tawny I ringed under licence.
@_BTO
Great day with SCAN ringing group on Anglesey today catching Dunlin. Good catch included 4 Swedish, 1 Norwegian & 1 Polish control. Polish control in photo.
Got sent of the safari
@slimbridge_wild
for my last day. Saw a BITTERN on the sea wall, a hobby, kestrel, and a lifer for me a Marsh Harrier! And a grass snake. I'm going to miss this place so much!
My time in NW has ended. It was the best year of my life and devastated is an understatement. Thank you to everyone who made it special, especially
@SiCreerProf
for giving me the chance to conduct my MScRes. Now for a week off before starting my PhD in Newcastle. Diolch Bangor 🏴
Just like that the Aurora Borealis season is off with a bang! Got there just in time to enjoy the lights off St. Mary's lighthouse. First time seeing them in the UK with this winter set to be the best for lights for 11 years as the sun begins a new cycle next year!
It was great to attend the North East Ringers Conference today. The projects going on are so interesting and it's really got me hyped for this year! It was nice to catch up with familiar faces and so nice to meet new people!
Just like that my last ringing session with SCAN while living in Wales is done! Awesome catch with
@r_green24
. Every cannon catch I went to was successful and 12 wader/sea species ringed. It's fascinating science. Hopefully Newcastle will have some exciting opportunities for me.
It was great to help
@Au_Erithacus
with a ringing demonstration today. Way more birds than anticipated! Heres a video with permission, of the release of a family of blue tits. Public engagement is so important and so rewarding! Hopefully we've inspired a new generation 😊
Fantastic day exploring two nature reserves on Anglesey today. Saw a Marsh Harrier at RSPB Cors Ddyga and then popped over to The Dingle only to be surrounded by these super fast beauties!
Im so fortunate that my parents live near Daneway Banks which was featured on
#WildIsles
. I don't underestimate how lucky I am to see Large Blues. Especially mating ones!
Amazing day
@RSPBNewport
. ~20 reed buntings and chiffchaff hunting the newly emerged insects. Chiffchaffs singing, goldcrest, redpolls, Curlews, siskins, honey bees buzzing in the hive, brimstones, finished off with a cool drink at the cafe watching two kingfishers. Bliss 😊
What a wild year. 203 species recorded on
@birda_org
though the GH Lapwing isn't on the app so it's 204. The best birding year ever! Highlights were the owl/nightjar experience, standing in a moonlit sea catching terns and Costa Rica. 2023, the year I become a confident birder.
Was the only guest in the hotel last night (not even any staff) and very little life today. Highlight was a BOP which flew in front of the bus as I was leaving so I didn't see what it was 😂 Sweden is absolutely stunning. Ginger beer time me thinks!
Amazing weekend with
@jelaine_gan
. 83 bird species in total including 2 lifers: 8 Grey phalarope & a red necked grebe. Other highlights were firecrest, brambling and a hedgehog!
Taking every opportunity I get to spend time with these beautiful animals. After a tough week I'm always able to pick myself up because of the joy nature brings me ☺️
5 minutes after arriving at our camping spot for the night I saw my first ever ring ouzel! What a way to start two weeks motorhoming around Scotland.

Wetlands are vital not only to protect us from disasters like flooding, but they're also the most effective carbon sinks on the planet. I was lucky to talk about wetlands and wildlife at
@WWTSlimbridge
last summer. Have you visited your local wetland?
It was nice to get back from holiday to find this in the letterbox!
My photo of the little owl "Owlfred" is the front cover of
@TheLocalAnswer
this month! It's a huge compliment to get any recognition, let alone knowing all of Stroud gets to see my picture 😊
#bbcspringwatch
Visited
@WWTLlanelli
today and its stunning! The wooded landscape so close to an estuary made for a really lovely environment. Highlights were first pectoral sandpiper of the year and seeing black-tailed godwits so close to the hide! Would definitely recommend a visit.
Standing outside the dentists waiting to go in, I decided to check Twitter. My feed is filled with people seeing swiftfs for the first time this year. Feeling envious I looked up wishing I could see one and as I did one flew overhead. So I can finally say THE SWIFTS ARE BACK!!!
Amazing day at NNR Westhay Moor and
@RSPBHamWall
. 47 species in total. Highlights were 3 glossy ibis, ~100 cattle egret, Marsh Harriers, 2 sparrow hawks,water rails and a kingfisher. Perfect dawn, completely still and blue skies before the rain. Year list is at 81.
Amazing day at Gosforth NR. Highlights were Whooper, fantastic kingy views, water rail and Sparrow hawk. Was a surprise to see parakeets though... Not good. Here are a couple of piccys 😊
Amazing morning at
@Natures_Voice
Geltsdale. Arrived at dawn to black grouse by the car park. Other highlights were a smew, pink footed geese and my first wheatears of the year. What a hidden gem of a reserve!
I saw a Cuckoo!! Thank you to everyone who told me places to look... The winning location was Coombe Hill! I also saw a hare which was incredible along with a yellow wagtail. Avocets, lapwings, herons, mute swans and a lot of warblers. Thank you everyone!

Back from the
