Hi folks, I hate to say it, but I really need help funding the last part of my service dog's mobility training to mitigate the bone syndrome that dislocates my knees. If you have any funds to spare or time to share the GoFundMe, I'd be much obliged 💚🐕🦺
I recently met a woman who bought a house in DC next to her best friend and knocked down the brick wall between their back yards to just share the space. They garden together, let their dogs play, have nighttime martinis on the patio and then go back to their own houses. Amazing.
As someone filing taxes first the first time as a homeowner, I just want it to be known that it is absolute bullshit that my mortgage interest is a deduction but none of my rent ever was.
.
@ArguablyTrue
just spotted
@BarackObama
and
@JoeBiden
in Georgetown's Dog Tag Bakery. Not pictured: a ton of secret service officials.
I wonder what a former POTUS and VP discuss over pastries: Maybe a crumbling DNC? Or Metro shutdowns? 🤔
And yes, homeownership comes with costs that renting doesn't, blah, blah, blah. Doesn't change the fact that this deduction setup massively priveleges the people who can afford to own property.
@unormal
The last time I stayed in a barn AirBnB it actually did catch fire bc the wiring was so faulty. I could smell the burning rubber and woke everyone up even tho they didn't believe me! When the fire crew showed up, they said "oh, not this place again" 😬
Met Robert in downtown DC today and he gave me permission to share this. He lost his HVAC job during COVID and needs help finding new work. Says he has a CFC cert and exp. doing plumbing, electrical, and carpentry. He also said he has safe housing in NE but needs food.
DC people: dating is so hard I'm so tired of it
Date: *matches*
DC people: OMG you're everything I've been looking for 😍
Date: there's a new bar near my house. Want to try it together?
DC people: YESSS 🥰 I'm available now ☺😚
Date: cool I'm in Clarendon
DC people:
So uh, personal news time?
My partner and I separated and today I moved to Petworth where I bought a lil condo. Hopeful for new beginnings and the chance to stay in DC even as *gestures broadly* is going on. Big thanks to everyone who helped along the way 🧡
Yesterday my buddy here noticed I haven't been eating very much. So he gobbled up a bunch of kibble, jumped up next to me, nudged me to my attention, then gently vomited it next to my head.
👋 Today I'll be following the
#MarchOnWashington2020
taking photos and interviewing people just for the sake of sharing stories. Come say hi if you see me and make fun of my baby mullet!
@oldenoughtosay
I've always thought school buses should use corigs or border collies to herd the kids onto the bus at each stop and check for stragglers. They love kids and love to herd them til they drop 🤣
Paid off my last student loan today after graduating with my Bachelors in 2015 w/$46,000-ish in private & federal loans.
I thought this day would feel good. It does not!
Student loans are a scam. You need luck and privilege waaaay more than you need hard work to pay them off.
@TinaG_SD
My mortgage is around $180k. My medical expenses, however, were north of $12k which blasted me past the standard deduction. Disabled people exist man.
Tonight I met an unemployed violinist in the pet store parking lot playing Mozart to raise money for his three kids, and when I asked how I could help he and his wife said they just needed baby formula. This country is a joke.
I would love nothing more than to stay in DC and make a life here but I also know I cannot afford it for much longer. It's been interesting to reflect on this fact over the years and how it's informed my reporting.
I started dating a wonderful person last year who also was a straight shot from me on the yellow line! Until, you know, the YL closed 😄 To say the dog and I are excited to have it back up and running would be an understatement! Great work
@wmata
So the
@WaPoExpress
staff not only put out the damn paper the same day they were axed, they made it thicker than ever and included an entire fall arts guide
brb gently weeping on the Metro
News tips: an r/washingtondc user just shared a rough story about
@OUC_DC
putting them on hold for *15 min* today. Worth vetting because if true, that hold time is insane.
@STATter911
Some small Pride-related personal news 👉👈
Most of you know I've been working to rename myself since I came out as bi a few years ago.
So I'm happy to announce that I am now (finally lol) filing the legal paperwork! My new name is Sloane Airey and my pronouns are she/they! 🎆
I want to write about how looking for love in all the wrong people in D.C. led me to...fall in love with DC itself? Somehow in the midst of some truly, truly terrible dates, I explored so many places and bumbled my way into community?? If you know where I should pitch this, lmk.
AU and WAMU gross mismanagement is far from new (remember how they protected serial sexual harasser Ma*tin D* C*ro), but giving embargoed interviews about shuttering a whole newsroom before you tell the staff, or make a plan to even archive the fucking stories, is so low.
Martin's a great writer. But he's a great journalist bc he really cares about people, even when it's hard.
When I came forward about his friend & former colleague harassing me, he believed me. And he believed the other woman after me. He's a special guy and he'll be missed.
And, with that, I'm done at
@wamu885
/
@dcist
. It's been the honor of a lifetime, and I'll miss it a ton. Thanks for listening, reading, and engaging! My colleagues remain the greatest, and I'm excited to see the impactful work they'll continue to produce.
Lol a Washington correspondent for the Netherlands is tweeting an explanation of D.C. brunch to his Dutch followers, explaining the concept of bottomless drinks and that there are lots of loud drunk people out today.
Brunchen is erg populair in DC. Het is vaak een excuus om snel dronken te worden van 'botomless' (onbeperkt bijgevulde) mimosa's. Heel wat luidruchtige en zwalkende mensen in de stad rond dit tijdstip.
You know it's almost like have a free daily newspaper hawked at Metro stations would be a great way to cut through disinformation about a pandemic, reach people who aren't online and don't subscribe to other news & give them public transit specific safety info 🤷♀️
Saw a guy somersault off the bus, which I assumed was because he was drunk? But then he turned around, ran back on the bus, and did it again?? Never change, X2 😂
Imagine having this much contempt -- and no curiosity -- about the people who cook for you, drive you, pour your drinks, keep your roads safe, house your staff, defined whole genres of music, fought for civil rights, and pay your salary.
Wisconsin Rep Glenn Grothman (R): "D.C. is not a state, it is a city ... It's a govt town with a little bit of tourism connected to the buildings." Grothman gets the biggest response so far from the crowd, which doesn't sound too happy with his remarks
Holy shit guys I just got a free ticket to go see
@lizzo
tomorrow.
I went on a midnight walk to return some overdue library books (sorry
@dcpl
!) and stopped to take a photo of two ladies getting out of tonight's concert. They thanked me with a ticket??
Fucking love Southwest 🧡
Happy Monday to everyone but especially this service dog taking
#wmata
home looking like he can't wait to tell his wife what Janice in accounting did today.
Newsroom leaders need to recognize that many of their employees (myself included) have only been able to pursue journalism because of the abortions we've had. These health care decisions are not separate from our careers, they are integral to them.
📢 Attention: I'm writing a story about people asking local DC, MD, and VA officials to shut down streets during
#Covid_19
for pedestrians. 📢
Do you want a street closed? Comment or DM me about it!
And what was the response if you already asked your local officials?
Solidarity to everyone at the Washingtonion today ✊ Merrill has done some truly wild things before, but threatening to intentionally misclassify workers as contractors in a Washington Post op-ed was truly another level of 'fuck around a find out'
As members of the Washingtonian editorial staff, we want our CEO to understand the risks of not valuing our labor. We are dismayed by Cathy Merrill’s public threat to our livelihoods. We will not be publishing today.
This week I vetted 12 anonymous tips, wrote 17 articles, officially passing 300 articles since I was hired in March.
Together the stories generated 60,000 unique page views, were picked up by 5 other outlets, generated tips for 4 more stories & saved 1 woman's dress!
Nothing like going back to the office for the first time in over a year and the only thing on your desk in the dark, empty building is this 😭 real zombie apocalypse vibes folks
Hi! 👋 Like you, I've been watching the reporting about the protests and I have questions.
I want to know every department that sent law enforcement or military officers to DC. I want to know when and why, & their level of training.
To do this, I need your help 👇
On the bright side, I was able to take a grocery list by using Google translate and buy them a bunch of stuff. And when the oldest kid (4?) saw I nabbed her some fruit rollups she yelled "delicious!" and tore into those bad boys like a champ 💪
*ahem* Starting today I'll officially be chasing down investigative (and feature) articles here in the D.C. area (and beyond) as a freelancer!
Feel free to DM me with tips, pitches, and comments! People can also reach me at: airey at protonmail dot com.
Here is a wild read of some of the worst dates I've had in the DMV and what I learned along the way! Big thanks to
@730dc
for publishing and everyone on here for being interested.
Cw: suicide

Classic D.C./Arlington dating divide story I just overheard:
Woman: are you sure there wasn't anything else you could do to make it work between you two?
Man: I did everything! I took Ubers all the way to Arlington!
Every day my boyfriend makes tea and holds the cat outside for a few minutes while it brews. Nightlight loves it bc he gets to watch all the birds and the park dogs.
Today he saw snow, and did not like it 😭
I'm thrilled to share that
@SPJDC
has selected my reporting for
@DCist
on why the District’s investment in new firetrucks and a repair shop was more than just a budget line item as a finalist for a Dateline award.
Here
#metro
is scolding people who are taking the bus during
#COVID
.
Lower income people are more likely to ride
#wmata
buses over rail, & are more likely to be janitors & grocery store workers -- jobs deemed "essential" right now.
How are they supposed to get to work
@wmata
?
#DMV
! Wednesday was another good day for

+ common good + shared sacrifice:
RAIL: ⬇84%. ONLY 110K Y/Y. 👏👏👏BRAVO!
BUS: ⬇63%. 👎Work to do. ESSENTIAL trips only, please.
Let's keep limited Metro space avail for those who need it.
#wmata
I feel very strongly that I'm going to be killed trying to bike across N Lynn Street to get on the Key Bridge.
How is forcing cyclist and pedestrians on the Custis to battle right-turning traffic from Lee Highway not a death trap?
Let us all lend our thoughts to prayers to friends and Tinder matches in Arlington who actually believe people will be crossing the river for them after this is over
Every time I think I should get back into news full time, I log into twitter and see another mass layoff of award-winning talented folks, another outlet closing and wiping the CMS for good. I think I've genuinely lost what hope I have left for news.
Some bittersweet personal news to share tonight folks.
I'm moving out of DC at the end of the month for greener pastures in Arlington. Still in love with the District but the rent is too damn high 💔
What D.C. things should I add to my bucket list to do before I leave??
Neighbors in Petworth found a big friendly malamute mix with no tags or collar. We called Animal Control but please share to help find the owne!
@PoPville
@mljjCarr
Oh wow that is really special. Thank you for sharing! If you would have any interest in sharing the story for a wider audience, I'd love to ask you some more questions for a news story
Hello, I am struggling with a lot of depression this week and completing two important tasks which ofc...worsens the depression lol. Anybody got tips? (Or pet pix?)
It's funny to me how some news orgs believe they can hire 'brave journalists' to 'speak truth to power' who also have never wrestled injustice in their own lives or communities bc that would be...a conflict of interest?
Where do you think our urge to check power comes from?? 😭
Many women filled my DMs with their stories after I shared mine, turning these last few weeks a pretty emotional experience.
I'm grateful for all of them, and for the fine work Rachel did reporting this article.
I read further then I thought I would before I started crying
Allegations against DC reporter Martin Di Caro depict a clear pattern of inappropriate behavior toward female journalists, govt comms pros, & transpo advocates. What did people in power know & what, if anything, did they do about it? My latest:
One time I was going through airport security the scanner showed metal over my lower stomach
Me: That's weird. Is that my IUD?
TSA agent: 😲
Me: No! IUD! I.U.D!
TSA Agent: *slowly backing away* uh-huh and what's that?
Me: an intrauterine device, not a bomb!
TSA: 🤨
Took myself out on a DC date night to a
@capitalfringe
show, walked to
@chbooksdc
to buy some trashy fantasy adventure novels, grabbed a snack at
@TheWharfDC
, and then dragged my leather arm chair onto the porch for reading and Perrier sipping.
What a perfect, beautiful night.
There's been lots of ink spilled on the D.C. crime lab, but
@AlexKomaWCP
and I dug into something that's been forgotten: a multi-year, multi-million-dollar promise to retest crime evidence.
Thanks to

Today’s bread 🍞 is going to
@howisthatlegal
, who was nominated in several tweets that highlighted how she is community oriented, hard-working, and selfless.
A friend of mine was just murdered in an apparently random attack, right before he was about to announce his engagement. So this is your reminder to ring up old friends just to say you miss them, to go pursue that thing you enjoy, and to tell your person you love them.
Good morning here is a peep diorama of the college admissions scandal showing Lori Loughlin Peep handing cash (made of felt) to a USC official while FBI agents approach and her daughter takes a selfie on the row boat.
Thank you

Tonight marks my 1 year anniversary
@WashTimesLocal
As the only Metro reporter, hundreds of you spoke to me for a collective 220 stories, 7 for A1. Thank you! I hope to meet even more of you in the next 12 months!
For now, here's me celebrating all the gray hair I got, too 😅
