It is almost impossible to detect subtle coercion - this important evidence from Canada’s implementation of MAID, shows the clear (and frankly dangerous) implications for vulnerable people, who may feel like a burden. We need ‘assisted living’ not state sanctioned suicide.
Prof Laura Hoyano highlights a troubling statistic about coercion: In Canada in 2023, there were 41 cases where doctors determined the person had not made a voluntary request for assisted suicide/euthanasia without external pressure.
