A close family member worked at times alongside Mr Raab (not as a civil servant I hasten to add). I’m told he was a consummate professional, intense and demanding, yes, but never a bully. He expected those around him to do their jobs, and do them well. He didn’t suffer fools.

We have many Nepalese in our town, mostly families of ex and current Gurkhas. Beautiful people. The medals on display on armistice day are a sight to behold. And such humble, good people. They bring a wealth of honour and loyalty to us.

I was in Aldi a few days ago. A shoplifter tried to exit by the entrance door. It wouldn’t open and the alarm sounded. She dropped the basket and climbed over the barrier to the exit. Some 8 staff ran to the door to try to stop her but she ran to a waiting car. Hats off to Aldi!

Went into town today - Ashford, Kent. I couldn’t believe how many migrant men, mostly young, walking around in their native gear. I actually wondered if today was a special day. On the drive home I saw another 6 or 7 in full native gear (sorry don’t know what it’s called).
