Nollywood filmmakers are often quick to attach the we-made magic tag to every film. But history has shown repeatedly that there's nothing magical about these productions. For me, With Difficulty Comes Ease is the sole film worth that tag this year.

I hope Ifeoma Nkiruka Chukwuogo, the director of Bariga Sugar, knows she directed one of the best Nigerian short films ever. I hope she is PROUD. Also, Halimat Olarenwaju is such a natural. She reminds me of Moustapha Oumarou from Adu.

Here we are. I attended the premiere yesterday and I have some thoughts 1. Kehinde Bankole is fine. And the cinematographer makes it his/her duty to reiterate this whenever she appears on screen. 2. Prior to Adire, I don't watch Lizzy's acting with fondness. But her acting..

One thing I'm loving about Ripley(showing on Netflix) is how the camera keeps reiterating how alone Tom Ripley is. Those long shots have meaning.

Tambay Obenson's tweet always reminded me that being a critic isn't just about watching and reviewing films; the need to understand the social, and economical aspects of the " industry" is also " importanter"

Also, curious how Nigerian film journalists feel about this response: "There’s no place called Nollywood. It has no geographical borders." Etc...

@KaizenKreativ_ but more seriously how can you make a nollywood film poster with no cast on it? who is this supposed to appeal to? how can marketing put that on a brt bus or on the back of a tricycle?

One of the few things I'm good at doing is stalking a filmmaker I intend to interview. I obsessively read ALL their tweets and scan through their IG posts. I still don't know why I do this. Maybe I know why sha.

For weeks, I have been ranting about the "unavailability" of queer African films. Not that these films don’t exist, but being in Africa, except if you're using VPN or so, it’s often impossible to watch these queer African films. I wrote about it here for @afrocritik

"Random" thought: I think there is an ongoing competition amongst mainstream Nollywood filmmakers of who write, direct and produce the most drossy and obtuse films and TV series. Everyone seems to be pursing the top spot. And it's annoying.

There is a sense of rhythm that Kelechi Udegbe brings to his performance. Like a flowing river, he knows when to alternate seamlessly and move from one mood to another - from a calm to a turbulent river. Check the trailer for Mami Wata and same pattern is there.

🎉 Fun Fact: This short film was shot to celebrate Kelechi's birthday last year and address Birthday Depression. While performing, Kelechi went completely off script, and the character became an outlet for him to vent all his frustration, which made him shed real tears during the

This paragraph captures the intention that influenced the writing of this essay. While I'm credited as the writer of the essay, it was really @Ebukah_Nzeji who wrote this piece. He graciously provided me with information and guidance when I was stuck.

The more films you watch the more film you discovered. @TambayObenson tweeting about African cinema piqued my interest in choosing Nollywood and African film as my niche as a film critic. Next year is a total commitment to that course.
