Here we go for a full account of the terrible accident that occured to a student in my lab. Please RT and disseminate to alert.

Safety First: A Recent Case of a Dichloromethane Injection Injury

Former PhD student just got a full time job (actually 2) just after defending.
Student got falsely accused of fraud by PI and wanted to quit. I stood up with her and confronted the PI who resigned as advisor.
This job is the best proof of quality for this student.

Dear community, i am looking for an outstanding Postdoctoral Researcher candidate to work on perovskites! Prior experience on perovskite characterization and/or photovoltaics is necessary. The project will be about ion migration and stability. PM or email pls. Spread the word!
So this is dichloromethane.
It got purple immediately then necrosis. Heat in the finger and nerve affected.
Got surgery within 2hr in ER.
Self skin graft from his arm.
3 month recover.
Quite ok now.
That was a huge shock for me.
Will send a picture of graft tomorrow
Sodium azide is a nasty yet common chemical reagent.
BUT
DO NOT use metallic spatula when weighing 💥, use plastic tea spoon for instance.
DO NOT use in dichloromethane 💥.
Avoud any acidic media to prévention HN3 as a neurotoxic gas 💀☠.
#SafetyFirst
Don't store sodium azide waste in a former diethyl ether aluminum bottle. Thankfully no one was hurt and nothing was damaged but this was quite an alarming bang.
@Chemjobber
Here the finger after 4 or 5 days.
Surgeon had to remove dead flesh and self-graft was needed To reconstruct. Nerve was 90% damaged and regeneration was slow but nearly 70% ok now after 8 months.
Painkillers did not help after 10 days and lots of rough night for him
OH boy, paper accepted in
@ChemicalScience
That is a first for me !!!
So grateful to Dr Lei Dong who lead this project in close collaboration with Dr Xiao-Peng He (ECUST Shanghai).
Long paper in the making due to COVID situation.

Dear [colleague],
I will not reply favorably to your generous invitation because I am not comfortable in publishing myself in MDPI journals and moreover trillions of special issues. Sorry about that [colleague], the topic is great but I don’t want to be part of it.
Sebastien
This is really to alert everyone about simply injecting DCM in a flask which turned in almost loosing a finger if surgery was done too late.
This must be RT RT RT RT RT
Holy cow,

Morten Meldal well deserved
Barry Sharpless in History with 2 Nobel Prize
Such an important topic for chemical biology and applications in life sciences
BRAVO !!!!
This. Is. Toxic.
When I give corrections to a PhD student for his/her thesis manuscript, I systematically spend 2-3h with him/her to explain every correction I made.
Systematically.
Always.
Every time.
Otherwise these corrections arent worth it.
Epidémie après épidémie, les ports jouent un rôle dans la circulation des virus : nous présentons, dans un preprint de ce jour, le premier variant dit "indien" diagnostiqué à Marseille.

Thank you

for this opportunity to explain the situation and for your support.
Thanks Louisa for the writing.

Celebrating today 50 rotations around the globe
So much accomplished, and so far so good
✅️ Health OK
✅️ Great family
✅️ Fun colleagues over the years
✅️ Super group to work with
Looking forward to the next 50 rotations hoping for a century, who knows ?
The kind of email that you receive from your former PhD student (Lei Dong) on Teacher's day.
#HappyPI
Lei already wrote two manuscripts out of his PhD project and a third one to be submitted next week.

I have just sent 30+ emails to authors (cc to editors) about wrong sugars in articles
This was my 2023 batch of

papers
I had 80+ papers flagged but did not waste time sending an email for all of them and selected the most problematic ones

OK, it is not my research project but the editorial on DCM injury.
Yet still so happy to read:
"We are pleased to inform you that your manuscript has been accepted for publication in ACS Central Science." in an email signed by

@ChemMouse
That is the reason of my post.
I think it should go viral because the solvent is used every day in the org chem labs all over the world.
We had no idea of consequence until this happened last summer.
MSDA talked about inhalation, ingestion, skin or eye contact, but NO injection.

to host Amina who will be my first M2 student here in Gif-sur-Yvette on a collaboration with a company for cosmetics !!
And yes, I do wear a lab coat once in a while...
I have hesitated a whole week about rejecting a paper.
Decided to go for reject and convinced myself 75%.
Wrote report on the website.
Checked other reviewer report = Reject based on exact same aspects.
Felt bad for the authors but also a bit less guilty.
Reject is not easy.

I also like very much citing the references from supporting information into the main text (to give credit to all references/authors properly) !!!
Charges for color figures will no longer apply to manuscripts submitted after March 1, 2024.
For your next submission, we invite you to check out the Viewpoint Article "Coloring Chemistry—How Mindful Color Choices Improve Chemical Communication" ().
Asking this question is like excluding 80% of researchers and their students/collaborators who submitted their work and got (desk) rejected.
What does this tell us about inclusion?
I have published 2 JACS out 100+ papers. Submitted 3 and then abandoned the idea after 3 rejections
Tell me about your first publication in JACS.

105 grant applications in 15 years.
Budget from 5k€ to 4M€.
20% success rate, not bad but mostly for small budgets (less than 50k€ local funding).
I guess this is in line with average success rates in Chemistry.
So, young investigators, keep submitting grants, dont panick.

When an administration or colleagues know a PI who is toxic....and do nothing, leaving affected students or even staff on their own.
We must all act, at the first problem identified, otherwise we are guilty too of that PI's toxocity.
Almost 1 year on Twitter.

I am learning so much from this social media.
If you think i am tweeting too much, then blame

@stuartcantrill
for teaching me.
Something I learnt today from Swiss funding (SNF).
If your grant is rejected, you would still get a portion of the grant based on your ranking/evaluation.
Success rate way above 25%.
Heaven on Earth!!??
Review just submitted with this in the comments to Editor:
"Very good study, scope of the reaction is a bit limited but in times of COVID-19, I would not dare to ask for more examples."
If a paper is citing 5 whole pages of references in the supporting information, is that fair to the authors of these papers that do not get credit/citations for their work ?
Can we avoid that as authors, editors, please ?
@J_A_C_S
can you maybe do something ?

This is supposed to be cellulose (1,4-glycosidic bond) but all I see is a 1,3-connection and a wrong reducing end sugar with the CH2OH at position 2 and an alcohol at position 5.

I had a great conference and met quite a few top scientists, most on Twitter now.
So, I hit the 1k follower partly because of the frenzy about this DCM accident.
I wish that would be for great science (still to come hopefully).
Thank you all for your support.
Student is doing fine and recovery is somewhat OK and still studying Org Chem in another lab.
Carreira's response as of Wikipedia:
"In an interview with Christopher Shea from The Boston Globe, when Erick was asked about the letter he said he did not remember it and it might have been a joke."
If this statement is correct, we sure dont have the same sense if humor.

En fait, ce ne sont pas tellement des "détectives" mais surtout des scientifiques qui font leur travail et identifient des problèmes évidents dans des travaux de très mauvaise qualité
