Outcome 6 in ARCP - specialty training in T&O done!!
Be sure when you step, step with care and great tact
And remember that life’s a great balancing act
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft
And never mix up your right side with your left!

Well done everyone and thanks for getting involved! If you think you are a collaborative author and haven’t had an email, please get in touch with me asap.
Good news, everyone!
The role of gender in operative autonomy in orthopaedic surgical trainees (GOAST) has been accepted for publication in The Bone & Joint Journal.
Thank you to all of our collaborative authors - we couldn't have done it without you!
Many thanks to

@deboraheastwood
for an insightful chat about the GOAST study. Great to get the message out there but I don’t think you should ever hear your own voice read back at you.. 😂
Attention MAVCOV collaborators, our paper has now been published in Injury. Congratulations to Derrick and the team for this massive piece of work!! Many lessons we can take forward for virtual fracture clinics in the future…
I wonder if increasing ambiguity over non-medical roles will be the catalyst for UK surgeons to go back to calling ourselves Dr again? What do you think,

It’s interesting that although many more female than male trainees take time out for parental leave, men are more likely to take time for family or compassionate leave. This may reflect similar responsibilities for both that are just recorded differently
4.From ST6-ST8, trainees are lead surgeon on 75% of all cases they are involved in
5.Male trainees are lead surgeon on 3% more cases than females, equating to an estimated difference of 54-61 cases over the five-year training programme

Thank you to everyone who’s had the courage to speak out about this.
If you’re in any sort of supervisory position over trainees, it is your responsibility to make sure this doesn’t happen

1.274 respondents with 285,000 surgical cases over 1300 trainee-years
2.With 270 collaborative authors, one of the biggest trainee research collaboratives ever
3.Average 2045 surgical cases between ST3-ST8 for those who had completed training
Massive thanks to all the faculty, Director Nick Athey and Johanna Smurthwaite for a well organised and enjoyable ATLS reverification course. Who knows… maybe I’ll be back sooner than I expected!!

First that it’s a great place to work! Most of the IMGs I’ve worked with have done a temporary post eg LAT year and spent that time getting experience of the UK health system and working on their CVs. There are great LAT posts in Scotland, especially at

The MSF allowed any of your colleagues (not just consultants) to give anon., unbiased feedback. You got an equal say. The MCR is paternalistic and 0a block to those who otherwise are ready to CCT depending on whether they meet their CS’s subjective idea of a ‘day one’ consultant
@Herring1967
welcome back to Edinburgh! No need to look alarmed at receiving a large smile from a very pregnant lady on the street today, she’s just a fan ;)
Delighted to have been involved in this study investigating acrometastases in cancer. Congrats to Rory Thompson for an excellent piece of work as a med student and thanks as always to Prof Jariwala for his guidance & advice!

I can’t agree more. I don’t understand how national bodies can justify calling training grade doctors ‘junior doctors’ and expect this not to impact on the respect they get from nursing staff and patients.

This is an excellent chance to create some open, positive discourse about orthopaedic training equality, we’re very excited! You can find all the information you’ll need on our website or follow the link to the questionnaire:
