Realistically, the goal at the start was top 4.
No other team would have the expectation to win it all with a brand new midfield in their first season together.
This was a season of rebuilding.

I also think the levels of everyone else have gone up.
The “average” in the premier league today and over the last few years is at a much higher level than they were back then.
You have to be almost superhuman to truly stand out today.
