it should be "at least as easy" to cancel a subscription as it was to sign up. the @FTC has called one of the news industry's favorite retention tactics — "click to subscribe, call to cancel" illegal — and warned companies it's ramping up enforcement.

That's....... the whole problem and exactly what the union has been fighting. Sports Illustrated didn't go downhill because of its staff writers, who worked through winnowing resources to do great work amongst the content farm chum. SI went downhill because of management choices.

I'd love to see an investigation in @CJR or @Poynter into the deceptive business practices newspapers use to hook subscribers at ridiculously low rates, automatically switch to arbitrarily high amounts w/ very little transparency or notice and make it a nightmare to cancel.

Canada announced a new tax credit to encourage digital news subscriptions back in 2019. After hearing one editor-in-chief describe the benefit as "negligible," I asked the Canada Revenue Agency for nationwide data.
