And Melody Rivers, a veteran who was diagnosed with colon cancer, needed emergency surgery and lost her job in a span of a month. She also was evicted.

Absolutely, because once it is “owed” it means that it’s seen as something that is owned. It means we have turned a person, a relationship, into an object.
Everybody knew somebody in the “condo of the abuelas” Sunrise strolls on the beach preceded Cuban coffee on balconies bathed in ocean breezes... On any elevator ride, it was a medley of “Shalom,” “Oi, tudo bem?“ “Rad tebya videt” or “Como estas?”

Six-year-old John Paul Rodriguez keeps telling his dad to call his missing grandmother’s cellphone. “Her cellphone might be smushed,” he tells him, "but try again."
Norma McCorvey, the famous plaintiff known by her pseudonym Jane Roe, was always a controversial figure – regardless of what side of the abortion debate she was on.
Nobody knows this better than Melissa Mills, her eldest daughter.
“Nobody makes frijoles negros like she does,” Rodriguez said. “She tried teaching everyone and my wife, too, but for some reason they don’t taste the same.”
There’s still a plastic margarine tub in Rodriguez's fridge filled with a batch of black beans Chavez cooked.
They never missed a Saturday. John Paul, would excitedly open the door to hug Chavez, who he calls "Yeyi," and Blesser, who he calls "Ama." The two would drive him to a local Cuban bakery for fresh guava pastelitos.
They would spend the day at the pool or playing at the beach.
