Husband: “I think I stepped on some glass. Can you do surgery on my foot?”
9yo daughter: “Ooh! I’ll scrub in!!”
..Runs out and comes back with unicorn “scrubs” (onesie) and dripping hands
..I’m so proud 😂❤️🧑🏼⚕️

life is when your daughter’s prom dress is coming apart at a tension point 10min before her date arrives, so you grab some 5-0 prolene from your room and throw in a few vertical mattress sutures.
I’m going to be a neurosurgeon!! A million thanks to all the mentors, friends, and family who have helped and supported me on this path. This mom of 9 is going to be a neurosurgeon!!! 🎉🎉
Still thinking about that residency interview where they asked me what I like to do to relax and I said sometimes I like to get in bed and watch Netflix with potato chips. 🤷🏼♀️

Even with all that process improvement, your house will not stay clean, especially during busy phases like exam weeks, etc.
This is MY actual room while studying for the mcat. My toddlers thought the laundry was confetti. This is real life with kids sometimes and is not failure.
Today I placed my first (non-cadaver) burr hole, got some good hands-on time during the case, and sutured the incision with great mentors giving me instruction and encouragement. So happy.

Finished my first month as nsgy intern on a high volume service. Saw >100 ED consults, helped patients, learned management principles, and took time to stay connected to family. Next stop ICU.

for subi and application! I logged my 600th case before finishing second year, and have so much fun hanging out with my awesome coresidents!
Finally, BE BRAVE.
Raising kids is scary and pursuing a medical career can be scary. Don’t be surprised when feelings of inadequacy, overwhelm, exhaustion, and doubt creep in. They will. Just push them out, put one foot in front of the other, and know that you CAN DO THIS! 👊🏻
Everyone’s getting excited to join our new family

Simplify your home life as much as possible. Put grocery delivery on repeat. Use Amazon prime for household stuff to save yourself trips to the store. At one point I got 50 pairs of the same low-cut black socks so we wouldn’t have to match pairs. Think outside the household box.
One more graduation post to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone at
@MayoClinicSOM
- Dr Meyer,
@ShahGeriatrics
@michelehalyard
, the amazing admin staff, and all the faculty for an excellent med school experience that allowed us to thrive through 4 great years!
You have to be able to tolerate imperfection in yourself, your partner, your kids, and your school. Focus only on working hard at the thing in front of you and expressing love and appreciation to the people supporting you. No, they do not really understand and that is okay.
Hey
#Match2022
candidates - here’s why you’re all rockstars… a🧵
1. We did our first clinical rotations during the craziness and uncertainty of the initial covid wave
2. Our Step 1 exams were on and off like a toddler with a light switch

Moms in Medicine, KEEP GOING. Even when everything is horrible. Don’t listen to the doubts in your head (or from others). One foot in front of the other. From this neurosurgery intern and mom of 9 - You can do this! 👊🏻❤️🙌🏻
Surround yourself with cheerleaders - and these do NOT need to be other moms! I was blessed beyond belief to find amazing friends who have pulled me up during those inevitable low points. Load your boat with good people!
I call this one ‘Happy Intern at Midnight’ - heading out after scrubbing two cases with awesome seniors who taught me new skills in the OR.

Amazing time at

resident/fellow graduation dinner last night! Got to meet some outstanding faculty and senior residents. My two co-interns are 💯 fantastic humans and I’m so grateful I get to spend the next 7 years with them!
PSA: if you order chia seeds to start overnight oats or some other improbable health goal and your kid spills them all over the bathroom counter, go ahead and check that sink drain within the first 48-72 hours 🪴

Today is the first day I’ve wished that I was done with med school and starting

process and hopefully joining this great field! 🧠
If you’re SURE you want to do this, and spouse/partner/kids/etc are on board, don’t take anyone else’s opinion to heart. This applies to specialty choice as well. Peoples’ opinions stem from their own life experiences which prob don’t apply to you.
As I finish my first subi I’m trying to process all the expected and unexpected things I learned, amazing people I met, and the countless ways I want to improve moving forward. Thank you

intern here, but I’ll kick us off with one of my favorite family pics! 😄 I’m grateful to be part of this field, which has and welcomes all types/sizes of families. Building a career I love and can share with my family is priceless!
First, I had my kids before med school so this won’t include pregnancy timing/advice.. but having kids during med school/training is done all the time, and there are many resources out there for tips, advice, support, etc… I just happened to split my journey into stages.
After two years of nsg residency, asked the kids: if we could go *anywhere* for spring break, where would you want to go?
Rachel 19: New Zealand
Andrew 17: Mexico
William 16: a trampoline park
Joseph 14: Chicago
Emma 13: Arizona
John 11: the grocery store
James 10: the arcade
Med students and even

interns - get this book and read it cover to cover! So helpful. Practical plan outlines for ED consults, key guidelines/classification systems, even “walking thoughts” to keep in mind as you’re on your way to the consult. Get it and read it!
Couldn’t resist picking up one of the first ever copies of this gem and now I’m having trouble putting it down!Cases are engaging with a sweet spot level of detail. Great work

Applying to away rotations has me feeling amazed and grateful that soon I’ll be able to spend a few months doing what I’ve been dreaming of throughout med school - focusing solely on
#neurosurgery
and learning to care for neurosurgical patients. Now back to greenberg.. 😁❤️🧠
Went in early this morning and scrubbed a GBM resection and there was nowhere else I’d rather be. Kinda sad sub-i season is ending soon, but also looking forward to residency and full-time focus on

Just heard my 8yo say “caffeine pwevents adenosine from binding to our weceptors so it can’t weduce our bwain activity” so yeah my kids are turning out super normal and med school hasn’t made them weird at all
Ordered medical school grad announcements today after spending the day cleaning out my boys’ room to get ready for the move (I found out where all the chips have been going) and it felt like a perfect microcosm of my very full life and I was happy and grateful and tired 😄❤️🙏🏻
Best wishes to everyone opening their envelopes tomorrow!

Studying with kids:
Probably don’t do this 😂 unless you have those calm, angelic kids who do things like sit quietly and color (0/9 for me). For deep study, leave and go somewhere you can focus. Save the lighter work for at home.
Asking a medical student to pay $500 bucks to register for a conference they’re presenting research at…seems awful. This doesn’t even include travel, stay, etc.
One of the most rewarding things about being a

So proud of my husband for publishing his memoir! He has had an extraordinary life to this point (from living in state custody as a child to becoming a rocket scientist) - it’s a great read and is available now if you want to check it out!

Day in the life of an MS3/mom:
- Took IM shelf
- berated myself in abject regret and vowed to study more next block - for real this time 😂
- found the last kids bike in Arizona
- got a cake, wrapped presents, put on a birthday party for this 10yo tween
- research maybe? 😄

I think my friend spoke for parents everywhere when he said to his kid: “I don’t know if you’re going back to school or not but you can’t stay here”
@Clementine_UTSW
If you can’t afford more help, change your home processes. Stop folding laundry - for little kids, lay shirts and pants/shorts flat in drawers and stack. Older kids can hang up their shirts. Buy only 1-2 kinds of solid color socks so they all match. Grocery delivery on repeat.
