The exact moment I decided not to do cardiology:
Note: “The patient has a complex AF history.”
Me: “damn straight, hella complex”
Attending: “no, it means complex Atrial fibrillation…”
Saw a medical student sporting a “Please do not confuse your Google search with my medical degree” mug. Umm...sir, I’m in medical school and I can guarantee that the vast majority of what I know comes from googling stuff.
UWorld questions escalate so fast. Patient presents with mild fever and runny nose. Has history of HIV, Hepatocellular carcinoma, TB, and has an episode of actually dying in the past 6 months. What is the likely pathogen?…okay first, chill.
Yesterday, I reviewed immunodeficiencies and glomerulonephropathies for the 108285027058304858 time. And yet today, what questions do I get wrong? Immunodeficiencies and glomerulonephropathies.
When I showed my residency app before sub-I season to 3 neurosurgeons I respected, I was called delusional and told to not even consider applying.
F**k EVERYONE who won’t believe in you, or if the odds are stacked against you. You believe in you, and will yourself to success.
So humbled to say that I’ll be heading home, to my alma mater, at the University of Minnesota for Neurosurgery Residency. Excited to train and serve the community that raised me, while pursuing a mission to change the world.
Open question for everyone in
#MedTwitter
: How do you mentally get over mistakes as a resident while continuing to build confidence in yourself in the future?
I’m so grateful for all physicians that teach medical students with interest and passion. Seeing this passion in mentors can often be why people select a certain field or not.
When I started my research year, I had one accepted paper. Today, after thousands of hours of grinding, teaching myself how to code in R, running stats, I am at 21 hard-earned accepted papers, with another 15 papers under peer review, 18 papers under prep.
#nothingisimpossible
I have published papers on ischemic spinal strokes but I continue to get questions wrong on spinal stroke syndromes on UWorld. I have failed myself. Bro just read your own paper.
Don’t understand medical students who get competitive with research and school. The competition has always been and forever will be “me vs. me.” Medicine succeeds when we all are at our best.
After my first residency interview today, I’ve decided to abandon “traditional” preparation for future interviews, do more introspection in place of rehearsal, and trust myself and my passion to come through about taking care of patients with 🧠 disorders naturally.
PSA: the medical school you graduate from has no bearing on how great of a physician you can become. That’s entirely dependent on how hard you work, your skill, and your EQ. You can hone and perfect these things no matter where you are.
Shout out to all the medical students who don’t have home residency programs in their specialty of interest but still grind hard daily to get better clinically, work hard for research projects, and network with faculty.
Just finished STEP 2. Not sure how I feel. Ran out of time on the first and the last block, and felt like there were quite a few questions where either I just screwed up or was stuck between two answers. We shall see what the lord has planned soon!
Went from 0 pending projects and 1 publication from undergrad at the beginning of my research year to 27 published manuscripts at the conclusion of my research year. Two big things that helped me: investing time in learning statistics fundamentals, and learning how to code.
So excited to say that I have completed this application cycle. The completion is my achievement, the result is up to divine grace. Best of luck to all folks participating in the Match this year!

Month 5 of neurosurgery residency, completed. The surgical ICU is a very tough place - seeing patients suffering from complex surgical and medical issues, and doing your best to help them heal. Helps to have great coresidents and seniors to teach you how to navigate that darkness
Every time I have the privilege of saying “incision” at the beginning of a case as I wield the 10-blade to make the first cut, I am struck with this sense of awe: holy shit, I’m a surgeon.
Trying to get connected to neurosurgery folks on Twitter for connections, collabs, mentorship and general wisdom. If you’re connected to neurology or neurosurgery in some way, whatever level of training, like this tweet so I can follow you!

I think future premeds should major in comp-sci and some business minor/major to best prepare them for the future of medicine. Also creates a pathway for a career outside of medicine if your interests change or you take a couple gap years.
Excited to share this open workshop to the broader NSGY and Neurology community hosted by our
@AANSNeuro
chapter. Open for residents, faculty, med students. Sign up on the QR Code/Link for more info!
Asking a medical student to pay $500 bucks to register for a conference they’re presenting research at…seems awful. This doesn’t even include travel, stay, etc.
I will die on this hill.
@AANSNeuro
should make their conference registration free for medical students, like
@CNS_Update
. Also, not having released any abstract decisions, medical students have to cough up $149 now or risk paying >$400 later to just register.
@amybarnhorst
“Complicate things for you and your colleague” sounds like a threat to me, one that he has no grounds to make. Definitely report to Springer and home academic institutions!
Very excited to share a total of 15 abstracts and oral presentations accepted for presentation at
@CNS_Update
. Excited to meet the neurosurgery community and share the awesome work by our team of students.

I can’t explain in words the feeling when you see a patient you treated when they were very sick in the ICU come back in clinic looking healthy and happy. “Satisfaction”, “gratitude”, “amazement” are words that don’t do this feeling justice.
Excited to share our team’s publication in Neurosurgery on global TBI outcomes and socioeconomic correlates. Grateful for our mentors at
@ILLINOISmed
and
@IcahnMountSinai
. Lots more to come!
Grateful for two accepted papers today, one letter to the editor on unsupervised machine learning to
@NeurosurgeryCNS
and one study on idiopathic spine strokes published in
@SNInt

In high school, Anytime my mom saw me stressed out for tests, she used to bring me a few watermelon slices and coffee. I’ve recently realized how much I took that for granted back then. To add to nostalgia, I cut up my own watermelon and made coffee. I miss you, mom.
I was grateful to present at the Illinois State Neurosurgical Society about my research on DBS for Depression this past weekend. Thanks to a wonderful event by the society.
Earlier this year, our
@AANSNeuro
chapter at
@ILLINOISmed
hosted a 4-hour “Introduction to Clinical Statistics” crash course for medical students, residents, faculty. We covered using R for meta-analysis and patient-data studies. RT/👍🏽 if you’d attend the next one if made public.
I was fortunate to win one of the top abstract awards for my presentation on unsupervised machine learning for spinal cord injury functional outcomes at

I’m having way more fun actually doing engineering and device design/development in neurosurgery than I have ever had doing chart review projects and reviews/meta-analyses.
As I start submitting abstracts to the
@AANSNeuro
’s

conference, I wanted to reaffirm the importance of making conference more accessible to med students by removing conference registration fees. Read our LOE published in

We need more engineers in medicine - the future of the digital and technological revolution in medicine and surgery depends on it. If you have an engineering background and are debating/considering medical school, let me assure you that you are needed.
Grateful that this project that I’ve been working on since my second year of medical school was finally published! We examined how node breaks and edge breaks in neural networks can simulate cognition in neurodegeneration. Excited to continue to push this forward in Neurosurgery!
Very grateful for our recently accepted manuscript on diagnosing radiation necrosis vs. tumor recurrence in the Journal of Neuro-Oncology. We show via a diagnostic network meta-analysis of >100 studies that MR Spectroscopy has the best efficacy.

As soon as I got my MD, my family started asking me sophisticated questions like, “is there anything I can take for a stomachache” and “how do I get my cough better.” Can’t help with that but I can answer basic questions like what the branches of the external carotid artery are!
When I started my research year, we had maybe a case report or two coming out of the Department of Neurosurgery a year. We assembled a team of bright students and forged the right connections. Now, we are on our way to submitting the 15th manuscript this year.

(1) Do not *try* to stand out. Instead, focus on learning the most you can, helping the team however you can, and contributing to the care of patients in the service. Do this with diligence, humility and gratitude - you will stand out in the way you intend.
Of potential interest to the neurosurgery and neuro-psych community…

So excited to announce that I was elected Student Body President of my medical school. Very excited to continue advocating for students and connect with other students in student gov at other medical schools.
It’s so refreshing seeing posts by mentors that celebrate the success of their mentees, especially as it pertains to helping students match into neurosurgery. Speaking as someone with fantastic mentors, there are countless hours behind mentorship too. Can’t wait to pay it forward

Reminder to self: people don’t become fit and lose weight overnight. It takes months to years of daily healthy/good decisions, and a lot of self-love and self-forgiveness.
Congrats to my younger brother who graduated from the
@UMNews
with a Bachelors in Computer Engineering! He’s off to
@UofIllinois
@uofigrainger
for his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering next - best wishes, Akshay!
Had a paper flatly rejected today that I felt great about. For each step towards the sky, there is also a acceleration back down to earth. Good to remind ourselves not to be discouraged by setbacks, but to embrace failure, make marginal improvements and keep going.

People assume with my engineering background that I use Schrodinger’s equation and multivariable calculus to solve day-to-day problems, when in fact, I just think of creative ways to attach duck tape to hold things together.
Excited to share our new paper on sports-related SCI functional recovery. Great work to our team and grateful for our mentors from
