@PureMichigannow @JoyceAnnBurns I just hope no one is trying to teach her to 'process faster'. π₯°

@PureMichigannow @JoyceAnnBurns I always find it takes me a bit of experience with each student to fall into the right rhythm for them of how much to be patient and provide the time that they need, versus when to provide a prompt and have them practice correctly. This is where processing time matters most.

@CoriSpear @Beanie0597 *Many* teacher preparation programs don't adequately prepare teachers to teach children to read.

@JoyceAnnBurns @PureMichigannow Not all dyslexic students have slow processing speed. Many do, but their phonological processing deficits are more worthy of attention as the necessary skills can be taught.

@Lawl_Assoc @Beanie0597 Doctors, lawyers, psychologists, accountants, etc. have to do multiple entry requirements (often including supervised practice) into the profession, outside of their degrees. These entry requirements don't have equivalents for teachers in most jurisdictions.

@CoriSpear @Beanie0597 What were you taught about the most important elements of teaching students to read?

@CoriSpear @Beanie0597 Which of the theories you were taught had the most empirical support? Were you taught any 'clasdic' theories of learning like Vygotsky and Piaget?

@CoriSpear @Beanie0597 What courses were included in your degree that focused on perception, attention, memory, learning/cognition? In my B.Ed. there was virtually nothing.

If you leave it up to teachers, but teachers aren't using science to make their decisions (and most don't have the training to weigh scientific research results in this field) doesn't that disadvantage children whose teachers chose methods that are based on disproven theories?
Cabinet secretaries in Wales, and now Northern Ireland have both spoken with @RhysWilliamsTV and committed to removing teaching methods that hinder children, especially those with dyslexia, ADHD, and EAL, from learning to read in their schools. @JennyGilruth: Leaving it to up local authorities to decide what methods to use. π€¦ββοΈ

@4TiffanyJustice Very little tweaking necessary for it to be a great model for Kindergarten reporting.

@4TiffanyJustice @tomboytomom @Theo_TJ_Jordan No! I too had difficulty with it (later than kindergarten! π) But that kind of coordination is *important*.

@C_Hendrick @UniOfHull @UniOfHullGlobal @UniOfHull @UniOfHullGlobal should realize that this advertises that their instructors won't know how people actually learn. If they are advising students to choose courses based on something unscientific, then they are probably giving instructors similar (wrong) information. πͺ

@MinorityView @JamesAFurey I agree re: fads. And the whole language belief that motivation & exposure is enough 4 kids 2 learn to read was the very worst fad of all. And it's left generations of teachers uneducated and ill-equipped 2 ensure ALL children learn 2 read. Some it worked 4 grew up 2B teachers.

@MinorityView @JamesAFurey That's good and worked out well for you. IMO, 's not a good idea to base policy on individual experiences. Some children learn to read with quite limited instruction. Our public education policy should provide the explicit instruction that allows ALL children to learn to read.

@PureMichigannow @tetheredtoed1 πͺ it's like showing the intent to only let the already advantaged children learn to read.

@MinorityView @JamesAFurey Later than English speaking countries because it can be done much faster due to its shallow orthography.

@MmeLockhartLDSB @dwofthepeople @KJWinEducation @VIUniversity And SO few in Canada, but shout-out to @MountRoyalU in Calgary, Alberta where they ARE preparing teacher candidates to actually teach all students to read. #MountRoyalUniversity #MRU

@adamboxer1 @harrisonwright_ @TomRees_77 Who provides a diagnosis of dyslexia in your system? Is it always a psychologist?
