#Budget2022 includes an initiative by @McConalogue @agriculture_ie to grant aid the planting of Multispecies swards on Irish farms. This is a research topic our researchers have worked on for almost a decade.

Fascinating research by @ucdagfood shows that a farmer could reduce nitrogen spreading by 4.6 tonnes, while also getting 100 tonnes extra of fodder for their animals by moving to multispecies swards, whereby herbs and legumes are grown along with grass.

Great to see the work with beef cattle at @ucdlyonsfarm covered on @rtenews yesterday. @PallasTb @HelenBSheridan @fionnualagodwin & Alan Kelly all present are part of the larger team in @ucdagfood and beyond conducting this work

New research shows there are huge environmental and economic benefits for farmers who plant fields with multispecies of plants rather than grass alone. The research from UCD School of Agriculture shows emissions are also reduced | Read more:

Great interest yesterday from farmers in MSS and lots of really good and probing questions. Farmers are very keen to take on new practices to support sustainability but need to be properly supported in doing so.

Since we started our work on the @ucdlyonsfarm long term grazing platform @ABPDemoFarm have been our partner rearing calves and supporter of the research program. These cattle are reaching slaughter around 20.5 months at 315 kg carcass weight

@nookost @PallasTb Not sure MSS is being held back. Previous work here shows modest increase in herbage yield as N inputs increase, less legumes at higher N. We see very modest levels of clover in spring, so feel N is important early season to drive yield. No N applied after April.

@nookost @PallasTb We're looking at dropping N next year, I'm not aware of any very low/no N studies but there could be some.

Also cattle on MSS slaughtered 5 to 6 weeks earlier, so lower concentrare input during the finishing phase too.

@nookost @PallasTb SR (2.5 LU/ha) and Carcass wt (315kg) held constant on all swards, so output equal. N input of 205 kg/ha on PRG and 90 kg/ha on MSS & PRG/WC. More herbage (2tn/ha) on MSS, so when modelled C 👣 down 15% and net €/h up 65% on MSS
