Traffic is moving in both directions on U. S. 501 Bypass in Conway today, Sauturday, Sept. 22, 2018, after crews have completed building the flood barrier wall. The Waccamaw River has risen 13.2 feet this morning. The barrier wall has been built to a level of 20 feet.

Today, we mourn the loss of 2 of our SCDOT family members. Horry Co. Highway Maintenance Workers, Cecil Andrew Morgan & David Joseph Sibbick, were killed in Horry Co. Thursday. They were patching a pothole on US 501 between Aynor & Conway when a driver struck and killed both men.

The Waccamaw River is currently at 14.3 feet. It is beginning to touch the Project Lifeline flood barrier wall in areas on the US 501 Bypass in Conway. The river rose 12 inches over the past 24 hours.

The purpose of the I-26 lane reversal is to add capacity and accommodate evacuees. Traffic volumes monitored today on I-26 between Charleston and Columbia were twice the normal volumes in the WB direction. No major issues today on I-26. Evacuee traffic flowed at normal speeds.

Good news in Horry County: SCDOT will reopen SC 22 in Horry County at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 27. SC 22 westbound will be temporarily reduced to one lane in an area between SC 905 and SC 90 due one area of high water. All other portions of SC 22 will be open completely at 2 p.m.

Here’s some drone footage of the I-26 corridor. Earlier today, Governor Henry McMaster proposed allocating funding from the American Rescue Plan Act to expedite the widening of the I-26 corridor from Columbia to the Charleston area.
